U.K. Muslim group ends boycott of Holocaust Memorial Day

Britain's biggest Muslim organization reverses decision which has done 'more harm than good.'

By Assaf Uni Tags: Holocaust Remembrance Day Holocaust education UK

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), the largest Muslim umbrella organization in the U.K., decided over the weekend to halt its boycott of the country's official Holocaust Memorial Day.

The council's working committee decided to put an end to the six-year boycott, which started with the inauguration of the memorial day in 2001.

The MCB has since been subject to harsh criticism by the British government and Jewish organizations, and was often accused of anti-Semitism over the boycott.

Last year the MCB indicated a policy change, but the working committee ended up voting against it. "The decision was taken because staying away was doing more harm than good and being misconstrued," an MCB spokesperson told The Times.

18 members of the working committee voted in favor of halting the boycott, while eight voted against. MCB representatives will attend the Holocaust Memorial Day ceremonies, which will be held in Liverpool on January 27 - the 63rd anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp.

Holocaust Educational Trust Director Karen Pollock welcomed the decision. "It is right that the Muslim Council of Britain have finally decided to participate in Holocaust Memorial Day. It is important to note that the day has always commemorated the Nazi genocide and genocides since the Holocaust. This was particularly clear in 2001, the first year of HMD which was themed Remembering Genocides: Lessons for the Future and paid particular attention to Bosnia. Similarly, in 2004, the theme of HMD was From the Holocaust to Rwanda," she said.

"In the past, various Muslim organizations and individuals have been involved in HMD and it is the right decision for the Muslim Council of Britain to join them."

Muslims should either admit they curse us in their mosques or renounce their confused beliefs. The muslim council of Great Britain is not elected, would usurp the place of British women and is self appointed and therefore not well thought of. This ploy is for their own self advancement and barely worthy of a mention. British women regard themselves as equally valuable in our society and regard muslim objectives as a negative and backward influence.

We are all stupid to keep fighting for the same mistakes our forefathers were fighting for. and where are they now? sooner or later we will join them, so please let's have some love and compassion to one another,or Am I just dreaming?

In the spirit of Groucho Marx, they should'nt let the Muslim Council of Britain attend especially since it is doing it under the auspicous of wanting to improve its 'image'. Nothing was 'misconstrued' about the boycott, the organization doesn't respect the genocide of others.

although you are not mentioning the truth, many moslems in Europe, in poland gave refuge to jews,in turkey too, and in Palestine. some people opposed it, but what was the end result? you stole palestine and threw the pals out, {christians and muslims}, would n't you oppose the muslim today if you know, that their aim is to throw you out of Israel?, your aim at that time was to establish Israel and Lord Belfor promise was dated back in 1917. the jews were massacred in Europe on the hands of Christians, you don't dare to mention that of course, the crusaders, and the Romans all were christians. the Muslims never committed a massacre against the jews. but what you can say to someone like you, who like to twist facts.but you know what?,continue your aggression against Muslims, they don't worry about that, because the God of Abraham and Moses won't let this injustice to go on forever, without holding you guys responsible. live in your fantacy, till you meet your creator one day.

Holocaust denial is cover-up for Pal Leader, Grand Mufti, who participated actively in it, and probably was the one who convinced Hitler to adapt the Final Solution, instead of continue allowing Jews to emigrate to then British Palestine. Hitler wanted the Arab World?s support, which he got. The Grand Mufti is still revered. Arafat considered himself the Mufti's heir, and Abbas ? Arafat?s heir...

In WWII, the people you spoke of were killed as a result of war. The holocaust was the mass extermination of people for no other reason than they were Jews. Or political prisoners, mentally retarded, or just not genetically "perfect". Subtle difference between that and a V-2 in the night, I know. In fact, 11 million died in the holocaust, but nowhere in history that I can find, have so many from a single "group" been put to death for no reason other than being who they were. In this case, Jewish. Read a book then tell me - before 1948, where were the other Arab countries screaming for a Pal state? But 8 hours after the 1948 resolution was signed, the first bus with women and children was bombed and the first lies..sorry, cries..of "stolen land" went up. Both by Arabs. Where's your condemnation of the bombers who blew up children? Infants, toddlers...guilty of nothing but being Jewish, and for the Pals, that was enough. Where's your outrage over that?? Hypocrite.

Just another day in Islam, religion of pieces. Let's see, what moral atrocity do we have today? Wait! I know........ a schoolteacher in Sudan is threatened with prison, lashes, and beheading, but gets a reprieve at the last moment. Crime: letting her class name the teddy bear Mohammed, the most popular name in the muslim world. ooooooooooooh. And let us not forget the fatwah of death still lingering on Salman Rushdie's head over a book that was never read by those who created the edict. I was in San Francisco at the onset of the Lebanon war, and had the weird experience of watching a bunch of 8 yea olds in full Hijab screaming: 2 4 6 8! Israel is a racist state! how charming that just your everyday muslims in the USA are teaching their children the elements of anti jewish philosophy.

War causes suffering. Look at the displacements after the Second World War - millions of Germans forcibly removed from hundreds of years of living in Silesia. Muslims driven from Hindu areas, and vice-versa, during partition of the Indian subcontinent. You don't hear the descendants of those people talking about being refugees 60 years and more later. They did what the Arab Jews who were forcibly removed from their homes did - made the best of a bad situation in another land. But the Palestinians were never given the chance - unwelcome in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, or Egypt. Pawns used by these Arab governments, consigned to the dung-heap politically econonomically and culturally. Encouraged radicalism and fanaticism - Arafat was 'appointed' to head the PLO because the Arabs wanted a Fifth Column to help destroy Israel. Arabs already HAD the West Bank and Gaza. They weren't interested in rehabilitating the poor Palestinians. Only the destruction of Israel would do. So it seems.

The poverty of your thinking is astounding…. Even in the modern period of human history, there have been countless wars, invasions, massacres and subjugation of peoples. One of those was WWII with perhaps as many as 50 million deaths. And yet you go on to say, that the Naqba is one of the saddest events to have occurred in modern history. Do you know how many refugees there were after WWII? Millions…Do you know how many are still refugees? None. Why? Because they were absorbed into their host countries and assimilated into their societies. Why was there a refugee crisis in 1948? Because the Arab states (and the Palestinians) could not countenance a Jewish state on even the tiniest sliver of the region. So they attacked en masse the fledgling Jewish state – and helped create the 600-800,000 refugees (which you label one of the saddest events in modern history). Why are they still refugees? Because their Arab “brethren” refused them human rights, citizenship, employment, dignified housin

Although one sympathizes with the sufferings of all victims on all wars anywhere, do not compare the number of victims with a policy at state level of extermination of an entire population (or others for the matter). DYOR and check the support for the Nazis' policies in the Middle Eat, pre and during WWII. Regarding the Naqba, there was also another tragedy, that is the systematic expulsion of Jewish populations from many countries in the ME. Note that here they succeeded, so you can imagine if they had succeeded on their drive to expel the Jews to the sea. Arab governments, the propaganda at the time of the wars is abundant and for all to see, used an entire group of people to advance (and fail) their political agenda.

Because it only celebrated the Jewish holocaust. The Muslim Council of Britain thought that it should commemorate other Holocausts such as Darfur, Rwanda, Cambodia, Armenia, Russia, Tibet, Palestine amongst others. Holocaust Memorial day has been adapted for that purpose. In January we will be teaching about the Holocaust in Dharfur. As well as teaching the Shoah of the late 1930's and early 1940's. Personally I think it should be a day when we teach our kids that been different is good, and if we pick on people who are different then this can occur. Thus combining this particular day with anti bullying initiatives as well.

If we are going to remember the holocaust, and ignore the other 50,000,000 who died in WWII (Russians, Chinese, Japanese, American... other goyim), then we should have a memorial for the Naqba - the day when Palestine ended and Israel began. Not as many were massacred, but the real Holocaust lasted 5-6 years, the Naqba has lasted nearly 60 and caused 60 years of suffering for an entire people, generated Islamo-terrorism, and is one of the saddest events to have occured in modern history - mostly because its tolerated and supported - rather than being condemned.

I am puzzled. not sure what boycotting Holocaust Memorial Day has to do with Israel or taking a political stance against Israel. Perhaps the UK Muslim groups misunderstood basic things, like what the Holocaust is about, what persecution is about, why they love to hate so much, etc
