Perhaps what sets Israel morally above its neighbors, is that the incident will be investigated and if a soldier acted negligently, then he or she must be punished. On the contrary, their restraint is admirable, mainly taking into consideration that they are at war with the terrorists. The death of a child is a tragedy for which there are no words. The IDF must not do an internal investigation. Investigators outside of the army should look into this and all such killings. I once saw a traffic incident where a guy got into an argument an with another at a junction but that guy bit off more than he could chew so he rushed back to his car and took out the child and held the bawling infant in his arms to prevent himself from being attacked. Look guys, It is horrible that children get killed on both sides, but this idea that what the IDF does is somehow less reprehensible than say the actions of Hamas is absurd. First of all, as documented by Israeli and international human rights groups, the IDF constantly and intentionally kills people, including children unnecessarily (like during demonstrations). Second of all, those times when such killing is unintentional it is often easily preventable and SO many "accidents" cannot really be accidents. Third of all, I doubt that there are many tears being shed in Israel over necessary but preventable deaths of Palestinian children. Military victory is celebrated in Israel just as it is in Palestine. And finally, the Palestinians celebration over their own victories does not prevent them from deploring the only means that are available to them. Allow them to have an army and then you can have a legitimate warfare but do not berate them for using the only available means to achieve self-determination.

Killing of a child is a tragedy, plain and simple in anyone's religion, in anyone's politics. It is no justification to say she should have been protected by her parents. Bullets don't announce their appearance a month in advance in the newspaper. It is a tragedy. There is no moral equivalence with Israeli children killed. If the young girl was Israeli we would already have seen her picture all over the world. The PM would already be talking about retaliation and Bush speaking out against terrorism.
