Ten other people were treated for smoke inhalation-related injuries, with 5 of those evacuated to a nearby hospital.

An initial investigation found that the fire was caused by a lit cigarette thrown into the trash can in the stairwell.

Earlier, Channel 10 quoted the police officer in change of Tel Aviv's southern neighborhood as saying that a preliminary investigation had shown the cause of the fire to be a short circuit.
