Turkish girl 'buried alive for talking to boys'
Teenager's father and grandfather arrested over suspected 'honor killing' after police unearth shackled body.
By Haaretz Service and agencies Tags: Turkey Israel newsA 16-year-old Turkish girl was buried alive by relatives as a punishment for talking to boys, the Hurriyet newspaper reported on Thursday.
Police discovered the body of the girl, identified only as M.M., in a sitting position with her hands tied, in a two-meter-deep hole dug under a chicken pen outside her house in Kahta in the southeastern province of Adiyaman, the Turkish daily reported on its website.
The body was found in December, around 40 days after M.M. went missing. Police have arrested and charged the girl's father and grandfather over the murder. The father reportedly said in his testimony that the family was unhappy his daughter had male friends. Her mother was also arrested but later released.
A postmortem examination revealed a significant amount of soil in her lungs and stomach, indicating that she was buried alive and conscious, forensic experts told the Anatolia news agency.
"The autopsy result is blood-curdling. According to our findings, the girl, who had no bruises on her body and no sign of narcotics or poison in her blood, was alive and fully conscious when she was buried," said one expert, who asked not to be named.
The girl was reported as missing and no clues about her disappearance emerged until over a month days later, when the police responded to an anonymous tip, which suggested she had been sentenced to death by a council of family elders.
The family has nine children, including the girl, and reportedly told neighbors that she was missing. The girl had made a complaint to police about her grandfather two months before she went missing, saying that he beat her because she talked to boys.

the 'family' involved should get appropriate punishment as a warning to others not to do the same! sick and sad! there are no excuses for taking a human life in such circumstances! the murderous act has brought shame on the 'family'.
does that make Islam a tolerant religion? If Muslims kill people in the name of Allah or Islam,do you blame them for bad interpretation of religion or religion itself for allowing the murders and doing nothing to stop it? If you associate inquisition with Christianity, I will surely link Islam to the murders committed in its name without going 500 years back in history as you have to do to make your point because we don't see burning witches anymore, now we see beheadings and killings girls for talking to boys in the name of another religion.
The father should die just the way she did. For not haveing no soul or love for life it`s self.
My frum cousin would not go to his brother's wedding because he was marrying a nonJew. Is Judaism intolerent or is it my cousin who is intolerent? (I can tell you that he's a pretty rigid and angry individual who, in growing up, was socially maladroit and used religion to insulate himself from his inability to relate.) Brotherhood Synagogue in Manhatten has people of all races as members, does that make Judaism tolerent? The Spanish Inquistion thought burning people at the stake was just fine. Does that make Christianity intolerent? William Wilberforce was a 19th century Christian crusader against slavery. Does that make Christainity liberal? It should come as no surprise that religions are multifaceted, and people can take what they want and read into it what they will and come to amazingly divergent conclusions. It is a terrible oversimplification to say that a group inspired by a religion acts badly and therefor the religion is bad.
Mr. Ben Azzai: Judaism is not an "Abrahamic" faith. Jewish laws are from the time of Moses. God gave us the Torah through Moses.
When someone speak about islam as tolerant religion.I would sudgest to read the koran and see where islamic terrorism is coming from.
Anna, hopefully someday you will come to understand the difference between culture and religion. Honor killing is practiced in many parts of the world, and have little to do with the religion of the killers. In the west these used to be called "crimes of passion". BTW, the article never mentions that this family is particularly religious.
you only have to look at yourselves. the Haredim themselves are not the most democratic religous group in Jewishness. there are also cruel and gruesome stories about the guard of customs, all very frumm menn that go round spilling acid on girls faces for not behaving as they decide fit or beating up women that sit in the wrong place on mehadrim buses! all extremisms are bad in all of the 3 Abrahamic religions, this including Christians, Moslems and Jews...
Not a blasphemous statement...just one of utter bewilderment.
Isn't Turkey the most modern and secular Islamic state? We're seeing honour killings in Europe as well, as is America. The three Abrahamic faiths accept grave prohibitions on adultery, incest and sodomy -- but talking to boys ??? One hopes her family elders rot in prison.
