Top minister opposes Golan Heights referendum bill
Dan Meridor says a law mandating a referendum on a Golan withdrawal would tie Israel's hands in peace talks.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Golan Heights Syria Israel newsIntelligence and Atomic Energy Minister Dan Meridor blasted the government on Tuesday for pursuing legislation that could complicate future efforts to strike a peace deal with Syria in exchange for a withdrawal from the Golan Heights, Army Radio reported.
The bill would mandate a referendum or the approval of at least 80 members of Knesset in the event the government wishes to withdraw from any piece of territory that is currently under Israeli sovereignty.
"This proposal presents a cumbersome, damaging and unnecessary obstacle for the state of Israel which will be perceived as piling on more difficulties before a possible peace agreement or any other agreement," Meridor wrote in a legal appeal which he submitted to the Knesset.
Meridor is considered one of the more moderate Likud members and is a member of the "septet" forum of ministers responsible for key decisions relating to security and diplomacy.
Aside from the repercussions on peace talks, Meridor also said the bill harms Israel's system of legislation. "The law would damage the authority of the Knesset and it would grant the authority to decide to the entire electorate," the minister wrote.
"This change does not befit the constitutional regime in Israel. If there is a desire to change the system of government in a way that minimizes the Knesset's authority and transfers it to the voters via a referendum, this cannot be done with regards to one issue, but rather on a wide range of issues."

The Golan was paid for in the blood of our soldiers. The Golan was paid for by the agony of our soldiers roasting alive in tanks on fire. We didn't ask for the war. If war doesn't change borders this whole area would still be a part of the Ottoman Empire. Syria's war of annihilation against us was not a children's game. There are no do overs. Had they won we would not be here! We need the Golan more than we need their "peace",
Who is this crooked corrupt little politician who has nothing to say??he talks against democracy, was elected into a seat through the back door--must have been his farther's money because he is to useless to earn it himself.Did this nincumpoop ever do military service in Israel--or was he just a jobnick trying to hide from responsibility. He wants to give the corrupt crooked lying untruthful decietful politician the vote on the Golan PREPOSTURUS.
If one only looks at the law, UN resolutions, UN Charter, and cases lost at the Hague, the answer is clear--Give Back the Golan. The decision will not be made any other way. Upcoming treaties will honor the '67 borders--that's where the international community direction is heading. Get with the program.
A referendum is the truest form of democracy and considering the way Israels electoral system works then a referendum is the only way forward if we are going to decide on the future on something as important as the Golan which the majority of the public is against giving away it shold not be down to 61 out of 120 crooked politicans. Non of Israels politicians are directly elected, voters choose parties not individuals and the government itself is never made up of a single party its always a coalition put together by buying off other parties either through money for Shas or civil marrigaes for Liberman. Let the people decide if they say yes we give it away & if they say no we keep it, politicians are supposed to represent the people not the other way around. As Meridor seems to dislike democracy & the right of the Israeli public to decide directly then prehaps he belongs in Syria where they don't bother with stupid ideas like democracy
You can't give away what isn't yours. Sorry.
"The bill would mandate a referendum or the approval of at least 80 members of Knesset in the event the government wishes to withdraw from any piece of territory that is currently under Israeli sovereignty." And if a deal is struck then the PM of the day simply needs to ask the High Court of Justice to rule on this question: Q: Did the Golan Heights Law assert Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. The answer from the judges: A: No, it did not. It asserted that Israeli Law will henceforth apply in the Golan Heights, but it did not assert that Israel had sovereignty over that territory. There. Problem solved, Meridor.
never risked his life. never started any successful enterprise. just a pretty-boy prince - a NOTHING with proteksiya.
Big Issues are not suitable for Referendums for many reasons, some I will mention. a) The timing? Before Negotiations or After. What happens if the situation changes? Have a Referendum again? b) Referendums are OK on a clear cut Subjects of Yes or No. c) contrary to common thought a Referendum would not create a consensus , it would Polarize the Public, where in reality the Majority are in the Center. d) It would weaken the allready weak Political Institutions in Israel. e) Learn from Other Countries. Thanks Meridor.
No way can Israel give up the Golan to an Assad. It is the people of Israel who decide their security; not some politician.
I am not against peace with Syria, but I would not trust some Israeli politician that would be more interested in creating a legacy than making a sound agreement that has the support of the majority of the population. Israelis were overjoyed when the Egyptian and Jordanian peace deals were signed. If a sound land for peace deal is drafted, Israelis will vote for it.
Proof Golan is historically Israels. Brilliant article http://xrl.us/bmfrf My comments. Syria controlled the Golan for only 21 years, half the period it has been under Israeli rule. Almost half of its territory has been purchased by Rothschild and later robbed by the Syrian government in 1946. Jews settled in the Golan as early as 1886 but they were expelled, massacred in 46. The Golan is where the tribes of Dan and Menashe settled, and Israeli kings ranging from Saul to Herod ruled there. The Golan saw consecutive Jewish settlement for 800 years; 300 Jewish communities from the time of the Mishna and Talmud were discovered there, along with the remnants of 27 synagogues. Later, 1,000 years of desolation followed, until the Jews returned. The Golan belongs to us because it is the estate of our forefathers and not only by the power of occupation in a defensive war against an aggressor, like America in Texas and Poland and former German territories.
Not even a hundred MPs can give away Israel's Golan to enemy Syria. A majority of 3/4 of all Israelis would be closer to an appropriate referendum but in truth no one has the right to give any land of Israel to Israel's enemies. Golan will remain Israel forever.
