Pope Benedict XVI sparks widespread Muslim anger by quoting a 14th Century Byzantine emperor as saying that Mohammed had brought "things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."
The pontiff, who had initially disavowed the statement, later issued a rare apology.
