'The Matrix' producer in talks to make Prophet Mohammad film

Qatar media firm: Filming of $150m movie is set to start in 2011, with Barrie Osborne as its producer.

A film about the Prophet Mohammad backed by the producer of "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Matrix" is under discussion, a Qatar media firm said on Sunday, aiming to create an English-language blockbuster for the world's 1.5 billion Muslims.

Filming of the $150 million movie is set to start in 2011, with Barrie Osborne as its producer, Alnoor Holdings said.

Alnoor said the film - in which the Prophet would not be depicted, in accordance with Islamic strictures - was in development and talks were being held with studios, talent agencies and distributors in the United States and Britain.

The company launched a $200-million international film fund on Oct. 31 to invest in film projects amid tight financing in the wake of the financial crisis and plans to focus on Hollywood.

Alnoor said it aimed to attract the "best international talent" to star in the motion picture.

The company was set up this year to take advantage of economic opportunities in the entertainment industry, focusing on international film production, Arabic production and animation.

Well, think about it... How amazing "Scientifically" that the final messeger of the "All Mighty", said no to photographs, when a digital era eas not yet with them?? Look now for example, film photography is not like digital photography... You cant say yes to one and not the other.. Plus, look how we can distort images with computers = not honest = not true.. A photo could nowadays be shown to us of somthing happening, and then as humans, we may naturally react.. when truth is, it may not have been a truthful photo.. do you get what i mean though?? :) Scientifically, the Quran is the "ONLY" religious book that has not shown one fault.

I forgot to clarify earlier that Anthony Quinn starred in the English version of The Message. There were actually two different versions of the movie made, one with Arabic actors, the other with English actors. So it's not just one is a dub of the other, but they're actually complete films in their own right. Anthony Quinn did star as Hamza, the uncle of Muhammad (I'm guessing you're more familiar with the Arabic version, but do correct me). But yes, there was also Omar El Mokhtart, you are right!

Any film that gives a wide audience a positive image of Islam is going to be several nails in Israel's coffin. It'll be as bad as 'Cast Lead,' in its way. Incidentally, yeah -- I did see 'The Message.' That's creditable, but it's an Egyptian film, and Egyptian films aren't all that good. They're not all that bad, either -- but they're not all that good. This thing looks like it might have some horsepower -- and if the team from LOTR is making it, it'll get exposure.

If they are going to do a film, let it represent the totality of what this man did, good and bad and let the world judge whether he is the perfect model which should be emulated or not. He married a 6 year old while he was 53, took his adopted son's wife, slaughtered the 900 male jews of medina the banu qureiza, stealing their property and enslaving the women and children. Let the whole truth be told and just not the sanitized politically correct version which the world as coming to terms with since hadith, sunna and quran is becoming available which educates the populace.

Anthony Quinn played the role of Muhammad's uncle, Hamza. Interestingly, not just Muhammad, but his companion (I believe Abu Bakr) is also not depicted out of respect.

If muslims don't want to depict their prophet in picture and films cool. They have no right to make me not depict this historical warlord. In fact they cannot stop me even with weak homocidal bombing idiots at their behest. Freedom means more to me than islam does to muslims. They need to step back and look at the chasm before them.

    The new Mohammed film version
    • Edward
    • 02.11.09
    • 00:56

Besides Mohammed, both Moses and Jesus were considered as Prophets. What boggles my mind regarding this new film version being discussed is that it again conceals the element of Mohammed?s life and the behavioural ideology of the Muslim religion, let alone who Mohammed really was. Since he died after the Quran was written, it stands to reason that God, Allah or whatever else one refers to the all Mighty as being, God never told Mohammad or Moses or even Jesus and surely not their followers, that from hence forth, Prophets should ever again be depicted in any image format whatsoever. So basically from the time of Mohammed?s death, the person who come up with the fact that Mohammad should never be depicted, was no more than a regular person like you and I and not the Supreme Being. We already have had movies where actors portrayed with pride both Moses and Jesus. Thus I fail to understand why Mohammed cannot be shown as well. He was just as human as Moses and Jesus was and in my view, making him non-apparent and invisible, psychologically sends the wrong signal. I cannot fathom what the big taboo is in showing God giving Mohammed the verses of the Quran. At least seeing him in a movie role and equally learning about the discrepancies regarding what created the great divide between Sunnis and Shiites having them come to blows with each other, would certainly provide the Western world with an answer the Muslim faith, let alone understanding the reason why so many Muslim clerics provide so many different interpretation of the Quran. If the movie does not show Mohammed you will have spent US$150 Million for nothing.

Do we get to see pedophilia and violence towards non-believers also? Maybe throw a little porno in, that will bring the closet pervs in the muslim world out. It will be in context of "education", so it will be ok. I also understand that if you buy two tickets, you get a free wife beating. Three tickets gets your daughter stoned!

History has shown that if you write or make anything that depicts islam or Mohammed in a bad light usually end up with death threats issued against them. Salman Rushdi wrote a book the muslims didn't like and a fatwah was issued against him by the Iranian ayatollahs and now he lives in hiding. The people in the Denmark newspaper who wrote the cartoons about Mohammed they had death threats made against them. Make a movie about Mohammed if the muslims don't like it then somebody will see to it that all the people involved in its making will be marked for death by either the governments of muslim states or terrorists. I will though be going to see the movie be interesting to see what the producer of Matrix does to Mohammed.

Could it be that Moslems are ashamed of their prophet that the movie about prophet Mohammad won`t depict the prophet? It is not as if the prophet of Islam was sexualy aroused by the 6 year old `Aisha` It is not as if the prophet of Islam killed `Safiyya bint Huyayy` father and took her as his wife. Or am I wrong?

"The Message" was an excellent, well-done film on the beginning of Islam and the story of Muhammad. In accordance with Islamic tradition, no depiction of the prophet was shown, and it was still a captivating tale. Not to mention Anthony Quinn does a fine performance in the English version! I can't find anything to fault with a religion appreciating its God and its prophets so much that even images of them are forbidden. It shows a certain degree of reverence, respect, and duty that I think goes unappreciated.
