Dear Sir: You urgently need to verify the numbers you give for Jewish people in the diaspora and the ones living in Israel. The trend in Modern Hebrew is to anglicize words, i.e. use them as they are used in English without any attention made to how different concepts appear in different language. By age 13, I knew every prayer on Friday and Saturday mornings literally by heart, but I never understood a single word I recited. I suppose didn't pay much attention in Hebrew school, but frankly, the comprehension of the Hebrew language was never emphasized beyond being able to read and recite it. I sang my Haftorah perfectly at my bar mitzvah but didn't understand what I was singing. Hebrew should be reserved for prayer and the national language of Israel should be English. Re-connecting the Jewish populations of USA and Israel is essential to preserve the survival of the Jewish state with so many enemies wishing to destroy Israel.

Sorry, but the truth is that many (not all!) Israelis speak "Pidgin English" which may be intelligible but not much more.

Mr Peres, I think it is more important to discuss the question I am going to ask here. Carmi Gillon was the head of the SHABAK at the time of Rabin's assassination (you became Prime Minister as a result of the tragedy). His job was to keep Rabin alive and he failed miserably. When I learned hebrew at my European Jewish school there was a poster that stated 'Hebrew, the language of our connection' I always remembered this statement and thinks it's special if I speak to jews throughout the world and we are able to communicate in hebrew. Language is just a communication tool. It helps people communicate and conserve information about their history, civilization and religions. It becomes thus part of their identity. The message of God should not be reduced to one alphabet, syntax or language. Hebrew is the language of humans, it is a man made language, and is only less modern than English in that it dates further back. The main difference is that English allows Israeli Jews to communicate with more people than Hebrew. For those who see the future of Israel limited to communication among Jews in Israel, then English has no advantage over Hebrew. Hebrew is useless, like English would be, if you use it to communicate with others without trying to understand them. True, English is being used in hi-tech as dictated by foreign companies, but many Hebrew terms are nothing but Hebrewized English words. Hebrew is more modern than English. Hebrew is G-d's langauge. When Moshiach comes English will be but a distant memory. The way for Jews to be modern is not trying to change our Torah and our ways. Our greatest strength is the Torah. When the Israeli public realizes, that being Jewish, is of utmost importance instead of speaking English to be modern and go to bars to drink. When Israelis understand, prayer and torah study is our only roadmap to security all will be alright. A note about Yiddish: One of the biggest cultural loss of the Jewish people was the loss of Yiddish. In the shtetl when one was asked how are you today? Instead of saying Baruch hashem or tov todah. They would say something, like, I almost have enough for Shabbat, I already have enough for Shabbat. A book was a book, but a book used for holy means was a sayfer. Yiddish for the seculars had a great massive literature. Judéo-Arabe or ladino could not compete with that. I am not putting down Sephardim. They are a magnificent jewel in the world of Jewry. However, not too many movies were made in ladino or Judéo-Arabe. That is my only point. I love to learn and enjoy customs from Ethiopia to Yemen. Ashkenazi or Sephardic. Every corner and every culture of Jewish life is what our children should be learning along with torah, instead of watching MTV or soap operas.
