Terror victims' group asks court to delay prisoner release
Group says needs more time to review list; after five-day lull, 19 arrested in overnight West Bank raids.
By Avi IssacharoffA group representing victims of Palestinian attacks asked the Supreme Court on Wednesday to delay the planned release of 256 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
The Almagor Terror Victims' Association said more time is needed to review the files of the prisoners.
From an initial inspection of the list, there are already some names of terrorists whose release is unreasonable, the group's leader, Meir Eindor, wrote in a letter.
Almagor says 179 Israelis have been killed since 2000 by Palestinians freed in previous deals.
Cabinet ministers on Tuesday approved the list of Palestinian prisoners who are slated for release Friday as part of a series of goodwill gestures for Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas. Most of the 256 are members of Abbas' Fatah movement.
Emi Palmor, director of pardons in the Justice Ministry, said Wednesday's legal challenge was unlikely to delay the release. She said the courts have always deferred to the government on such matters in the past, and that none of the prisoners have been involved in deadly attacks on Israelis.
IDF troops resume West Bank arrest raids after five-day lullAfter a five-day lull in arrest raids in the West Bank, also planned as a gesture to Abbas, the Israel Defense Forces on Wednesday morning resumed arresting wanted militants.
Nineteen Palestinians were arrested in Bethlehem, Hebron, Ramallah and Nablus.
The arrests were focused on wanted men not among the 178 to whom Israel has offered amnesty in exchange for a vow to cease terrorist activities.
The IDF also curtailed offensive operations in West Bank cities in order to evaluate the capabilities and conduct of Abbas' Fatah security forces vis-a-vis militant groups. The PA's emergency government has vowed to check the activities of terror groups and curtail lawlessness.
Chief amongst the other gestures was Israel's decision on Tuesday to approve the prisoner release.
According to Palestinian sources, a total of 93 Al-Aqsa militants - 80 of them appearing on Israel's list of 178 - have signed the agreement and handed in their weapons, including Zakariya Zubeida, the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades commander in Jenin.
The IDF Central Command responsible for the West Bank had, however, only been given oral instructions to cut back its raids on wanted men other than those listed in the amnesty agreement.
"For now, we have removed our foot from the gas pedal," military sources told Haaretz Sunday, referring to the level of intensity with which wanted militants in the West Bank are being hunted down.

israel WILL not learn from it's mistakes nor history either, the proof is in the pudding my man.
Wow Tex..I'm pretty sure that Arabs have been on that land for a considerable period of time as well. Also Tex, the simple fact that the IDF wears uniforms doesn't give them a free pass to commit the atrocities that they have committed over the years. You're right they IDF does not blow up buses, they destroy houses and places where innocent people live. I don't think that even you can say that this is not terrorism. If this brutal occupation didn't exist and a Palestinian state did exist, they would probobally wear uniforms as well. They would probobally have tanks and helicopters and fighter jets too. Instead they throw stones. The so called terrorism that you see today exists only because these people were driven to this method as it is the only means left at their disposal. Also I think you should check the numbers as there are far more dead Palestinian civilians than Israeli's. So I ask you the same question that you ask me. Are you objective or are you just objectionable?
Calling the IDF "terrorists" isn't very objective. The IDF wear uniforms telling people that they are, indeed, IDF, and not civilians. Terrorists dress as civilians and tell people are the army of G-d, or Allah, or the Islamic Revolution. The IDF does not blow up buses. They arrest those who attempt to blow up buses. (Because who blow up buses are themselves blown up.) Finally, the IDF run a defensive battle against the Arabs who attack Israel. The Terrorists, well, they are in defense of a history that only they believe exists. And you, apparently, John. Mr. Objectivity who gives more credence to those in denial of Israel's 59 year modern day presence than the State of Israel which has had Jews on its land for the past 3000 years. Are you sure you're objective, or are you just objectionable?
has the world gone mad? why don't they release all the rapists, murderers, etc.?it's a trick I tell you.arabs/palestinians are tricky.if you release their all terrorists....fatah and hamas groups will unite to drag all the jews to mediterranean sea and wipe israel off the map.....but it will never happen though.no one can destroy israel and her people unless the God of Israel allows it.
I apologize to Maureen Ann. I meant to contrast Maureen's clear headedness to Andrew Watson and other Australians who embarass her.
There are now not one set of palestinian prisoners in Israel but three. Palestinian terrorists are in Israeli jails. Hamas members are in fatah jails and Fatah members are in Gaza jails. Those in Israeli fails are the lucky one. The fatah and hamas prisoners are tortured and beaten. So palestinian 'democracy' has brought about a whole new set of prisoners held by rival parties or clans. Compare to Lebanon where allegedly palestinian refugees in camps have become refugees again due to Fatah al-Islam's little war with the Lebanese army. Only palestinians can create refugees out of refugees and prisoners out of neighbors. This is a morally bankrupt society that is unworthy of not only a state but anything remotely similar. Ask the Hashemite who rule over the de facto palestinian nation, Jordan. They are a plague unto the whole world.
As I thought Israel will have already arrested more than they release by the time of the release date. How does any of this help strengthen Abbas and who is going to arrest the IDF terrorists?
The IDF certainly is arresting terrorists. The thing is the IDF are terrorist themselves. You need to be more objective and see the other side of things. The IDF has committed many, many attrocities and no one arrests them for their wrongdoings. And that my friend is elementary.
IDF isn't running beserk. Just apprehending additional terrorists. It's elementary.
Thank you for bringing some rationality back to these Talkback boards. Not everything Israel does is because they are power hungry meglomaniac barbarians. We don't like being killed. Unfortunately we are not perfect. We make mistakes. We make far less than 99% of the world yet me absorb a disproportionate amount of criticism and blame. I wonder why. I wonder if these "nice" people from Australia wonder why there are more journalists in the west bank and gaza than in ALL of Africa (look it up it's true). Maybe they should spend more time wondering where all their Aborigines have gone.
They should put revolving doors on the prison. That way the new prisoners can be going in as the old ones come out. Meanwhile, the 'gesture' is just that. And will no doubt be seen as such. Which raises the question, "why bother"? The occupation continues, Abbas dwindles, and Fatah has a few thugs back. Olmert clearly intends to do nothing of substance. So why bother letting one batch of thugs out?
It makes me happy to see Israel arresting these terrorists. These arrests will actually help end the occupation. With less of these murders on the streets there will less terror attacks and that will lead to better, more productive talks. I know people might get the wrong idea and think that this picture is another example of 'Israeli agression' but the intellectuals out there who want real lasting peace and want it yesterday will look at this picture and understand that in it Israel is putting it's boys at risk in ' working ' for peace. I commend the bold and proper actions that the state of Israel is taking in trying to secure a peaceful two state solution; I only wish they weren't all alone in this attempt.
Unfortunately it is more of the same and I agree of changing the Israeli policy, don't arrest them, SHOOT them or send them to Australia.
"The Israel Defense Forces on Wednesday morning resumed arrests of wanted militants in the West Bank after a five day break."
have handed in their weapons - did the IDF consider THIS while since this morning making new arrest raids, result 19 arrested "in Bethlehem, Hebron, Ramallah, NABLUS"???? If not, and/or there are casualties amidst the 13, this is JUST IMPOSSIBLE - and EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ALSO for Fayad and Abbas!!!!
two young men - the oppressed and the occupier.
ITS SHOWTIME !!! THE ARAFAT DISASTER WILL REVERBERATE IN ARAB LAND FOR AT LEAST 50 YEARS . ALL THOSE BLIND SIMPERING IDIOTS WHO REFUSED TO SEE THE REAL ARAFAT AND PLO ARE NOW REAPING THE DIVIDENDS OF STUPIDITY ! JUST LIKE THE POOR PEOPLE IN ZIMBABWE REAPING THE REAL MUGABE ! HOWEVER NO ONE LEARNS FROM EXPERIENCE AND ITS SHOWTIME ONCE MORE !!
Like these Aussies are saying, how can Israel expect peace from the Palestinians if terrorists with blood on their hands (i.e. murderers) and attempted murderers aren't allowed to walk the streets free from any responsibility? It's not like that in Australia. Nor Houston, where the crack epidemic is approached with an openness to let the dealers deal and smokers steal. Right, Rosie?
so pals are being freed, but then more will be taken prisoner, give 170+ take 370+, and the circle keeps going.
What's the point of propping up a stooge like Abbas if Israel keeps on running berserk in the territories ?
