By Haaretz Service Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu Israel news Middle East peaceSyrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem told the pan-Arab newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat that Israel must first declare its intention to withdraw to the 1967 borders before any kind of Syrian-Israeli talks can take place, Israel Radio reported on Friday.
Moallem's remark came as a response to statements made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said Wednesday that he was prepared to meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad immediately and without preconditions.
The Syrian foreign minister said that there is no point in "putting the cart before the horse," and that "Israel must withdraw from the occupied territories before Syria and Israel can meet."
The Prime Minister's Bureau said Wednesday that Netanyahu is willing to meet with Syrian President Assad.
Netanyahu's statement came in response to a recent Haaretz report that Syria was prepared to make "gradual peace." Arab sources told the London paper that the report in Haaretz correspond with the position held by Syria since the Madrid Peace Conference in 1991.
According to the bureau's statement, "Netanyahu is prepared to immediately set out for Damascus to meet with President Assad, or to invite him to Jerusalem, or to meet with him in a third country."
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu quickly announced that Turkey was prepared to start mediating if both parties agreed.

I realizes Assad talks as elequently as Obama Hiliary Ban all the other peace mongers who want to strangle me and so Israel and so I hold no malice against the Arabs they however should consider the alternatives rather than follow the peace monger strangle policy if it should fail they would possibly suffer as much then again they may be lucky live under a lucky star not suffer at all I need a miracle rhetoric about carts and so horses may be peace monger strategy but if a miracle should happen I am saved will the world walk away Scot free and or will any body pay serious thoughts Assad Syria hope you make the right RIGHT decision RIGHT ??? Thank You... M. S.
supporting iran, helping them destroy Israel and they only want the golan to help accomplish it!
"Israel must withdraw from the occupied territories before Syria and Israel can meet." Needless to say, that is a non-starter... first at least a semblance of diplomatic good will must be established... otherwise there is no point in the whole exercise...
Syria should stop supporting hezbollah and hamas, and israel should give up golan. then i believe there can be peace. Syrian moderate families are not so much different than moderate israeli families. at the end of the day we all wish for success and happiness and life for our families, instead of looking at each others differences, we should respect each others right to survival and happiness. Peace to all muslim and jewish brothers and sisters :)
id like always to negotiate on those terms ! this why ther will never be peace in the mid east the arabs are totally insane !
land
How about the 1922 border, the Jordan River, instead of the 1967 borders? Let those Arabs who refuse to live in peace with us leave.
What is his real position? Is it "Israel must first declare its intention to withdraw to the 1967 borders before any kind of Syrian-Israeli talks can take place"? Or is it: "Israel must withdraw from the occupied territories before Syria and Israel can meet."? But who cares. Neither proposition is morally or legally tenable.
Syria*s demand: "withdraw before the negotiations" shows her contemptuous attitude towards Israel. Peace is made betw. two equals not so that one may humiliate the other, which is, by this comment to judge, Syria*s approach to peace with Israel. Hereby, in my opinion, before any peace treaty with Israel's neighbors, be it Syria or PA, Israel should make the following condition to them all: Israel gives them 20-30 yrs to change their attitude towards Israel for more respectful one through initiating and implementing reforms in their domestic politics to take steps toward democracy, national peace education and teaching truth about history BEFORE any peace negotiations can be started. During these years cultural and scientific exchange, economic co-work and free travel betw. the countries will take place in order to get to know each other in order to create reciprocal trust. IF these co-operations are successful, FIRST THEN Israel will cede Golan to Syria and PA may have its state.
Israel should not be distracted with Syria crap. It is just a diversion from the more serious threat emanating from the fanatics in Iran. It is giving the fanatics ample uninterrupted time to complete their nukes and arm their missiles. For Syria to talk about 1967 and usurping Israel's liberated historic homeland of Golan is nothing but a piece of crap. Israel should not even waste its time on craps. Israel has been existence the past 4000 years long before there were Islamist-Jihadists marauding the region.
To make an even and simultaneous trade, Israel can give up the Heights at the same time that Syria can throw a good bye party to Hizbollah and Hamas at Damascus airport. To show further cooperation, the IDF and Syria army can supply marching bands. One make falafel and humus while the other bake the pitas.
anything from a Beauty Competition to a Golfing Championship Competition? Let's ask Tiger Woods or the Winner of the 'Miss Universe' Competition. By the same token in the History of the world and since Napoleonic times, no Conqueror of land was ever oblliged or ordered to give back land he conquered to the Defeated. Has a new Law since been established .....?
Withdraw to the 1967 borders ? Sure, right away. Wait... i have a better idea; lets climb up the Asriely Tower in TA, remove the fence surrounding the roof and kill our self right know. With the second solution, we at least decide how and when.
The dictator of Syria is not stupid and knows who he is dealing with. Netanyahu is the "right wing" politician that as prime minister gave Bethlehem, capital of Judean, city of King David and his descendant Jesus to muslim terrorist Arafat. Dictator Assad knows that Netanyahu cracks under pressure.
Syria:" Netanyahu putting the cart before the horse " 1. An adage... In modern terms: producing a "result" before establishing " the means" 2. whoever wrote this --- Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it." Should be destroyed by nations of the world for their own protection because it sounds like they are next.
Withraw so they can do what they were doing before 1967 and what Israel's enemies in Gaza it became Judenrein: Fired rockets on Israel's civilians.
The demand that Israel should withdraw from Golan before negotiating with Syria is getting very tiresome as after withdrawal negotiating has become senseless. The complete lack of realism and of historical notion from the Syrians defies understanding.
