Swastika daubed on synagogue in Germany on Rosh Hashana eve

Nazi symbol daubed on wall of Paderborn shul using chocolate on Tues. night or Wed. morning.

By The Associated Press Tags: Germany Jewish holidays Jewish World Nazi

A swastika and other graffiti were found smeared on the exterior of a synagogue in western Germany, police said Thursday.

The graffiti - which included the words Germany to the Germans scrawled next to the swastika - apparently were daubed using chocolate on the outside wall of the synagogue in Paderborn on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, police in the city said in a statement. Wednesday evening was the start of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year.

Displaying Nazi symbols is a criminal offense in Germany, and police said they had opened criminal proceedings.

Police found pieces of chocolate at the scene, but said they had no immediate word on who might have been responsible.

John, what to do if you have two friends and they are enemies ?? the germans like most other people in the world have much sympathies for the weaker.you know we help them, too. There is to less common sense on both sides. We can't solve the conflict, only try to mediate as Steinmeyer and other germans always do. The ME-conflict is a shame for the whole civilized World,in particular for the europeans.

We as Nation, as Germany should have a conscience. Ross (#4) for you to sit here and generalise that all Germans hate Jews is completely false. There are thousands of German Jews. Are they therefore self-hating? There are small factions of neo-Nazi/ignorant/hating people in every society, even in Israel. The point is that no person in any society is completely protected from acts of violence or hate, be they the minority or the majority and that's just the way the world is. I will pray for these ignorant people.

"Israel has taken in refugees and they are muslems...but of course somehow someway Israel will be condemned for this also." you are WRONG. There were no Muslim refugee. The refugees are Christian rebels who were fighting the Sudanese government, with the help of Israel and US arms. Most of refugees were send back to Egypt. Others were kept in prisons. One of them died in a hospital. For propaganda purposes Israel kept only a few.

The fact is this: there is a "holocaust industry" and "blackmailing" going on, while constantly playing the victim of WWII and of "antisemitism" At the same time: Israel continue stealing Palestinian land, buldozing Palestinian houses, shooting US-helicopter missiles on the population, raiding their houses, arresting and emprisoning without charges, torturing them, including old, sick, women and children! about 800 children in Israeli jails! more than a dozen children shot by the IDF last week! closing them within walls, and not letting them trading for a living, or just walking within their lands with so many checkpoints! settlers burning Palestinian farms, trees, stealing water and committing so many war crimes daily! WHO IS ELIMINATING PEOPLE? As to the legitimate liberation movement, they have the right to defend their people though they only have HANDMADE small arms to use against a HUGE and BARBARIC US$billion army. Their right is based on Geneva Convention and Natural Justice.

I wouldn't say I hate the British I certainly don't know all of them but I will say I dispise many of them especially those that closed the door to the Jews who were trying to run away from the Holocaust. Along with this particular group I have great animosity for the soldiers who were in British Mandated Palestine and who were so cruel to the Jews there. The icing on the cake was restricting Jews from coming home to Palestine...running for their lives and then thrown in camps again in Cyprus. The British have always had an affection for the Arabs...of course that is their business but I don't have to like it. This affection has caused much sadness for the Jews and I don't have to like that either. May I also add that I find Harry to be a pompous fool dressing as a Nazi for Halloween is inexcusable. Afterall the Nazi's bombed the heck out of England and this is how he spits on his own people. As for disliking Israel's policies..it is a Jewish State therefore you dislike Jews.Very simple

At the beginning the testing of the gas chambers was done on the mentally challenged. There were 20 million Russians killed....then of course we have the war casualties...the English from the bombings...the soldiers from fighting against the Germans...the British population from the bombings and thousands of Europeans caught up in the horrors of war not forgetting the valient American soldiers. Peculiar to point to Israel as an apartheid state given that it has Arab members of Parliament, judges, professionals of all sorts and real mobility in society. I'm not saying there isn't discrimination. Hard to avoid that when Arabs hate Jews and have always regarded them as second class citizens, if not vermin. By comparison what sort of mobility do Jews have in the old Judea and Samria, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, etc. Guess that this is an unfair question but its instructive to think about it. As to reparations, its a matter of national responsibility. You are right in suggesting that today not all Germans are horrid and evil people but that doesn't obviate the responsibility of this generation to respond to the malfeasance of the previous generation and not repeat its mistake.

It's never been easy to be different. I went to a jewish school and we were always having things like kike and yid shouted at us. Occasionally there were serious assaults, one involving an air rifle. Up north in Penrith my brother made the fatal mistake of telling his ;mates, he was jewish. They made his life a misery and drove him to near suicide. Believe me Chris you get a feel for who your friends are. As for me being afraid, maybe that would explain why I have 3 German shepherd dogs. But it's easy to blend if you just keep quiet and I look very english, so that's what I usually do. . Let's not get above ourselves though Chris, as anti=smitism has always been part of the old school, british establishment. Do you think that outside of London people really care about Political Corresctness. Why do you make a joke out of what is ultimately racial hatred. If we were talking about any other minority, you'd have head bowed, with cap in hand, apologising profusely. But with jews its ok

Maybe you can explain to me how the notion that racism and genocide can't be tolerated is "blackmailing of the German people"? If you are talking about reparations, well that is another and unrelated story. But its convenient to focus on that & not talk about the lives stolen & debilitated, the art, homes and businesses destroyed & and stolen. As to Palestine being returned to the Palestinian people, Israel is not of the view that the Palestinian people should be without a homeland. The slight rub is that the Government representing the Palestinian people, Hamas, has an official policy of eliminating Israel and Israelies. It won't recognize agreements or negotiate peace. And its more than policy, there is conduct to match in the form of rockets targetting and hitting civilian areas. So, what's the solution? Should Jews move back to Germany & the Arab countries from which they most recently came where they were unwelcome, beaten, murdered and stolen from? Not on your life sweetie.

lost his job after thirteen years of employment as Parks and Rec. Supervisor because he had drawn a swastika in red paint on a wooden board. This happened about two months ago and was in the local papers. An inquiry revealed that while on the job he had often made references to "ovens" to a German-Jewish employee. The Town of Greenwich was quite correct to fire him, in my opinion. Swastikas and "joking" remarks about the Holocaust should not be permitted in the workplace.

To the extent there is any tolerance, any non-chalance about any of these acts, any marginalization of their importance, the monster is fed. Obviously when people are hurt there is a different and significant dimension to the story. But the really insideous story is the same in all of these sordid tales and that is hatred, very dangerous hatred, based on nonsense!

All the points I have raised are open to debate and i welcome it. The fact the UK are mired in Iraq and are taking the fight to the taliban means we do not have the manpower to do anything about Sudan. Even though there are a great many people screaming at our leaders to do something. The UK has taken in 3000 people from the Congo and that mess, so we are doing our bit. I am not responsible for the actions of my country before the Holocaust, but I am aware of the Kindertransport and the fact that thousands of jewish children were given sanctuary. Not enough I agree but I am the first to admit that. What I am saying is that in the scheme of things an idiot daubing idiotic things on a wall of a Synagogue is unimportant. Offensive yes important no. You say i hate Israel maybe I do, not the Israeli people but certainly its policies, but your hatred of the UK shines through as well

I appreciate what you say and you are right, a building is an easy target for those who will hate. And they will hate, doesn't matter what I say or what you say to these people they will hate us for saying it, hopefully the law will land on them like a ton of bricks. However it is my personal belief, that crimes against the person, whether it leads from a mindless act of vandalism or not, should take precedent. So yes we should confront these people and fight them on their turf and ask them why? and try to educate them in their error of their ways. In the hope of preventing worse, but to show the true horror of hate to make the rest of the world feel repugnance, we should show the realities of hate and what becomes of it. The vast majority of people reading this article who are not jewish and will say "So what?". And I appreciate this is an Israeli newspaper, but there are a lot of people who read this paper who are not jewish as a legitimate source of information.

Chris, what happens to buildings is a prelude to what happens to people when the opportuntiy presents itself. Structures are an easier target to deface than screaming people who can fight back. I don't make distinctions. Burning crosses by the KKK are similar to the hate crime against the black lady you mentioned. Thery are preludes to bigger things against humans. What was done to this lady is undescribable, and on the same level as what Nazis did to the Jews. It is a newsworthy story worth covering, yet Haaretz choose to report an incidence of vandalism which whilst repulsive has not involved the torture of a person becuse of their race, and actually has more column inches than a Rabbi being stabbed in Frankfurt recieved. I am trying to say that what happens to people is more important than what happens to buildings. This will be cleaned off by the end of the day.

Of course Hitler was not a misunerstood hippy. Hitler was a vile disgustng excuse for a human being who needed to be eradicated like the piece of vermin he was. What I am saying is that in the scheme of things this is a non story, a bit of graffiti on a synagogue has had more lines written about it than a Rabbi in Frankfurt who was stabbed. I am pleased you are proud to be a British Jew because according to many posters on Haaretz you re in great danger.

The first documented act of genocide was perpretrated by the Romans at Carthagena. In fact I would suggest that the Romans killed more people as a percentage of the world's population than anybody else before or since. If you discount genghis Khan and Joseph Stalin of course.

First of all I am not your darling...secondly I am the daughter of a German born in Leipzig who knows full well what went on in the Second World War...so please do not insult me by saying I know nothing about Germany. The seeds of hate are planted in that country and every generation or so they sprout their ugly weeds and do damage to the world. Underestimating the numbers the deaths in the second World War were about 40 plus million people...thanks to the Germans. The damage in the first World War was also catatrophic. You bungled the rescue of the Israeli athletes at Munich and heaven only knows what is up your sleeves now. Your history does not speak well for itself....Germany a beautiful country filled with ugliness.

I am merely stating that having been born 21 years after the war ended i can no more be held responsible for the Shoah than my daughter born half a century after the end of the war. I simply do not know why this is newsworthy when there are Shoah survivors in Israel going hungry tonight. There is genocide happening today now in Sudan. Israel bombed Syria at the beginning of the week. The IDF has invaded Gaza as a result of idiots firing rockets. And for your information according to the Law of return they are Jews. Otherwise by your definition Israel has ceased to exist as a Jewish State

Come on Schmidy, tell the truth. What you don't like is Jews exercising their right of self defence vigorously. Come on, put the whole Israeli/Pal thing in context. Who refused to recognize the U.N.'s creation of Israel? Who denied Jews entry to their holiest spiritual site and used it as a garbage dump? Who allied themeselves with Hitler, before there was a state of Israel, through the creation of the Arab brigade? Who invaded Israel in 1967? Who has been targeting civilian populations for death and destruction? Bully? What a load of bratwurst! Never Again Schmidty. And by the way, just because your father says he didn't kill Jews and says that he was in the kriegsmarine doesn't mean he didn't kill Jews. Moreover, this isn't about your father. Its about primitive, ignorant, uncivilized, jealous, opportunistic and pathetic hatreds that were harboured on a wide spread basis by German's in Hitler's era and the degree that it continues today.

By 'our people' Chris I meant the jews not the British, of which I am proudly both. Swastikas may be a symbol of piece, but in a more relevant way was also the symbol of the mass murder of six million jews and many millions of others. Or perhaps you're going to tell us that Hitler was just a misunderstood hippy.

No come on Chris. Just admit that your off- handed comment was (a) insensitive and (b) stupid. That the swastika may be a symbol of love in India is completely irrelevant, unless you are suggesting that its use on the synagogue was demonstration of affection. "Germany for Germans", of course, suggests not. Hatred of people for reasons of race, religion and nationality is news worthy and worthy of condemnation; and more so when we are dealing with expressions of hatred such as handing out candies when people are maimed and killed. What is remarkable is that it is not more newsworthy than it apparenly is.

    Swastika and chocolate: No neo-nazis
    • Gerhard
    • 13.09.07
    • 23:27

No neo-nazi would use chocolate for that (my opinion). I think it was a boy. Certainly, it's ugly. But do not exaggerate your judgement. It is true: Jews are not very much beloved in Germany. The ordinary German thinks that they receive a lot of money from the state and that he has to pay for it. But, there is another point. The Jewish institutions, i.e. Zentralrat der Juden, always criticize acts of people who do not respect for 100 percent Jewish sentiments. They even criticized the Pope. This is a big reason for anti-Jewish attitudes.

First of all a very happy and peaceful New Year for both of you. Now to your sweet wishes for the Jews of Germany. You are speaking about an old and sick man, whose life expectancy is very grim. There are less than 20.000 German Jews, many are old and sick and as you know, it is difficult to transfer and old oak tree. When speaking about Jews in Germany, a hoax is presented to you, because more than 80% are Jews and non-Jews from the former SU. Many were social tourists in Israel before. So you want to reanimate a patient who is in his last breaths. The story reminds me of the Indian reservations, but contrary to these all Jewish institutions in Germany must be protected by the police. Not in order to protect Jews, but to protect the image of Germany abroad. Otherwise you would have much more stories like this one about the swastikas. The more than 18000 neo-Nazi incidents last year are a clear message.

Your sarcasm as well as your posts are disturbing. You know full well that the creatures in Israel posing as wanna be Nazi's are not Jews. This is a problem that Israel has to deal with because their screening process for new immigrants is flawed. Many people, find it convenient,to pretend to be Jews when they need something and these creatures needed to get out of Mother Russia. Of course living in a democracy and full freedom in Israel they were able to shed their mask and reveal their ugliness. To compare this with age old Jew hatred is like comparing apples to shoes...those of us who are realists understand the dire circumstances that face Jews and Israel today..thanks to the likes of you and your cronies we have been alerted to the danger that lurks. Again thank you for stating your hatred. We know you are all out there and therefore we are able to fight this horror. Remember Chris we are not the same Jews as the Nazi's confronted in World War11.Remember that and remember Never Again

FYI, swastikas were found in excavated 2000-year old synagogues among other decorative designs. Obviously they had a positive meaning for those ancient shul-goers. Since these 21st century "decorations" have been daubed in tasty chocolate - who knows, perhaps these daubers just wanted to revive this ancient meaning and wish a "sweet Rosh Hashanah" . (Just kidding). David

It is amusing to see the constant denial of those Israel-bashers who write from Germany about events in their own country. Misusing in an obscene way the fact that there are a few non-Jewish neo-Nazis from the former Soviet Union who have stranded in Israel, it would be interesting if they are going so far with their usual cheating and hiding as calling the German neo-Nazis sitting in their parliaments equally Jewish neo-Nazis. Ironically enough, a big portion of their Jewish hoax community they have established to deceive the outside world, is composed of non-Jews from the same countries from the former SU. Did you know by the way, that the neo-Nazi parties in Germany get money from the state for their activities, in the millions?

No, Axel, it wasn't Jewish neo-Nazis, and no Ross, the crime does not prove anything about the German people. All it means is that there are still a few bad thugs in Germany, just as there are everywhere else, like the Israeli neo-Nazi thugs. I believe that the Germany of today is a fine country, tolerant and very admirable.

A swastika and other graffiti were found smeared on the exterior of a synagogue in western Germany, police said Thursday. Displaying Nazi symbols is a criminal offense in Germany, and police said they had opened criminal proceedings against the synagogue director for displaying the symbols. Just kidding! :)
