Study: 79% of single Israeli women harassed at workplace

On Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Israeli poll finds only 3% of women speak out.

Some 79 percent of single women and 15 percent of married women suffer sexual harassment in the workplace, but only 3 percent of those women ever complain, according to a new study by Dr. Abigail Mor of Tel-Hai Academic College.

According to the study, which was published in honor of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, 38.5 percent of single women experienced sexual harassment by their employers once in a while, 40.8 percent experienced it often, and only 14.7 percent of women never experienced sexual harassment.

Among married women, 10 percent experienced unwanted sexual contact. 5 percent reported that they were harassed frequently.

The study included 461 women from the ages of 18 to 65 and referred to sexual harassment in the work place by employers or authority figures. Most of the women defined their work relations with the harassers as polite.

Despite the high statistics, only a minority of the harassed women ever filed a complaint. Only 3 percent of single women reported complaining, while only 1.2 percent of married women did.

It seems Israeli men are some of the most uneducated, chauvinist and incapable of receiving a no for an answer. However, I have googled Dr. Abigail Mor and didn't find her anywhere.

A solution that my work situation is....

A solution might be splitting of sexes at work. At my location where I work women all work in one area and there is a dividing door that the men work on the other side of the wall. We have to use security badges to enter to and fro but the only mutual place is the break room where there are tea provided, hot water, coffee, vending machines and magazines of positive nature. I feel comfortable there and no pressure as I am very shy and scared of men. Safety zone. Rankoo-Karoon

You are absolutely right! if you dress cheap - don't expect respect. (this is true for the USA as well. And I wonder what was the definition of Sexual Harrasment.

Not that I think this is right but have you seen the way they dress for work in Israel? Short skirts and boobs hanging out does not say "take me seriously" in the work place it says "I want you to look" and "come hit on me". Now that said if someone is touching them or saying inappropriate things this is unacceptable, but if the statistics are so high because they consider a coworker checking out your exposed cleavage as harassment then maybe they should cover themselves up more at work.

Yes, women are in general harrassed in Israel. It stems from a cultural thing of little respect for women, and men are allowed to behave as they please, because they are men, this spills over to the children, and women and children suffer all types of violence, because men are not directed to have boundaries, hus a lack of respect for women?girsl in schools, home and from the courts.

"women as secondary citizens is built into the culture of Israel. . ." - jewdoc spouse True, the ultra-macho nature of Israeli society has been blatant from the earliest years despite the legal equality provided women. " . . . due to the religious right that keeps women "in their place" - jewdoc spouse Naw, the Haredi are not the source of sexual harassment in Israel. The ultra-Othodox are, as you say, quite repressive, and their women must like it because they happily submit. But the sexual harassment of women in Israel exists because most men consider it their right and most women don't consider it worth complaining about, much less doing something about it. It is just part of the culture and not 'slavery'.

women as secondary citizens is built into the culture of Israel and represents a HUGE step backwards in a "democracy" due to the religious right that keeps women "in their place"...which is one of basic slavery. A human abomination.
