State Prosecutor Shendar announces plan to quit in the summer

Timing of announcement allows committee to select successor to convene, in bid to ensure smooth transition.

State Prosecutor Eran Shendar announced Wednesday that he plans to quit in the summer, after three years in the post.

Shendar informed Attorney General Menachem Mazuz of his decision, as well as the different prosecutors across the country. The timing of the announcement means that the committee to select Shendar's replacement can convene, in an effort to ensure a smooth transition to the next state prosecutor.

In interviews over the past few months, Shendar indicated that he had no desire to remain in the post for a full six-year term, but declined to state when he would resign.

He told Haaretz in an October 2006 interview that, "six years is too long a period, I won't remain here for the entire period.

"After I finish here, I won't need any cooling-off period. I'll go back to taking care of my own family, and not in the financial sense."

Shendar, 55, was appointed state prosecutor in August 2004, with the support of the majority of the selection committee. Prior to his appointment, he served for 11 years as head of the Police Investigations Department.

The publicity given to Mr. Shendar upon his public statement to leave his job as State Attorney is so far not backed up by his written resignation to become effective 1.8.2007. Which becomes understandable by the present amount of corruptive criminal cases in the public and governmental sectors. ? It is to be noted that State Attorney Shendar fills in ?ex ? officio? for the Attorney General whenever such a need arises. As at the moment the investigation of Prime Minister Olmert possible role in the question of the Bank Leumi privatization. Here Mr. Mazuz as Attorney General?s sister still function as legal adviser to the Minister of Finance and Mr. Shendar upon a AG Mazuz request fills in here as acting Attorney General. The successor to Mr. Shendar has to be a man who was not involved into any, even slightest ?possible strange cases.? This may take sometime as well as it is to be hoped that Mr. Shendar will still be able to work in his successor. - The statement made by Mr. Shendar "?After I finish here, I won't need any cooling-off period. I'll go back to taking care of my own family, and not in the financial sense?.." has to be elaborated. Does this mean that Mr. Shendar thinks in term of getting an appointment as a judge in his case at the District Court in view of his experiences, his 55 years of age still will have all possibilities open to him.
