By 7 P.M., it was already clear that the army of runners was out to conquer the streets of Tel Aviv. Thousands of athletes in uniform black T-shirts bearing the logo of Nike, the company behind the event, made their way to Kikar Rabin, on other days better known for political demonstrations than for sport.

The 20,000 participants in the Nike-sponsored night run showed that Israelis can also show sportsmanship.
