Ajantha Mendis spins Sri Lanka to crushing Twenty20 victory
Ajantha Mendis produced extraordinary bowling figures of six for eight to lead Sri Lanka to a crushing 82-run win over Zimbabwe in the opening Twenty20 World Cup match yesterday. Mendis, returning to the side following injury, took two wickets in his first over and went on to surpass his own record of figures six for 16 against Australia in 2011. Mendis' namesake Jeevan Mendis took three for 24 as both spinners bamboozled the Zimbabweans, who were skittled for just 100 in the Group C match. Sri Lanka powered to its total of 182 for four by a 94-run fourth-wicket stand off 51 balls between Kumar Sangakkara and Jeevan Mendis. Sangakkara top-scored with 44 off 26 balls, and Mendis finished on 43 not out. (Reuters)
NFL great Earl Campbell to undergo nerve treatment
NFL Hall of Famer Earl Campbell says he is undergoing nerve treatment after doctors ruled out concerns that he might have Lou Gehrig's disease. The 57-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner said yesterday he will be hospitalized in Houston through the weekend. He compared the effects of the nerve problem to a robot that moves its right leg when instructed to move its left. Campbell was among the NFL's great power backs, barreling over tacklers and never shying from contact in eight seasons. But his punishing running style cut short his career and left with him with a litany of chronic health problems. Campbell underwent knee replacement surgery last year and still requires a walker to move around. (AP )
