Atlanta Braves pull out another 1-0 win over Rockies
Tim Hudson pitched seven scoreless innings and the Atlanta Braves posted their second straight 1-0 victory over Colorado Rockies yesterday, winning both baseball games with an unearned run. This was an especially galling loss for the Rockies. Juan Francisco raced home with the lone run when Rockies starter Jhoulys Chacin (2-5 ) dropped a routine throw back to the mound from his catcher. That was enough for Hudson (14-5 ), who stranded eight Colorado runners. Craig Kimbrel completed the shutout with a scoreless ninth for his 34th save. (AP )
Makarova, Soares win U.S. Open mixed doubles title
A last-second addition to the U.S. Open mixed doubles field, Ekaterina Makarova and Bruno Soares are now Grand Slam champions. The unseeded duo beat Kveta Peschke and Marcin Matkowski 6-7 (8 ), 6-1, 12-10 tiebreak in yesterday's final. Soares, a 30-year-old Brazilian doubles specialist, had turned down Makarova before the Open because he was set to play with his regular partner, Australian Jarmila Gajdosova. But with the minutes ticking down to sign up for the tournament, he realized they didn't have a good enough ranking to get in. If he teamed with Makarova, with whom he had played a couple of times before, they'd get in. (AP )
