Manchester City regained first place in the Premier League last night, thanks to a 1-0 victory over local rival Manchester United. Defender Vincent Kompany scored the only goal of the game just before half time, powering home a corner with an unstoppable header from point-blank range.
City had several opportunities to put the game beyond United in the second half, but some profligate finishing, coupled with desperate defending by United, kept the score at 1-0 and the home fans' nerves on edge right through the five minutes of injury time.
The victory leaves City and United tied on 83 points at the top of the table, with City just ahead thanks to a superior goal difference.
Both teams have two games left to play, but City knows that victory in both those games will give it a first championship since 1968.
