Sources: Iran gave Hamas missile that can hit Tel Aviv
MI chief: Hamas has missile with a range of 60km; Hamas refuses to discuss reports of test-fire.
By Jonathan Lis Tags: Hamas Israel news Gaza IDFIran has supplied Hamas operatives in the Gaza Strip a missile capable of striking Tel Aviv, defense sources said on Tuesday.
Military Intelligence Chief General Amos Yadlin told the Knesset foreign affairs and defense committee earlier Tuesday that Hamas has recently tested a missile capable of reaching targets at a distance of 60 kilometers.
Hamas has refused to confirm or deny reports of the test.
The missile was fired into the Mediterranean Sea, Yadlin told lawmakers, though he did not say whether the weapon was manufactured in Gaza or was smuggled into the Strip from abroad.
The MI chief said this latest development is indicative of the Hamas regime's growing military capabilities.
Yadlin said Hezbollah, the Shi'ite guerilla group based in southern Lebanon, has also been stockpiling weapons.
"The organization continues to arm itself and it is amassing many weapons by [acquiring them from] Iran via Syria," the MI chief said. "It is accumulating these arms [and maintaining them] south of the Litani River, inside civilian homes, in contravention of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 [which brought an end to the Second Lebanon War in 2006]."
The general also reported that Syria continued to play a key role in arming both organizations.
"Syria has turned into the main factory and weapons cache for Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as for Syria itself, with financial aid from Iran," Yadlin said.
"Syria is operating on two parallel tracks - benevolence toward the West, and in its backyard it is becoming a weapons factory for the axis of evil," Yadlin said.
As for Iran, Yadlin warned that an Iranian plant used for uranium enrichment in the city of Qom, whose existence was recently exposed by the West, is geared for military purposes.
"The plant in Qom was not intended for civilian purposes as the Iranians claim," Yadlin said. "The facility contains advanced centrifuges which can be used to expedite the process of uranium enrichment. These are the latest model of centrifuges."
"This past summer was the quietest from a security standpoint that we have had in many years," Yadlin said, citing a combination of Israeli deterrence alongside Arab expectations regarding the Mideast policy of the Obama administration.
Nonetheless, Yadlin noted that Israel's neighbors are focusing on building up their forces.
"Underneath the surface, our enemies, led by Iran, are continuing to gain strength," Yadlin said. "Iran is financing these activities, training forces, and arming Hamas and Hezbollah."
The MI chief said Hamas is currently not interested in confrontation with Israel. Rather, it is devoting its energies to solidifying its rule in the Gaza Strip while continuing its weapons smuggling operations.

What do you expect? Israel has been during the past 60 years bullying every body in the Middle East. Pay back time, my friends.
"Iran is the Ho Chi Minh trail running thru Gaza." - allang Really? Iran is no where near Gaza and there is no 'Ho Chi Minh trail. "The Laos insurgent rat-lines winding thru the Bekka valley and ending in Hezbollah`s back yard." - allang There are no Laos insurgents in the Bekka. "Let`s face it..." - allang in Los Angeles How is the 'medicinal marijuana in La-La Land anllang? There is absolutely no parallel or connection between the Vietnam War and the current mideast situation. A closer one would be the smuggling of arms to Jewish insurgents in Palestine between WW II and Israel's Declaration of Independence. Many of the same methods are being used. The circumstances and locations of the insurgents are similar.
I am sure that if rockets were fired from Monaco into France, there would be a strong response.-Alberto I am sure that if France blockaded Monaco's access to the outside world as Israel does Gaza, they would be justified in firing rockets at France. -
Mr.Taha, please tell ypur brethren that Jordan the Palestinian state is waiting the return of it,s exiles ,and there,s plenty money available ,just ask Hanan,Saeb,Nabil,Moustafa,Mohamed,Mahmoud ,t hey have been receiving plenty of it since Yassir left his friends behind and went from this earth.
Political analyst, oops fool ,reckons Israel was kicked out of Sinai in 1973(Yom KippurWar) maybe he,s been reading Arafat or Nasrallah,s book of so called Arab victories this last century .The original history books ,ones that count, say the Egyptian 8th Army was surrounded by Israeli forces and was on the point of being annihilated or captured ,with the IDF in sight of Cairo,as for Southern Lebanon in 2000 and Gazain 2005 the only kicking was done to the Arab myth of brave fighters ,the same cowards who hid behind children and women in Gaza and those innocent villagers in South Lebanon taken hostages by brave(sic)Hezbolah thugs .Any more myths you would like unmasked, fool ?
Great idea Morris ,plus plenty of oil which Israel can control and sell to Obama at discounted rates.
Carmen ,what exactly is in Dimona and how do you no for sure as i haven,t seen any military shows of strength so common to Arab dictatorships ,ever, facts ,please ,not Al-Jazeera thumb sucking propaganda .
American observer tell your bulls-t to Saeb Erekat ,Minister of Disinformation ,for Palestine as peace will only come when the Arab/Muslim world recognises Israel,s right to exist ,not before.
Not peaceful ,but rather pieceful ,in pieces after blowing themselves up.
So, let's see-Israelis are just sitting idly waiting for the birds to fly from Lebanon, Gaza, and Syria; not to mention firing the nuke or at best smuggling the nuke from Iran into Israel and detonating it? Big question...didn't Eli Cohen give his life to stop Syria from getting missiles, or at least to stop Syrian guns overlooking the Galilee? So, how in hell did the great Israeli leadership, beginning with Rabin, allow the arabs to field missiles capable of hitting every inch of the country? Not too swift!! I'd say that what Rabin got might be justified for all of the leadership that followed him. (of course marxist stooges such as Gideon Levy would welcome the missiles as just retribution).
Let's face it... Iran is the Ho Chi Minh trail running thru Gaza. The Laos insurgent rat-lines winding thru the Bekka valley and ending in Hezbollah's back yard. Tehran is the Pariah state that uses smuggling as the axis of influence. It is the benefactor supplying Katyusha and new-age rockets. All the while professing morality and world ethics. In the religious center of Qom, new-generation centrifuges will spin at supersonic speed with the benevolent approval of the Clerics. Some one once said... hypocrisy is the language of racist men. Well the Islamic Republic is the new standard for world delirium. Where attention seeking meets arrogance and volatile behavior.
You wrote, it`s really simple to ask for a war while living 3000 miles away isn`t it?" Answer: Iran is developing not only nuclear bombs, but missiles that can reach the U.S. (and your beloved Canada). It is led by a nut job who claims there was no Holocaust, but who wants to make one to bring the Mahdi. Gaza had its chance for peace when Israel withdrew. Iran sent it the missiles do destroy any hope of peace. As for being 3,000 miles away, the property that I was building in Safed, Israel, was hit by a missile from Lebanon. The housing bust here messed up my attempt to move to Israel, but I DO expect to move there. Cheers.
the UN General Assembly Discussions on the Goldstone Report. Mr. Goldstone is a decent man. I bet he is ashamed of his semetic and non-semetic jewish Brethren who lie lie lie.
I am sure that if rockets were fired from Monaco into France, there would be a strong response. And a massively strong response if Macau based rockets were launched into Mainland China... Just because it is effectively a city state does not mean they are immune to war.
it's really simple to ask for a war while living 3000 miles away isn't it?
Obama is, a Vice president Cheney said, dithering with Afghanistan. Obama is also dithering with Iran. Israel, you can not afford to mimic Obama's weak ways. Take care of Iran this year, 5770, as the Torah Code indicates, and take care of Gaza with it. If you continue to wait, they will both take care of you. http://arkcode.com/custom3_65.html
One day the cost of the beligerence of the Israeli politicians will be calculated and the mistakes will be consequential. Had Israel continued to use Palestinians as slave labour its economic position would be potentialy improved. As politicians manipulate the emotions of the people they are diminishing a capacity for long term self reliance for Israel The American Jewish lobby will be eventually be seen for what they are, unconcious perpetrators of conflict which does not affect them as it does on Israeli residents.
How many years should Israel wait? How many victims would be sufficient to legitimize a self-defence action?
Should Hamas target the West Bank Jewish settlements then the questions will differ to its targetting Israel. What could the Iraeli government say to that?
Mr. Taha, please make sure first that Arab countries respect Palestinians first and give them citizenship in Lebanon,Jordan,Arab emirates and other Arab countries this will provide them equal right and will not have second class citizens. To your information Palestinians get Israeli citizenship in Israel. So clean yourhouse first!!
Israel should have no freedom to repeat the last Gaza adventure.
If this can be confirmed, Israeli pre-emptive policy can be much firmer. And though I hope push doesn't come to shove, if its after the fact, if Hamas does fire such a missle into populated areas of Tel Aviv, then there will be little restraint in the response. I really do hope that either of these events do not materialize.
It was impossible to get anyone in the American media to print letters to the editor which contained technical facts that made it clear that the Bush administration was making claims which were not true. It has been 106 years since Tsiolkovsky published his Rocket Equation. This equation is still true, and immutable. A solid propellent rocket capable of flying 60 kilometers and delivering any significant payload has to be a substantial device. Iran produces a large number of artillery rockets. The only one with a range over about 45 km and under 100 km is quite large. Those with a longer range are huge. The assertion that the rocket was Iranian seems odd as the Fajr-5 is not something that could be smuggled easily. Nor can it be handled and launched easily. The rocket tested was sent out to sea, and we are to believe it was Iranian. It might be. If it was then Israel's blockade has a huge hole in it. Or it could be that the Gaza Gang has continued to improve their rockets.
It is time for Israelis to understand that their occupation of the Holy Land of Palestine is an unnatural way of building state. This unnatural way of building the Israeli state in 1948 lies behind the future destruction that Israel will face. Israelis were kicked out of Sina Desert in 1973, and then kicked out of South Lebanon in 2000, and kicked out of Gaza Strip in 2005. Soon (sooner than Israelis think), Israelis with their progressive aggression of Arabs will cause will bring about their destruction in a war where IDF will be a weak party in it. If Jews want to live peacefully in Palestine, they should live with Palestinians having equal rights and paying back for the murders against Palestinians, and governed by a Palestinian Government in the whole Palestine Land (West Bank + Gaza + "Israel Now"). Any other option is a step towards the destruction of Israel.
Perhaps you should have a look at the Hamas charter. The Palestinians put a claim on the complete territory of Israel and want to push all jews into the sea. So what would be a suitable compromise for you? Push only every second jew into the sea?
it's only fair.
Make peace now before it is tool late.

Why should the palestinians make peace when they can wait 15 years for Israel to disappear? Peace, as you can see, is only in Israel's interests. However, it will not come without ceding part of Jerusalem - and the Haredim cannot accept that, for the Messiah will never forgive them if they do. They will prefer to have a single state, Israel or Palestine, as long as Jerusalem remains united. So, the end game, is not a peace treaty but a single state. In time, only the most observant Jews (haredim) will live in it waiting for the arrival of the messiah, and most other so called secular Israelis will immigrate to USA.
Tel Aviv is more densely populated and I think serves as the heart of Israel. Arab countries or others who think it's ok to strike Israel in its present tiny form I think must reconsider. Israel is a force to be considered and rightly so. The Jewish people and all other Israeli's have had enough of being messed around by self serving facists. The facists of the world should leave Israel alone and come to Africa, they will fit right in. We will send in the Elephants to jog around their camps.
... such as giving the Kurds some missiles. I'm sure the Kurds would appreciate help from the IDF. They could kill two birds with one stone: Iran and Turkey. An independent Kurdistan would be a good ally for Israel. MV
A few missiles on civilian population will be used to create a fear. But the primary target will be Dimona. That is why Netanyahu has no option to start a war - in fact, he has nothing. That is why Israel is out of the loop in the US-Iran talks. Obama is only pretending to listen to Netanyahu to keep US jews happy. Real business is not happening with Netanahu.
israel has no long-term chance of surviving without making peace with the palestinian people and the rest of the arab world. they can go on like this for another 5-10 years, maybe 15 years, but then what?? a full peace treaty between palestine and israel will very much benefit the people of palestine and israel.
I think his point is, "You can't hit a man wearing glasses"...even if he has fired 8,000 rockets at you and your children.
I'm shocked! I'm absolutely speechless. I can't believe this is true. Such nice, friendly people.
system which will give it the ability to shoot down aircraft anywhere in Israeli airspace. They will protect Israel
Wrong again Peter. Singapore comes after Macau, if it still exists, and Monaco. Like Gaza, they are all urban statelets. Where heavy air or artillery attack would cause unacceptable civilian casualties and be considered a war crime. And your point was... ?
The thing about Tel Aviv is whether or not missiles can hit Ben Gurion Airport. Once they can, no airline will be willing to fly in or out and the only way to get to Israel will be by boat from Cypress like in the early years. If that's not a major problem then you don't know what is.
Syria and Assad are both dysfunctional. You can't ask for the Golan back while manufacturing missiles and weapons to attack Israel. Maybe someone needs to explain how showing you truly want peace works. Assad is not to be trusted on any level. He is just a ruthless leader and part of the Axis Of Evil. I just hope he understands the Israeli flag can fly very easily over Damascus if hes not careful.
""This past summer was the quietest from a security standpoint that we have had in many years," Yadlin said..." The bible says this in psalms 89:30-37 paraphrased "..if David's sons forsake my law l will visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes...nevertheless my loving kindness l will not utterly take from David.." What a blessed lot.
temper temper.
off topic and just for you smart ar*: the most populated place on Earth is actually Macau, not Singapore. So, in your words: Another slogan put to rest but it wont stop you from repeating your half knowledge.
I don't think Israel will care much about U.N. resolutions, Australian leftists who post on Talkback, or Norwegian academic boycotts if Hamas fires on Tel Aviv. Israel will go into Gaza and wipe Hamas out. It would have no choice.
thousands of times over Did not notice you or the UNHRC humanitarians complain till Israel gave a return serve. Has Israel rearmed after Cast Lead? No idea and neither have you but you can bet your last slogan your friends are in for hot time if they try it on. No doubt the gutless wonders of the Hamas leadership will be well shelterd from return fire as was Hassan Nasrallah but provide nothing for their civillians so they can cry war crimes. PS A military target does not mean they have to hold still and be hit with impunity. That's called war.
No surprise there. We knew that some day they would have the capability to cover the whole Israel,be it from Lebanon,Syria,or Gaza. But they should know the price for bombing Tel-aviv,Haifa,Netanya,,,,,,. Make it clear for them!
When Bush wanted a quick pop in the polls he would just crank up the terror warning to amber or red. The frightened minions would cuddle up to safe Daddy Bush in the ballot box. It was all a lie of course. The terror threat not only had not changed, it was an impossible scale to measure anyway. Likewise Netanyahu must be feeling scared, because lately he's been making war war noises on Har habayit, and now he's threatening all of Tel Aviv. No coincidence that there's also going to be an air raid siren 'test' today. How transparent can you be.
Would they dare?
another slogan put to rest but it wont stop them repeating it.
BTW has Israel re-armed itself after Cast Lead?
fight in the city without uniforms other than to get the predictable civillian casualties and the advantages of those in the world media and the UNHRC farce.
the answer is yes. During the Lebanon and gaza wars, the narcissistic youths of Tel Aviv were only concerned about Sheinkin St.
Yes, of course. Considering that fact that nearly half of Israel resides in the metro-sprawl that is Gush Dan, and I'd bet that more than 90% of it's economic activity, and well, I live here. So yeah, I care more about Tel Aviv than Sderot.
You are very careful about security council resolutions. Why you do not execute the ones that ask Israel to give back to Palestinians their rights. I do not call for the destructions of any nation, but it looks that Israel is vying / speeding up its own destruction through depriving the Palestinians of their basic reights. Make peace now before it is tool late.
Why is this news? Is Tel Aviv any more part of Israel than Sderot? Are attacks against Sderot any less serious than attacks against Tel Aviv? Ehud Barak seems to think so.
