Some 100 Palestinians clash with IDF soldiers in Hebron
Dozens of protesters march to Tomb of the Patriarchs to denounce Israel's new list of national heritage sites.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Hebron Israel news PalestiniansSome 100 Palestinian protesters marched to the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron on Monday and clashed with Israel Defense Forces soldiers there, following the government's decision to include it on its list of protected Jewish holy sites.
A crowd of Palestinian youths pelted Israeli soldiers with stones and empty bottles on Monday, drawing tear gas and stun grenades in the most serious violence in this volatile West Bank city in months.
The Israel Defense Forces said one soldier was lightly wounded, while Palestinians said three protesters suffered from tear gas inhalation.
Netanyahu told ministers during a special cabinet meet on Sunday that the rightist religious party Shas persuaded him add both the Hebron site as well as Rachel's Tomb to the list.
"Our existence depends not only on the IDF or our economic resilience - it is anchored in," he said, "the national sentiment that we will bestow upon the coming generations and in our ability to justify our connection to the land."
The plan has a government budget of over NIS 500,000 to renovate and restore the national heritage sites.

"If our Arab friends can not except [sic] Jews visiting our religouse sites, WHY should we allow them to visit the Arab sites in our lands? Keep the trash off the mount of olives and the site of the Temple..." Who is "we"? You live in NY, not in Israel. As for not allowing visits to the Temple of the Mount, how can Israeli Arabs be prevented? They are citizens of Israel. Jews illegally living in Hebron are not ciizens of the occupied territories so they can be legally prevented...if Israel actually followed international law.
"Protecting" Abraham's tomb is merely a provocative move to upset Pals and to establish a further Jewish presence on Arab land. Bibi and his ilk love war.
If our Arab friends can not except Jews visiting our religouse sites, WHY should we allow them to visit the Arab sites in our lands? Keep the trash off the mount of olives and the site of the Temple.Screw them, its a two way street ,if they do not like it,to bad.
why not-what is there to think about except more of the same!
I don't think anybody wants to wish away the existence of a legitimate historical site; it's just they realize the Romans put it out of existence nearly two thousand years ago.
Indeed, there are 9000 documented histry of palestinian existance in historic Palestine. Read the Torah didn,t our Patriarch Abraham have to pay 40 shekel for the piece of land wher he and Sarah are burried in Hebron. To whome he had to pay for that piece of property, or do you pretend to not only change history but also facts of the Torah. Who were these people living there when Abraham arrived into Hebron or was it an empty piece of land and then Arabs arrived into it 1400 years ago and built the Al Aqsa Mosque. Please let,s be a bit more realistics bthe people have their legitimate claims and both deserve a peceful life. Salaam, Shalom, peace.
"This is 2010, Janice and land deeds are not predicated upon historical writings" Why not? Or are you trying to "wish away" the existence of a ligitimate historical state
Palestinians have a documented history of 10k years?? Amazing? The al Aksa mosque was built on TOP of of Solomon's temple!!! Where are these documents? If documents were written on parchment and stones a mere 1400 yrs ago. I wonder what the documents were going back 9000 years!!!!!
Why should Israel have to sacrifice sacred principles when the Islamic agenda is set to corrupt history and to become the dominant religion in that area?
Janice, enjoy colorado and never leave such a majestic place, afterall, we have a lot of extremists on both sides and we don,t need any more.Just to let you know that the Palestinians claim that they have a documented history of 9000 nine thousand years ,that is, 5000 five thousand years befor our Patriarch Abraham put a foot on Hebron soil! how about that Janice We need to live with each other as sons of Abraham not as arch enemeies Janice. Please keep enjoying DEnver, Boulder, Vail, Aspen , and all Colorado.
"The Torah has the land deed to all Israel as given by G-d of Israel" This is 2010, Janice, and land deeds are not predicated upon historical writings. Can't believe you didn't notice this before.
The Torah has the land deed to all Israel as given by G-d of Israel. The borders are set eternally; Ismael was made 12 princes, 12 lands - go live in any one of them not Israel.
"Aside from racism, can anyone give me a reason why tear gas and stun grenades are used when Palestinians throw stones but not when Israelis throw them?" I've also asked this same question, and have come to the conclusion that Israeli settler stones when flung at the IDF must be soft!
The announcement was: " following the government's decision to include it on its list of protected Jewish holy sites. " notice the word Jewish, rather than Israeli.
so let me understand, the Palestinians are upset that Jews acknowledge their ancestors. I suppose it would be convenient if the historic connection of jews to Israel be forgotten. Then Jews will be conquerors rather than the Arabs. Note, that no one said said anything of annexing these sites to Israel, only of restoring them. what is so wrong about that?
As a Jew I am second to none in my belief that the caves are a legitimate Jewish holy site. But this declaration of the caves as an Israeli heritage site was unnecessary, argumentative, and will just embolden the wacko "settlers" at fort Kiryat Arba. As painful as the words are to hear, Israel will have to sacrifice some "sacred" principles if there is ever to be a peace.
In our bible the brothers who suffer from sibling rivalry bury their father (our Patriarchs) together..as brothers, sons of one man. The Cave in Hebron must become a place to celebrate our unity..not to cause division. Protect our heritage and theirs! Our common heritage. Not as a show of power..trying to show everyone who is "boss".
Aside from racism, can anyone give me a reason why tear gas and stun grenades are used when Palestinians throw stones but not when Israelis throw them?
Rachel's tomb, nothing but a medieval Islamic tomb of a holy man. Proof, take a look at the early photos of the site showing Islamic burials around the tomb, up to the door, on all four sides. Unfortunately, people are killed over this foolishness.
typical palestinian reaction. Give no respect to the history or historical sites of those of other religions. This should have been a non event if the palestinians had religious figures and leaders who could read history and understand religion and would urge their people to have toleration so there could be peaceful cooperation. There does not exist palestinian arab leaders who have this understanding
Thank G-d finally, there will be a force to protect our heritage from the barbarous ignorant pals who destroy everything in their path like hungry, blind, locusts. ( do they disregard Abraham as well as their own claims to the land?) They remind me of the gangs of L.A. They try, they die in vain. All that left are their dead bodies. No great loss for anyone. How they must hate themselves for being even part Jewish by Abraham.
