Seven soldiers killed in fighting on Sunday, eve of UN cease-fire

Sunday's fatalities raise the number of Israelis killed in the war to 154, 115 of them soldiers.

By Amos Harel and agencies

Seven Israel Defense Forces soldiers were killed in south Lebanon on Sunday, as troops and Hezbollah guerillas engaged in heavy fighting, hours before a United Nations cease-fire resolution was expected to go into effect.

Sunday's fatalities raise the number of Israelis killed in the war to 154, 115 of them soldiers and 39 of them civilians.

Two IDF reservists were killed and four were seriously injured when Hezbollah fired an anti-tank rocket and mortar shells at troops near Kanatra. The fatalities were identified as Sergeant Major Amitai Yaron, 44, from Zichron Yaakov and Staff Sergeant Peter Ochotzky, 23, from Lod.

In a separate incident Sunday, four soldiers were killed and 14 were hurt, two of them seriously, when an anti-tank rocket hit reserve troops near Abu Twil, north of Ayta a-Shab.

Three of the soldiers were identified as First Lieutenant (res.) Eliel Ben-Yehuda, 24, from Kfar Tavor, Sergeant Major(res.) Guy Hasson, 24, from Na'ama and First Lieutenant (res.) Zur Zarhi, 26, from Nahalal.

The IDF continued to expand its ground operation in Lebanon on Sunday, as tanks pushed past the Saluki river and reached the Kanatra region in the central section of southern Lebanon, where the army had suffered most of its casualties on Saturday.

Twenty-four IDF soldiers were killed and another 11 seriously wounded during fighting in south Lebanon on Saturday, the heaviest one-day Israeli casualty toll of the war.

    Israel tricked into war

Israel has fallen for the siren song of war, Nasrallah wanted the war from the beginning. Olmert fell for the trap and thus suffers the consequences. Provocations must always be analyzed carefully to see exactly what is the opposition wanting. It was not worth going to war over 2 captured soldiers. There were many other ways to pressure Hezbollah, many other ways to make them look bad in the eyes of the world but Israel wasn't thinking. The lebanese government is completely powerless now, the takeover by hezbollah will be complete.

dearest jewish half brothers and sisters, i can understand that theres a lot of anger and hatred amongst you and us your muslim half brothers and sisters, for the sake of our common forefather let us forgive and forget and join hands to become a good example to the rest of the world. i just wanted to say that I love you and dont hold any animosity towards you from this day onwards and before. if anythings been accomplished its just that our brothers and sisters and their children died, and thats not an accomplishment, in a war there are only losers,so lets ask our Creator for His forgiveness and lets be brothers as we actually are and as our Creator and our forefather Abraham (may peace be upon him) meant for us...once more. i love you...always

Alberto you ask since when did Hisb'Allah release a list of its dead? From the very start, they are proud of their martyrs and they have lost 62, the last I looked. They have not been hiding among the civilian population you poor deluded fools. Amazing anybody still believes that. That is why they have lost so few fighters. Israel was mostly attacking the civilians, and the only Hisb'Allah they got was in open combat, something the IDF tries to avoid since civlians at least don't shoot back!

    Hisb'Allah's casualties

There is one thing that needs to be said. The IDF keeps on claiming it has killed about 50 Hisb'Allah. Unless they are including civilian Shia, women and children in that number it is a LIE. Hisb'Allah is proud of its martyrs as everyone should know. They have not been concealing their losses, but have been posting information on each one of them from the start. At last count Hisb'Allah had lost only 62 fighters. The IDF own figures are absolutely unreliable, and even Israeli's should be smart enough to see past that propaganda. Journalists have been all over Lebanon to and they have only confirmed all the reports coming out of Lebanon of it's casualties. The real truth, taking each contry's word about it's casualties is this. Israel has killed at least 1000 civilians, and about 62, Hisb'Allah fighters. Hisb'Allah has killed about 39 civilians and 115 IDF fighters. Basically this makes Hisb'Allah the most humane army involved in conflicts at this time.

Israelis massacre of lebanese people..and destroying Lebanese infrastructure......further strengthened muslim/arabs public resolve in Hezballah...now the people of middle east believe that Hezballah is the most qualifying force to neutralize zionist agenda......Israel superficial but costly military gain is no match to what hezballah gained in the long run they proved that they are not just cheap terrorist but a formidable devoted and superbly trained fighting force and gave the Israelis public the taste of what palestinian are facing in gaza...it is high time for the Israelis to solve the middle east problem with peace instead of force before things spiral out......Israel should learn the lesson from its big brother USA that military solution will just not work..as Americans are stuck in Iraq and Afghanistan........not every place is like gaza where Israel can excercise it military power on helpless poor palestinians.

I am so sad about the loss of life on all sides of the war! I am so sad about fanaticism standing against humanism. We are all children of Avraham/Ibrahim. Why can't we live in peace? In Spain it was possible for Jews and Muslims to live in peace for several hundred years. Jews, Muslims and Christians need their own space to live freely and unharmed. Why don't people respect it? Why do people let other countries interfere that follow their own interests? But we in Europe needed much time to learn our lessons. Hopefully, people in the Middle east people will be faster than we stupid Europeans. I honour the civilians on both sides and the IDF soldiers who lost their lives. I pray to God that he helps fanatics and fundamentalists see that their brutal and inhuman behavior is not the right way!

The bombings in Argentina were attributed to Hezbollah by the Israeli intelligence, how convenient. Hezbollah operates in Lebanon as defensive force against Israeli aggression. Israel and the US have been trying to build an international case against Hezbollah as a terrorist organization because they know it is a formidable force in Lebanon. The Pro-Israeli propaganda kicked in by sticking the "terrorist" label against Hezbollah. Lebanese have the right to defend their land. And this defensive force is in Lebanon, not Argentina. And lay off the "human shield" story line. Another tactic trying to dehumanize Hezbollah. You do not realize that Hezbollah *ARE* the residents of South Lebanon. They live in these towns and villages. If Israel was courageous enough, they would not use air strikes and they would rely on face-to-face combat from day one. Instead, Israeli soldiers hide behind air strikes to save their lives.

I do feel deeply saddened by the loss of lives on both sides. This war achieved nothing apart from death, hatered and mothers crying on graveyards. The 2 IDF are still captives and Hezbo is stronger than ever. Negotiation should have been the only resort to solve this matter from day one, that would entail Returning Chabaa's farms and release of the prisoners

The world saw Israeli warplanes targeting civilians and noncombatants. The Israelis blew up ambulances and medical facilities. You destroyed economic infrastructure and slaughtered civilians fleeing the fighting. The Israelis spilled hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil into the Mediteranean in an effort to cause an environmental nightmare. The Israelis are the real terrorists in the Middle East and the world is watching your carnage in disbelief.

46 dead IDF soldiers in the last three days of fighting and over 500 rockets fell inside Israel. Now how weak is the Hizbollah? They sound even stronger than when it all started and Israel instead of targeting the Hizbollah according to the Grapes of Wrath Understanding started to bomb the civilian population in breach of that very "understanding". In the next Lebanese election we will see how politicaly "weak" the Hizbollah is. Or if maybe even they will win seats and influence.

    • 14.08.06
    • 10:45

It is amazing how the media is focusing in counting 2 things.Number of Hizbolla rockets fired into Israel and number of dead Israelis. Why no body is counting number of Israeli rockets and bombs raining on lebanese CIVILIANS. 70% of israel's casualities are soliders (legitimate targets) and only 11% of lebanon's casualities are Hizbolla fighters. Some thing wrong here. And remember, it is Israel that has the Smart bombs, air force and the technology that is supposed to help her avoid civilian targets. No one belives israel any more that hizbolla is hiding between civilians. Killing 4 UN observers by israel is the proof of Israel's random and disparete bombing. UN coordinates are so clear and obvious yet hit by the IDF.

First, Israel did not start this--Hezbollah did and Hezbollah has perpetuated great terror against not only Israel but also all Jews. I am from Argentina and they bombed AMIA (the Jewish Community Center) in 1994 and killed 85 people in 1992 Hezbollah bombed the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires and killed 29.... Hezbollah uses the civilian population around Lebanon as human shields. Israel did not wantonly go and decide to kill civilians and had they decided that tens of thousands would have been killed. Among the 1,000 or so killed in Lebanon, nobody knows how many were Hezbollah terrorists. Hey, when did Hezbollah release a list of its dead??? It is a terrible tragedy that so many have died in both countries. It is a tragedy that could have been avoided if only Lebanon had disarmed Hezbollah. Democracies don't have militias controlling various regions. As for a German word, I think schadenfreude best describes how you feel. You don't like Jews, right?

For all the hasbara about rocket threat, Hezbollah's rocket attack surprising has very low collateral damage - Out of almost 4000 rockets launched, only 41 Israeli civilians are killed, while 115 Israel soldiers died from anti-tank missiles and rockets. Compare this against the Israeli indiscriminate bombings of infrastructure and anything that moves in Lebanon, killing 880 civilians - and estimated 500+ Hezbollah fighters. I think Israel deliberately exact a high civilian toll on her enemies as the REAL DETERRENT, rather than its ability to fight the enemies soldier. Halutz and Peretz has to go...they have led Israel into a immoral wrong war, wrong target, wrong results (strengthened Hezbollah's image), wrong publicity, etc.... May there yet be peace to all!

    How many Lebanese victims?
    • Fritz
    • 14.08.06
    • 10:12

The numbers of Israels victims allways surprise me when they are reported without the victims of Israels army. Like it or not, thats "crybaby" too. This seems to be Israels biggest problem, its strong believe in its own superiority or however you want to call it. Not to mention that it is easy to look strong against a weak army, we now know. Well, the "Dolchstosslegende" is allready there, the "bad Olmert", who stopped the superarmy, but this is cheap. Israels biggest problem is that there is no real opposition, the peacemovement is only half engaged, the said yes to this idiotic adventure. Oh si tacuisses....we would still believe in Israels power. Even Gaardner is accused to be "anti-semitic", such a pattern does not work. Israel must open itself to the world aka reality, including its neighbors, not the puppets in Jordania, Egypt, maybe Turkey, but Syria and more important, like it or not, the main power in the region, Iran. "Crybaby", a selfcritical Israel would be loved by all
