Settlers to step up fight against construction freeze
West Bank settlement heads plan to rally outside Netanyahu home, exert more pressure on ministers.
By Chaim Levinson Tags: Benjamin Netanyahu Israel settlements Barack Obama Israel newsSettler leaders plan to step up their fight against a planned freeze of construction in West Bank settlements, including a sit-down protest in front of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home later this month.
The settlers plan to hold the demonstration before Netanyahu heads to New York for a United Nations General Assembly meeting, during which he will apparently meet with U.S. President Barack Obama.
Obama has exerted tremendous pressure on the prime minister to agree to a settlement freeze, which the Palestinians say is a precondition to a renewal of peace talks.
The heads of West Bank settlements decided on the protest at an emergency meeting held on Wednesday to discuss steps against the planned freeze. They also agreed to apply more pressure on ministers and Likud lawmakers to oppose the move.
"This isn't a settlement freeze but a noose on settlement. We will work in every way to continue settlement; when everything is forbidden, everything is permitted. As the Bedouin in the Negev say, 'What we can do - they won't let us build legally,'" said Herzl Bar-Ari, head of the Karnei Shomron regional council.
He added: "There won't be any more quiet, and we will take practical steps."
The head of the Yesha council of settlements, Danny Dayan, also participated in the meeting, which was held at the West Bank settlement of Karnei Shomron. He described the situation as an "emergency."
"The map of approved [construction] corresponds with the Labor party platform; where are the national camp's ministers?" Dayan asked. "The settlements in Yesha [the West Bank] are a living body that cannot be frozen. We will break the freeze and there will be construction, period."

This conflict will never end without the end of illegal Israeli settlements. Israelis don't want to freeze the settlements, this means they are rejecting the two state solution (which is not possible without the end of settlements on Palestinian lands), which means they are rejecting peace. Way to go Israel, you claim you want peace, but your actions prove otherwise.
...thank you, there are so few voices of sanity and reason coming from Israel these days.
But Dhimmedias exploite the word fight .
I wonder what the vote regarding settlement freeze would look like if Israel actually let all people under its rule vote.
Although you put forward Ibsen's statement that 'the majority is never right', I still hope for sure that your post reflects the opinion of 'the silent majority' in Israel one day soon.
Well thought out and fair, thank you!
Israel is the Jewish state established by the UN .... not the West Bank, Gaza, the Golan Heights or Jordan. Jewish settlers, enabled by the Israeli government, continue a practice of plundering Palestinians and their land in violation of the UN dictates. The Judaic tradition puts a high value on truth and justice. In the American-Judaic tradition, this resulted in the Jews having been the leaders in seeking social justice, whether in civil rights, labor unions, social welfare and health care access. The vast majority of American Jews support Obama and his commitment to human values. Have the Israeli settlers abandoned these time-honored precepts for the sake of acquiring free land at whatever human cost to the Palestinians? If so, they have surely wandered from the foundations of their religion.
Its understandable that its hard to comply with International law(s) when the state has been violating them since the 67 war. If the state was serious about it, it would have done so a long time ago. Then again, who gives a s**t what International laws says or what the entire world thinks. This is the middle east where logic, reason and human rights are just obstacles to survival.
Israel apparently didn't learn the lessons of the occupation of Sinai and Gaza, and so seems determined to waste money and build false expectations by trying to annex Arab land yet again. As Ibsen said, the majority is never right. Menachem Begin and Ariel Sharon , right wingers for sure, realized the folly and danger of trying to squat on Arab land and withdrew from the Sinai and Gaza. Bibi will do the same, or his successor will. Settlers are treif, violating Jewish law, unfairly expropriating other peoples land, and they will pay dearly in blood and future victims until they undo the tragedy they are locked into. Chaim, you are are rooting for the wrong side.
The settlements are illegal under international law, UN Decisions, and Jewish Halacha. To expropriate land thru unethical means detracts and totally annuls the supposed mitzvah of settling the land. A mitzvah cannot be based on a crime. Even Begin and Sharon realized the danger and folly of settlements not under Jewish legal and moral principles. Yamit and Gaza were abandoned rightfully. The settlements need to be frozen, disassembled, as a prelude to real negotiations and long term peace with a Palestinian state, the only hope for a moral Israel with a secure future. amen.
Enough of banana republic politics in Israel. Enough of politicians winning elections as right wing patriots and governing as Pieces Now loony tunes. Israeli voters soundly rejected the building freeze. We decimated the pro-building freeze Labor and Meretz parties. The government must respect the decision of the electorate. That is what democracy is all about. Now is the time for Israel to DEMAND our decision be obeyed.
