Settler rabbi arrested over West Bank mosque arson
Rabbi Itzik Shapira, one of the heads of a Yitzhar yeshiva, was arrested by authorities on Tuesday.
By Chaim Levinson Tags: Israel news West BankThe Shin Bet security service on Tuesday arrested the head of a West Bank religious seminary for his alleged involvement in the torching of a Palestinian mosque in the village of Yasuf last month.
The suspect, Rabbi Itzik Shapira, is one of the heads of the "Od Yosef Chai" yeshiva in the West Bank settlement of Yitzhar. He was initially questioned by West Bank police, though he was later transferred into Shin Bet custody in Petah Tikva after he refused to answer questions related to the arson.
The yeshiva is behind the "price tag" policy whereby settlers have vowed to instigate actions against Palestinians in retaliation for the government's enforcement of a construction freeze in West Bank settlements.
A number of the yeshiva's administrators have published commentaries supporting this policy. Last week, the Shin Bet arrested four others linked with the arson, two of whose remand was extended by two days on Monday afternoon.
Both suspects denied the allegations against them, and were supported during the hearing by friends who shouted "god is king," and "everyone is silent."
Three more suspects were arrested in connection with the torching, two of whom are minors.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said following the incident that Israel must rein in settlers' "brutal" actions.
"The torching of the mosque in Yasuf is a despicable crime, and the settlers are behaving with brutality," said Abbas, who called the act a violation of religious freedom.
"The settlers' unruly behavior must be stopped," Abbas added after a meeting with United Arab List-Ta'al chairman Ahmed Tibi in Amman.
Defense Minister Ehud Barak, also condemned the act as a bid to thwart the peace process with the Palestinians.
"This is an extremist act geared toward harming the government's efforts to advance the political process for the sake of Israel's future," Barak said.

a few Palestinians, you would know the reality which is that most Palestinians are very passive and accept what is happening to them, all the wile praying for deliverance. It is only a small minority of individuals that attempt to exact revenge on Israelis. I lived in Nablus for 2 years, which included the entire time of Operation Defensive Shield in April of 2002. Part of the problem is that Jews rarely have the opportunity to meet these people.
Rabbi Itzik... Pitzik, from the shtatle of Yitzhar. The purveyor of a 'price tag' policy envisioned directly from the Middle Ages. How prophetic is this... what an absolute low-life. Let everyone see, what we Jews are doing to ourselves... to our collective moral spirit. Not sure about anybody else... but this type of behavior is an absolute abomination to morality and religious scholarship.
I remember watching a documentary about how jews would turn Mosques into bars and brothels. the sad thing is that they were proud of what they did. before the europeans moved in everyone respected everyones place of worship. and they claim to be demcratic and civilized. lol shaking my head at the civilized.
Thank you Cassie for clearing that up for us. I thought it was odd that they would tear down a synagogue. good lord isn't it pathetic when fanatics like shalom try making it look like isrl is a just nation?
Show us pictures of a synagogue being bulldosed and we might just believe you. What was the reason for bulldozing it? you see you can say lots of stuff but in reality I do not believe they would bulldoze a synagogue unless it was condemned or something to that effect. bBt when pals fight for their rights you plow down their houses. in your eyes only jews have the right to self defense. I bet if the tables were turned the west would be beating down the doors of the arabs. ohhhhh wait a minute..... thats already happening...
they are not terrorists, they are freedom fighters.
Have Jews joined the ranks of violent people Now, I am convinced!
burning a mosque is contemptable,Pals call worse acts like massacres "popular uprising and inalienable rights.Muslims have a neck of driving people crazy:See: http://www.hrw.org/en/news/2010/01/22/nigeria-protect-survivors-fully-investigate-massacre-reports

Unless you're Palestinian you get treated that way. The only other difference is that one way or another, he'll talk.
Anyone who does not condemn this crime,or who tries to make excuses is not only a criminal but is ultimately acting against this country's future and any hope of peace. The fifth amendment doesn't exist here!Or it shouldn't They must be magnanimous and put the majority before themselves, but just as you cannot reason with suicide bombers.....
The israeli government is responsible for the arson. By failing to protect the Jews against the Arabs, the Jews are begining to defend them selves. Barack should be jailed, while the Rabbi should be let free. Does anyone else feel this way?
After he serves his 3 days of house arrest, he can go back to freely preaching his hatred and extremism in his illegal settlement.
Because these people are allowed free reign to preach their hatred in extremist settlements all over the West Bank and Israel does nothing about it (until of course they carry out a highly-publicized attack such as burning a mosque, only then does Israel act). Had this mosque arson not been so widely-publicized in the international news, Israel would have never lifted a finger against this extremist "Rabbi" and his followers. Israel gives funding and support to these extremist settlements--thus Israel is just as liable for the mosque arson as this Rabbi is.
Ok you right wingers usually call for heads to roll when its non-jew using swastikas in racial hate crimes. What will you say if these people are found guilty? Do you approve of the swastika being used by jews in a non-jewish house of worship?
but wouldn't you say that if burning a mosque is a 'despicable crime', then destroying Joseph's tomb and lynching the person sheltering in it is as despicable, if not more so?
is very similar to the way Muslims have been treated by the U.S.A., your best friends.
he who can not respect othes, has no selfrespect and no dignity. they are our worst enemies
#8 -Shalom It was reported as being a cargo container, which they said they used as a Synagogue.

... but not with a settler rabbi... who will soon enjoy a delegation of religious shtadlanim on a solidarity visit, demanding instant pardon...
What is Israel thinking about when it encourages fanatics to live amongst the Arab population of the West Bank? It is like sending a paedophile to work at a kindergarten. The Israeli state is responsible through it's reckless policies.
"This is an extremist act geared toward harming the government's efforts to advance the political process for the sake of Israel's future," Barak said."Barak. Granting university status on an illegal building in Occupuied territory is not harming the governments efforts to advance the paece orocess---right. Moot point really ---theer is no desire for a just peace in Israel---none--nevr has/is not and never will be.
... after learning what the rabbis goaded during Caste-lead, anything is possible...
They have no evidence so let's turn him over to the Shin Beit and maybe they can contrive something against him. They brought him in for questioning yesterday. THe didn't talk, as is his right. They have nothing on him but they can't let him just go. So let's arrest him, tell the judge that they have evidence but cannot tell the court because it is too sensitive a situation, and then hold him for an indefinite period of time. That's the way they operate in Israel.
These Jewish imams err rabbis are a major source of Jewish radicalism and extremism...yet the State of Israel looks the other way from the hatred they preach and practice.
In a little article in one of the papers it was noted that our fearless leaders sent in their goons to bulldoze a synagogue yesterday. Maybe they too should be hanged high or is that only for desecrators of mosques?
First it was a poor Kahane orphan, then it was a whole bunchof kids from Yitzhar, and now Rabbi Itzik Shapira. The police are shooting blanks in the dark and many innocent people are paying for it. Or they're just harassing people for no reason. I'm personally not a big fan of Od Yosef Chai, but it's clear harassment.
MEHARSAIKH UMAKHRIVAICH MTMMECH YATZAU, or (YOUR DEMOLISHERS AND YOUR DESTROYER CAME OUT FROM TOU) WHY DONT WE EVACUATE THIS NEED OF SERPANTS? THEY ARE OUR RUIN AND WE'LL HAVE OUSELVES TO BLAME
Calling for hanging him before even a trial? Yet objecting when terrorists are killed while resisting arrest?
Why doesn't the Knesset make the "Price Tag" settler policy a special hate crime with intensified penalties? It is good that the present government prosecutes "price tag" actions, but when "A number of the yeshiva's administrators have published commentaries supporting this policy" it's time for a moral statement that would have the force of law to indicate that these Yeshiva administrators operate at the same margins of society as the Ku Klux Klan.
The moment we see Israelis acting like Jihadists with "God is great" we must intervene immediately.
maybe even an ankle bracelet.
Bring this rogue "man of god" to justice. Attacks on religious institutions and sacred sites are totally unacceptable (unless of course the "religious site" is doubling as a command center or arms depot).
