Saudi Arabia: Efforts to rid Mideast of nukes must apply to Israel

Saudis cool to idea of Iran sanctions; Clinton in Mideast as part of bid to shore up effort against Iran.

Amid growing Western efforts to impose harsher measures against Iran over its contentious nuclear, Saudi Arabia expressed doubts on Monday about the usefulness of imposing more sanctions.

Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal told a news conference alongside U.S. Secretary in Riyadh that the threat posed by Iran's nuclear ambitions demands a more immediate solution than sanctions.

The Saudi minister also said efforts supported by the U.S. to rid the Middle East of nuclear weapons must apply to Israel.

"Sanctions are a long-term solution," the Saudi minister said. "But we see the issue in the shorter term. ... We need immediate resolution rather than gradual resolution."

He didn't identify a preferred short-term resolution.

World powers denied on Monday an Iranian report that they had offered a fresh proposal for a swap on nuclear fuel, saying "the door remains open" for Tehran to accept a proposal offered in the autumn.

Before leaving Qatar for Riyadh earlier Monday, Clinton said that the United States believes Iran's Revolutionary Guards are driving the country towards military dictatorship and should be targeted in any new UN sanctions,.

Clinton denied the United States planned to attack Iran and said Washington wanted dialogue with Tehran but could not "stand idly by" while Iran pursued a suspected nuclear weapons program.

obviously you missed the point, which is quite simple. Those that have them, keep them...those that dont yet have them, should be thwarted from getting them....THIS will make our collective world safer..israel has RESPONSIBLY had nukes for near 50 yrs, and if ANY COUNTRY has had a real reason to have used them at some point, it's israel...BUT THEY DONT AND HAVEN'T...iran on the other hand cannot be trusted, supports terrorism all over the world, brutalizes it's own people on a daily basis... anyone who says iran deserves to have one too is just a moron. Posters Ice and oz are just 2 jew hating losers...I know, you hate it that israel is so strong... awwwww.....poor l'il ice and oz...I feel for you...really...your pathetic and you come on here to prove it. HA!

surely NOT to the Elite who can afford everything. The poors will suffer and will hate foreigners and praise their governments. Israel will be hated most as it is PM Netanyahu and members of his team that keep on asking everybody to impose stiffer sanctions. USA will be next of the "HATED" list. Then people like me , American, who will not be able to travel freely without looking on my shoulder, who is following me .

So if it is fine for Israel to have nukes, then it is also fine for Iran to have nukes (if they so choose)

One frequently discounted possibility is that Iran must have the nuclear capability BECAUSE Israel has it now. Their having nuclear capability will mean MAD with Israel and protect them.

he seems to be saying, bomb iran...israeli nukes are a whole other story...I MEAN, if i were israel, I would NEVER give them up...NEVER. NOT FOR ANYONE FOR ANY REASON. just wont happen. Besides, if israel gives them up, china has to, russia has to, the US has to, pakistan, india. Do you think any one of these will give them up? the only thing we CAN do is prevent others from developing them...and THAT

...to destroy Israel through terror. Israel must keep, and perhaps use, the nuclear option to make "never again" real rather than a hop that jew killers will change their ways. The saudis are a major cause of world terror. Israel should capture the Saudi oilfields which are anyway run by foreigners.

Israel's nukes is not open for discussion.

Tactical nukes are needed as a defense against so many hostile ' neighbors' that surround the nation and are intent on its destruction. Make no mistake they will be used if there are no other options. When the U.S., Russia and China as well as many European countries give up their nukes then perhaps Israel will consider the same. Israel has never admitted to possessing nukes and has never threatened another country with them as has Iran. Some of the weapons Israel is working on now are much worse than nukes !

Somebody should solve it "in the short-term". Saudi Arabia offers words, and plays anti-Israel music just in case, for Arab and Muslim consumption. Ah, what a wonderful, constructive and transparent ally the West has in Saudi Arabia.

It's so foolish to think Iran can't have nukes, but Israel can 100s. The Saudis are no friends of Iran, but even they know that Israel is the big gorilla in the room with nukes pointed at every Arab capital.
