Sarkozy: Israel strike against Iran would be disastrous

U.S. official: China agrees to support new Iran sanctions; Russia: Sanctions shouldn't harms Iranians.

By Haaretz Service and Reuters Tags: Barack Obama Nicolas Sarkozy Iran nuclear Israel news

French President Nicolas Sarkozy told the American news network CBS on Tuesday that an Israeli military attack against Iran would be "disastrous" and that Israel must understand that "we are determined to ensure its security."

Hours before U.S. President Barack Obama opened a landmark summit of 47 nations on nuclear security in Washington, Sarkozy told CBS's Katie Couric that "I would not want the world to wake up to a conflict between Israel and Iran, quite simply because the international community has been incapable of acting."

"I consider the fact that Iran should get its hands on a nuclear weapon - a military nuclear weapon...dangerous and unacceptable. Unacceptable, quite simply. President Obama has wanted to stretch out his hand in order to show clearly to the Iranians that it was not they who were the target, but their leadership," Sarkozy went on to say.

When asked whether he thought sanctions could really deter Iran from developing nuclear weapons, the French president replied that "I believe in the effect of sanctions, because I've been very impressed by the courage of the Iranian people. Those young kids, those women who went down into the streets of Tehran and major Iranian cities. What a fantastic example of courage they gave us...We can't afford to be less courageous than they were."

Following talks between Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao, Obama's top China adviser Jeffery Bader said that China shares U.S. concerns over Iran's nuclear program, and that the country had agreed to direct its officials to work on a United Nations sanctions resolution against Tehran.

Bader added that Obama and Hu, meeting on the sidelines of the nuclear security summit, talked at length about Iran and discussed nuclear non-proliferation.

Obama stressed to Hu the need to act urgently against Iran's nuclear program, and Hu agreed that Beijing would help craft a UN resolution, Bader said.

The White House had hoped the one-on-one meeting would help determine whether China was serious about moving forward with the United States, Britain, France, Russia and Germany in forging a new round of UN sanctions on Iran.

"The resolution will make clear to Iran the cost of pursuing a nuclear program that violates Iran's obligations and responsibilities," Bader told reporters after the meeting. "The Chinese are actively at the table in New York."

Bader said the two presidents agreed that their delegations should work on a Security Council resolution on a new round of Iran sanctions "and that's what we're doing."

Obama deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said the United States still expects a UN resolution by this spring.

Bader said Obama's meeting with Hu "was a sign of international unity" on Iran. Western powers want to deter Iran from what they see as a drive to develop nuclear weapons, while Tehran insists its program has only peaceful, civilian purposes.

China, which holds veto power in the Security Council, had recently shown an increased willingness to pressure Iran while signaling it remained reluctant to take some of the toughest measures proposed by Washington and other Western powers.

Iran on Tuesday expressed doubts that China will back the U.S. and European drive for renewed sanctions.

Following the meeting, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said that President Hu had told Obama in "positive and constructive" talks on Monday that Beijing wanted to resolve bilateral economic friction through consultations.

China and the United States also "share the same overall goal on the Iranian nuclear issue," Ma said in a written statement after the two leaders met on the sidelines of a nuclear security summit in Washington. Ma provided no details on the talks and repeated China's standard call for "dialogue and negotiations" with Iran.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Obama made no mention of his talks with Hu but said he expects the 47-nation summit to make progress toward locking down loose nuclear material.

"It's impressive. I think it's an indication of how deeply concerned everybody should be with the possibilities of nuclear traffic, and I think at the end of this we're going to see some very specific, concrete actions that each nation is that will make the world a little bit safer," Obama said.

Speaking to ABC's Good Morning America on Monday, Russian President Dimitry Medvedev said that while he supported sanctions on Iran's nuclear program he felt those sanctions should not harm the Iranian people.

On the subject of imitating new sanctions against Iran geared at forcing it to abandon its nuclear program, the Russian president said that "it's not whether it's a good thought or bad thought, I'm talking about something else."

"The sanctions is a tricky thing which works seldomly. You yourself were busy with politics, and you know that sanctions is not without conditions," Medvedev said, adding but sometimes you have to do that."

"What kind of sanctions? We have spoken about that with President Obama yesterday. Sanctions should be effective and they should be smart," the Russian President said.

"They should not lead to humanitarian catastrophe, and the whole Iranian community would start to hate the whole world. And we're worried that there are a significant number of people which have radical opinions. Do we want that radical thought to be sent to the whole world?," Medvedev said.

However, the Russian president did not rule sanctions altogether, saying that they "should be smart."

"They should force or obligate the Iranian leadership to think about what's next. What could sanctions be? It could be trade, arms trade. It could be other sanctions," Medvedev said, adding that "sanctions should let the country understand that all who impose sanctions have the same opinion."

Medvedev said that any new sanctions "should not be paralyzing. They should not cause suffering. Aren't we in the 21st century? That's why if we're going to develop our cooperation in this direction we have a chance to succeed. Better would be to go without sanctions and achieve things politically.

Earlier Monday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad condemned Obama's nuclear summit, calling it humiliating to humanity.

Iran has been promised nuclear fuel for over 30 years now. Despite being a 10-percent shareholder and hence entitled to the European Gaseous Diffusion Uranium Enrichment Consortium (Eurodif)?s output, Iran has never received enriched uranium from France. Tehran and Paris have also signed a deal, under which France is obliged to deliver 50 tons of uranium hexafluoride to Iran ? another obligation France has failed to meet.

'I appreciate your love of, and belief in, Israel, but please get used to the fact that Israel can`t do miraculous miracles. It only proved that it can do the simpler kind...' Simpler miracles Israel does frequently. Miraculous miracles take a little longer, and with some assistance from the Chap Upstairs. More seriously, my friend: I recognise that Israel needs friends on Earth, and well as in Heaven; and that the Netanyahu government seems to have forgotten this basic foreign policy precept. But regardless: Israel, in the final analysis, must be able and willing to defend itself, with or without help - and that includes the ability and willingness to launch a pre-emptive strike when an enemy becomes an existential threat. I don't see any other way, frankly, out of the Iran situation - unless regime change happens, and the new masters of Tehran prove far less bent on regional hegemony and Judenreinheit. But we agree on one thing: believe in Him, pray for peace. MV

Israel has called "wolf" so many times that they have lost credibility. Its unilateral actions have been an embarressment to its allies as well as an endangerment to achieving Middle East peace. Israel needs to join with the USA, Russia, the EU and China in a reasonable, thought-out approach to Iran. The super powers have world peace at stake rather than the limited self-interest of one nation engrossed by confiscation of someone else's land.

How Israel should deal with Iran
    • Logios
    • 13.04.10
    • 20:58

Israel has no realistic military option against Iran (with US dispproval), other than a nuclear strike which is unacceptable before the Iranians have a nuclear weapon and intend to use it. The distance to Iranian nuclear installation is bigger than what the roundtrip range of the most capable Israeli plane can do without midair refueling. (Where?) The installations are also well dispersed and some locations may be unknown. Here is a completely different alternative for Israel: 1. Make peace with Syria. The Syrians offered it to Sharon (following Hafez Assad moves). Syria at peace will kill Hizballah, and get Meshal and other Palestinian rejectionists out of there. Cost: The Golan. 2. Make peace with Lebanon. Papa Assad promised this will follow, and Syria can deliver. No more arms supply to Hizballah. 3. Make peace with the Palestinians. Abbas wants it, and Fayyad is establishing a state whether Israel likes it or not. Cost: Practically all the Territories except for some exchanges. 4. Make peace with all Arab states, as per the Saudi plan. 5. Iran, having been pushed out of the region, looks elsewhere to cause trouble. Iraq and Afghanistan will keep them and the US busy. Israel is no longer of central interest to them.

    The Syrian option
    • Logios
    • 13.04.10
    • 20:58

"The deeper the connection among Hezbollah, Syria, Iran and Hamas, the more we need to worry," - IDF One would think such an observation, and others over the years, would lead to one simple conclusion: Get Syria out of Iran`s orbit and make peace with it. This will bring an end to military Hizballah and also bring peace with Lebanon. Problem: There is a price to be paid . Syria`s close alliance with Iran is not natural. Syria is secular, Iran fundamentalist. Syria is an Arab state, Iran Persian (long time nofriends). Syria is mostly Sunni, Iran Shiite. Syria used to be friendly to the US, since they joined the coalition against Saddam in the 1991 war. Jim Baker visited Syria 15 times. After the 9-11 attacks Syria helped the US in hunting al-Qaida, even to the extent of torturing some on behalf of the CIA. But Syria continued to support Hizballah as pressure against Israel. But Bush had larger (and confused) ambitions, so he made Hizballah one of his targets. Syria, as their supporter, became "evil", and Israel can now use this excuse to refrain from dealing with Syria and maintained its hold over the Golan. There is a price to the Israeli reluctance to talk peace with Syria. Since 1973, when Egypt got out of the Israeli-Arab conflict, Syria tried to cause trouble only indirectly, so as not to be attacked itself. Israel, though had to go to war twice already, in Lebanon, in 1982 and 2006. Another one is expected. All these were indirect Syrian wars. But now, Syria is willing to repeat the Hizballah strategy and engage Israel in its own war, perhaps as part of a larger war led by Iran.

Just because Israel is paranoiac and wants to divert attention from its oppression of the Palestinians and human rights violations, doesn?t mean we have to support their quest for bombing a country that has done nothing wrong to them or anyone else. It is not Iran that?s the aggressive country in the ME. It is not Iran that has nuclear weapons in the ME. It is not Iran that should be boycotted but Israel. Just because some group has pointed out the obvious powerful israel- and its supporters have - to put pressure on the rest of the world to go along with THEIR designs

Jerusalem authorities plan to give the green light to build a new synagogue and school in east Jerusalem on land seized from Palestinians, which can only mean one thing, Netanyahu did not back down from threats from Obama and Obama's threats were no more than an act and a lie, typical of an American politician who does not have the guts to take action instead of spreading B.S. out of his mouth. If Israel goes go ahead and builds the synagogue and school in east Jerusalem it will for sure damage any chance for peace and create a big disaster on Israel. Obama, its time you became a man and stopped being a coward. For once lets see an American president stand up to the Israeli government with actions rather than with words.

Even if Iran was to stop its program tomorrow, it is a matter of time before another regional Muslim country will seek the same. We already know Jordan, Egypt and also Syria are seeking nuclear civilian programs. We also know the distance between civilian and military is minute. So what is Israel going to do? Bomb any country who seeks such program? The answer is open the entire region to strickt international inspections and require all countries to sign the NPT. That would of course require Israel to dissolve Dimona but as result will be much more secure.

If you think a war can get achieve anything for Israel then you've got it badly rong. Iran is not Iraq or north Korea. The annual report by the UN on industrial development ranks it as the 16th largest industry in the world, its got some of the largest reserves of natural resources and an increasingly educated population. Excluding it from international forums and discussions is like wishing for a problem to disappear by not thinking about it, its silly. Iran might even be the tipping point, forcing Israel to seek integration into the middle east and stronger ties to the countries there rather than regarding itself as an outsider and a western embassy in the region. That is if the country wants to see itself still exist there in the foreseeable future.

Sarkozy statement that the west will protect Israel is as empty as the French and British promises to protect Checoslovakia in 1938, The promises were empty then and their promises are less then empty now. Iran will not attack Israel, they know an attack on Israel means Irans destruction by Israeli nukes. Iran will take controll of Middle East nations and oil productions thus controlling the Western economies, by raising oil prices to $200/ barrel result, the western economies will be ruined. Iran controlls the world without firing a shot. Iran is not suicidal, very calculating and outsmarting the west on every turn. We will NEVER forgive you for this. Just remember one thing: Be kind to people on your way up, because you may need them on your way down. The difference between Iranian people and Arab people is that the Iranian people do not hate the Israeli people, but the Arabs do, and it is them who support the destruction of Israel, not us! Our government does not represent the people, yet Israel releases its frustration upon the people.

"I would not want the world to wake up to a conflict between Israel and Iran, quite simply because the international community has been incapable of acting." All the rest can, but Israel knows where their help comes from. Many say Israel cannot depend on History they need to start depending on their capability their horses. If there is a true tutor in the world He resides in Israel New Jerusalem. Iran is doing their duty as a deterrent plus they cannot stop. Can one stop decomposition of a dead body. Israel need to connect and stop being dead as the dead attract flies and decomposing elements. The prophet Habakkuk in the bible chapter 1 talks about those who depend on Horses and fishing nets but Israel does not belong there unless if they chose to. When biblical Peter the Jew focused his eyes on Christ He walked on the water and so should Israel. LORD, the kings of the world have gathered as it is written -- open our eyes to understand the times and be wise.

The population of Iran is more than 80 million. Two thirds of Iranians are under 30, so they will probably be 100 million in 2050. They are well educated. They are a proud and cohesive nation whose civilization and empire predates ours by millenia....IF ATTACKED THEY FIGHT AND FIGHT AND FIGHT. They area modern industrialized nation. They have oil reserves to rival those of Saudi Arabia or Iraq and they intend to be one of the major world suppliers of nuclear fuel from now on. The US, the Middle East & the rest of the world must change their mind set. Iran is a major world player, and deserves far more respect than she gets....... PS. President Sarkozy speaks quite eloquently. Especially, when he acknowledges the courage of the Iranian youth. Sanctions may not intimidate the Clerics of Tehran... but one thing it will accomplish. To isolate Iran from the international community... on a scale like never before. This will effect Tehran's economic bottom line. With China and Russia on board, the Iranian military sector will be effectively scrutinized and curtailed. Maybe to the point of deterrence... and certainly more so then an demoniac military strike.

The war in Iraq was rather initiated for Saudi-Arabia in order to spread Wahabism in the region, and to boost its oil sales, which Iraq dominated before the 1991 Gulf war. Saudi-Arabia is a much more important "friend" to the U.S.A than Israel is. Even pr. Obama bowed deep down before the Saudi king! Remember. Quite a telling gesture, don*t you think?

Too little, too late. The third world,is no longer the Third World. It is catching up to the West. The Iranian people are already feeling the effects of sanctions and that is why they are rebelling. They know they are isolated, yet at the same time, are proud that they are every bit as capable as the West. Except that it has now become a liability for them. Still, they will continue regardless, and still it will be passed on to the poorest of the poor. Is that not the rule, the law of the jungle. The rich get richer and more powerful, ie., Revolutionary Guard and clergy, and the people have no choice other than to get thrown in jail, and it's completely downhill after that. This is what we have seen.

That is it, nothing more. Nobody can secure Israels security. Only Israel. Disastrous as it may sound, Israel will not relent. For all options are on the table. World leaders are feeling the heat. Then again, they are not targeted, that is for the moment. The fact is, all seem to concur, that Israel is indeed preparing a strike. Not that one should agree. For the people of Iran deserve better. Contentious and dangerous has the situation become. A strike on Iran's Regime, that is the military facilities and certain nuclear enrichment plants may well rally the opposition to the Regime. That is the question. Somehow, if the collateral damage is vast, it may well turn the Regime against its own people in a more brutal manner, yet one could well surmise that if the RG and the Regime are broken, then the people may well be liberated. For, no matter what many write, this recent uprising by the brave and courageous people of Iran has been squashed similar to a pesky mosquito. G·day.

Espescially since netanyahu made stopping the Iranians the essence of his term as PM. And if he comes into political trouble with his coalition partners over WB / Gaza, he might well be tempted to strike Natanz and maybe some other places, just to be not impotent in the voter's eye. When the threat is real, nationalism can do wonders, and Ahmadinejad knows it. If Iran's economy keeps plummeting and Ahmadinejad still would not give it up, a patriotic war against Zionists could be his best friend. BTW, the Soviet leadership always blamed the international capitalism for deficit of anything (consumer goods, food, housing) - one could not have an army strong enough to deter imperialists, and maintain the high living standard at the same time, so one must put one's priorities right, and survival comes first.

There is no possibility of using a military strike against Iran to prevent the development of a nuclear capability. There are many sites that are widely dispersed over great distances. Little concrete information is known about the nuclear program itself, such an intelligence failure was made clear by the WMD fiasco in Iraq! Time to accept the idea of a nuclear Iran and prepare a policy to deal with it rather than futile talk about "action" to prevent a nuclear Iran. Face the facts and respond, end the self-delusion that a nuclear Iran can be stopped.

NO Iran's march towards nuclear weapons coincides with a GFC and a superpower led by an appeaser who is pulling out of 3 theatres of war as quickly as he can. In the absence of any other action (and there will be no other action) any sanctions are better than no sanctions at all. One can only hope the average Iranian starts to question why the entire world is always against them.

The South Korean government keeps insisting, a bit too much perhaps, about how its growing nuclear power program is so very very peaceful. In the world of international power politics, this is it's way of reminding the Chinese patrons of North Korea that many of China's neighbors have the ability to deploy nuclear weapons much faster and better than Iran or North Korea. If China doesn't get serious about getting on the non-proliferation bandwagon, it may find itself surrounded by nations (South Korea, Japan, TAIWAN????) with a lot better nuclear weapons capability than either of the two surviving members of the Axis of Evil.

Better to talk, talk than war, war. Any attack on Iran will only delay their program by two years or so and encourage weaponisation. More than 1/2 of Iran's population is under 30yrs and unemployment is 20%. Ahmadinerjad needs Iran to feel threatened to stay in power. The next step is to utilise existing UN sanctions that allow for the interception and searching of ships in the Persian Gulf. Iran's navy and airforce are weak and the strategic oil reserves of most OECD members mean that Iran would come off second best in any such confrontation. There continues to be vast rhemes of strategic research done on this possibility.
