Rightist MK blasts 'racist' Obama demands on East Jerusalem
Danny Danon lashes out at U.S. President in groundbreaking ceremony for new housing complex in E. Jerusalem.
By Nir Hasson and The Associated Press Tags: Israel news East JerusalemMK Danny Danon lashed out at U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday, as the lawmaker participated in groundbreaking ceremony for a new housing complex for Jews in east Jerusalem.
"President Obama should not interfere with the rights of the Jewish people to live in Jerusalem," said Danon. "This ... is a racist demand, saying that Jews cannot live in Jerusalem, only Arabs."
The ceremony kicked off construction of 124 new apartments in a Jewish housing complex called Nof Zion, or View of Zion, near the Arab neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber.
Danon added: "Our duty is to the nation that chose to deepen the settlement across Judea and Samaria, and of course Jerusalem. We will fulfill that duty, even at the cost of ignoring Obama and his advisors."
The groundbreaking came a day after Israel defied American, European and Palestinian demands to stop settlement activity by announcing it will press forward with construction of 900 apartments in another Jewish area in east Jerusalem.
The entire complex, expected to be complete in 2015, will contain a synagogue, a community center, a luxury hotel and 400 apartments, priced at between $371,000 to $690,000, said Rinat Sylvester, head of marketing for the complex.
At the ceremony, New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind said Obama's call to stop Jewish settlement amounted to segregation.

Obama's Mideast efforts might be flawed, but he is neither a racist nor an anti-semite. It would be encouraging to hear an Israeli politician challenge Obama intelligently. Offensive name-calling achieves nothing.
I'd like to buy one of these apartments too and be your neighbor. oh, I forgot. I'm not a Jew so I'm barred from buying.
I,believe, regardles what our president says,Israel has the right to build settlements wherever rhey wish,King David conquered the city.way back 4 thousand years ago,I,feel the radicals,in gaza and the west bank, and a big chunk of jordan belong to Israel, some people should check history, and the old testament,God gave this land to Israel,so be careful the title to the land, are in the hands of the Creator forever.
Tell me, Israel, how's that new American president working out for you?
For years the Israeli tail has been wagging the American dog. Now it is biting the hand that feeds it.
"What was Obama thinking?" (x-ray) The answer is quite simple. What US President Obama is most apparently thinking is that no UN state member, even not a Jewish one, and certainly not one dependent for its survival on US support, should be left free to blatantly flout international law. Or is that an answer not simple enough to be within your feeble grasp?
Jerusalem is the capital of the jewish state and must remain undivided. he said that.
To divert your attention from what he's doing he pulls another situation out of the hat Health Care, Economy,Unemployment, Iran, Iraq, he's only diverting attention from those sore points and re-directing it at Israel
Danon is saying preventing Jews from taking homes in East Jerusalem is racist. One, a Jewish person can't go to New York or California and take someone's home and then say the person is racist for not giving up their home. East Jerusalem is not recognized as part of Israel. Christian and Muslims are there. Why is Israel so free to ignore international law? Why do our tax payer dollars have to go there? I would rather send it to grateful folks in Malawi or Mozambique or starving people somewhere rather than to a country that ethnic cleanses and then claims those who don't agree with their ethnic cleansing is racist. It would be like white South Africans saying people who opposed them were racist against Afrikanners? Obviously, Danon has lost his moral compass, if he ever had one.
A prime example of those that eat up Israeli propaganda and are unquestioning supporters! And calls Obama a racist.......you have come along way Israel. With supporters like him do you not see ANY deficiencies in your distorted propaganda, occupation and the racists it attracts? PEACE EVER?
A scandalous accusation since this is in no way a racial issue. It is however an honest attempt to help Israel and the Palestinians sit down and figure out how to solve the real issues of two states for two peoples. Believe me he has much better ways of spending his time as President of the US in 2010 in the middle of a severe financial crisis, a universal healthcare plan being debated, and wars, prisoners, and all the rest of his campaign promises. Netanyahu should stop wasting everyone's time by just saying what is clear - he is against peace on any reasonable terms. Then Obama can check it off his to-do list.
by combining Israel and the Palestinian territories into one state, giving every Jews and Arabs equal civil rights. Discrimination base on race, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, age, and religion is not allow. Each citizen is entitle to vote, on a one person, one vote basis. .... Hey, that sounds like the United States of America, Israel's closest ally.
Oh yeah Obama is racist. How dare he call for a halt to state and private construction of housing that has a Jews Only policy. That is so racist! Oh wait. Maybe he remembers a time in america when signs everywhere said Whites Only. No Blacks allowed. I feel so sorry for the po' jews suffering such discrimination. Hey, save me one of those $400,000 apartments. Do I qualify for one? No, I am not jewish.
Hivkind speaks for Orthodox in Brooklyn, not for the majority of Jews in the U.S. or even in the New York area. The majority of Jews in the U.S. agree with Obama. The more the right wing calls Obama racisit, the more out of touch with reality they look.
Firstly, Jews are a people not a race. Like any other people, Jews should live wherever they want in the world, so long as it lawful. This is the case! It is also true within Israel. The status of East Jerusalem as a part of Israel is the actual issue. The annexation itself is considered illegal & void by everyone except Israel. It's not about whether Jews, per se, can live in East Jerusalem. Its about whether East Jerusalem is a part of Israel so that the settling of Israelis there (Jewish or otherwise) is not illegal. If Canada illegally annexed Alaska, & Canadians started "settling", everyone rightly should protest against it. It would not be "racist" (I use the same word) to call on them to stop moving in. Opposition isnt because they're Canadians. It's because their "settlement" there is illegal if they go their as if Alaska were a part of Canada. If they migrate there in its status as part of the US, there's no problem. It's lawful. Then opposition could be labelled "racist".
Israel to stop building in occupied areas , building for "Jews only" neighborhoods on confiscated land???? The Chutzpah....
Those apartments look reasonably priced.Think I'll look into buying one. THREE CHEERS FOR ISRAEL!!!
The settlement and occupation of East Jerusalem has to stop! This land belongs to the Palestinians and any new construction project should hence be approved by the Palestinian private land owners or the Palestinian Authority. It is a shame how the Israeli government and institutions are appropriating land which does not belong to them. If the Israeli people want peace they have to dismantle all settlements which were built behind the 67 borders, have apologize for the years of occupation and humiliation caused to the Palestinians and have to compensate the Palestinians for the suffering they caused.
The demand that Jews should not live somewhere is indeed racist. What was Obama thinking?
Dannon's clearly living in a little world of his own. Israel can't afford to ignore the US or the EU. The US can dilute it's support for Israel - which would have a massive impact on Israel's military capability, not to mention economically too. The EU, as Israel's largest trading partner, is also difficult to ignore. If Israel does decide to literally plough on with these new buildings - the next thing is for the US to cut it's military aid, and for the EU to revoke it's free trade agreement. Then we'll see how long Mr Danon continues with his attitude....
Why should the Israeli leaders be surprised by Obamas racist views on Jerusalem? He shows many racist views in his own cauntry. His long association with the racist Rev. Right and many others. His calling the police stupid when they arrested a black professor who was intent on creatin a racial incident. Etc
Using words like segregation and racism, which are absolutely not germane to the present situation is ugly. But if it truly reflects the distortions in the thinking of those who have, for example, even forgotten that there is an Arab and a Jewish Jerusalem ( even if 70 sq. km were renamed in the annexation), well, Israel will sink ever more deeply into the babbling monologue that makes it a pariah state.
