Right-wing MKs lambaste PM for accepting Gaza cease-fire deal
MK Shalom: Truce is imaginary, just gives Hamas time to reorganize; MK Steinitz: Israel missing golden opportunity.
By Gideon Alon and Haaretz CorrespondentThe right-wing parties strongly attacked Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday for accepting a cease-fire agreement with the Palestinian Authority, and warned that the militant organizations would take advantage of this hiatus to grow stronger in advance of a renewal of violent actions against Israel.
MK Silvan Shalom (Likud) said that "the cease-fire reminds me of [UN] Resolution 1701. We are playing make believe. The cease-fire is imaginary. It will give the Hamas time to get reorganized."
MK Yuval Steinitz (Likud) called on the government to rescind its agreement to a cease-fire, saying: "Israel is missing a golden opportunity to carry out a Defensive Shield 2 [broad ground offensive] in the Gaza Strip, and is in essence enabling the creation of a threat, Hezbollah-style, in the south of the country."
MK Zevulun Orlev (National Religious Party) said that the Palestinians' actions show that a cease-fire exists only between launches of Qassam rockets. He agreed with Steinitz that Israel will not be able to avoid embarking on a major military operation in the Strip.
MK Aryeh Eldad (National Union-NRP) said that the prime minister and Defense Minister Amir Peretz did not have an "accident" during the summer - referring to the failures of the war in Lebanon - rather, "they are simply serial blunderers."
"Only the reoccupation of the Gaza Strip and the eradication of the terrorist infrastructure will bring about calm," declared MK Benny Elon (National Union).

The Israeli public has only itself to blame. Not only did they elect Olmert and the other nincompoops, but Olmert would not have given his surrender speech if he did not think it would fly politically. Obviously, Hamas will use the Hezbollah template, and build up like crazy. As for Israel, with the idiots running the government and the military, God only knows.
For Hamas, a cease-fire only means a quiet time to prepare for more terrorist attacks against Israel and Israelis. Yuval Steinitz and Zevulun Orlev are right: a major military operation in Gaza will be necessary in future. Until the terrorists disarm, the next Qassam rocket is only a few days away. What is Olmert thinking? IS he thinking?
How sad. The right may have to give up its hope of driving the Palestinians out and absorbing the territories, just to save the lives and future of Israel`s children.
For all that have posted wanting to kill more Palestinians, I ask a simple question - exactly how many dead Palestinians will ensure a peaceful future for Israel? From what I can see, killing and starving millions of people has made Israel's future more questionable by the day not better. How long can Israel sustain a war against Palestinians before Israel loses all support and the Palestinians gain more deadly support? the right-wing MKs are flat out wrong and morally bankrupt.
Dear Timothy, May I assume you are Christian? I understand that Christian belief posits turning the other cheek (whether any Christian government actually does so is another matter), and I respect any Christian's right to believe that. Israel is a country mostly of Jews, and the Jewish way is not to turn the other cheek, but rather to rise up and kill the enemy who tries to kill us. That is what we must do. Hopefully this is what (what passes for) our "leadership" will finally have the brains and the guts to do.
Both Shalom and Steinitz have both short memories and as usual ''chutzpah''. having been in power these past years, have they stopped Kassam's with their policy. They might well be correct Hamas will use the cease fire to its advantage, so will I hope Israel. The only small chance of any real truce or peace, is in addition to military power, some original political thinking, its obvious this won't come from these two gentelman.
The only explanation for the decision to allow Hamas cease-fire time to strengthen their defenses is that Iran is paying Olmert/Peretz to destroy Israel. Both will take all the Iranian oil money they can get, retire rich, and escape Israel to live in luxury in another country during their retirement years. Of course, Israelis bought into the Oslo Psychosis, gave away Gaza, and elected Kadima. Maybe we deserve what we get.
Vittorio - if you're looking for replacements who will follow the present failed policy, the dead-end street of addressing all problems with violence you'll find plenty of candidates. Duds are ten a penny. You should be looking for men of vision and magnanimity, who'll recognise clear failure and try new approaches. You'll get sore eyes looking for such men in Israel's present politician establishment.
Thinking about Sodom and Gomorrah isn't a good idea, Joseph E, for anyone in a state such as Israel, with such a vile record of mass land theft and murder of the innocent.
These right-wing MKs show what would happen if any genuine peace talks took place with the Palestinians. No territorial concessions would prove acceptable, no guarantees would be believed and the wrath that would be directed towards the Israeli leaders responsible would be appalling. I've come to the conclusion that only a major traumatic event of some sort, shaking the foundations of the Israeli State and destroying established thought patterns and expectations, would make genuine peace talks possible. The most benign likely scenario I could come up with would be a major breakdown in relations between the USA and Israel, leading to the suspension of all aid (diplomatic, financial and military). This might follow a major Mossad spying incident or a military adventure by Israel that proves unacceptable even to the propagandized, controlled Americans. This would have to be coupled with the background of a US presidency less Zionist than the current one. The future looks bleak.
Let's face it. There is no military solution to this conflict. Militarily Israel is an elephant. The Palestinians are ants. And it has been that way for decades. Yet Israel is not one inch closer to forcing the Palestinians to surrender than the day this started so long ago. Yes, a truce may give the Palestinians a chance to regroup, but it will not change the outcome of the war. Truce or no truce the Palestinians will never win and neither will the Israelis. So to play up the risks of a truce and completely ignore the rewards is intellectually dishonest. The way out of this is to give up things we don't want to give up, to forgive those who do not deserve forgivness, to help those we have feared and hated, to trust those we have distrusted, and to look to the future rather than the past. And like it or not, Israel is going to be the one that does most of the giving because she is the one who has most to give. Peace.
The arabs-pals have splashed their poison over the Kenesseth , from top to bottom , Arabs-pals desecrated the sanctity of the Holly Land . Welcome to the rise of Sodom & Gomorrah
Medias/ology ,rotten to the bones/ology with eyes only to convergence/ology, bring missiles closer to Tel-Aviv , to Jerusalem, A sold out State/ology , Bet you Peretz will evacuate more settlements in a two or three weeks . The corrupted Left is the mortal , suicidal ennenmy from within .
If controlling all entrance points to trade is aggression, and it is, then there can be no cessation in Israeli aggression. If Israeli allows Hamas and Islamic Jihad free access to all access points to Gaza, then they will just use it to smuggle more weapons. THe PA has neither the capacity nor the will to effectively halt the smugglers. Therefore they will soon rightly claim that Israel did not keep the bargain of ceasing all aggression toward Gaza and the Qassams will fly again. It was a bad bargain. Olmert should not have made such an agreement while the police power in Gaza is so dominated by Hamas. They will be made to look bad again and the US with them.
Halutz? QASSAMS ARE FALLING, but - Olmert declared : ISRAEL SHOULD RESTRAIN. - Halutz prohibited to respond. - Peretz became "invisible man". Who should protect Israelis?
This is what I just read Report: 33 percent of Sderot kids suffer post-traumatic stress 01:53 Send this to Shalom and Steinitz. Ahh forgot they are politicans..
THIS IS HOW IT SEEMS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
have you thought of the toll these offensives are taking on our boys? hey, maybe it'll hold and maybe not... but i'll take my chances on "hold"!
It is difficult to believe these idiotic government was elected!!! Olmert and his impotent, incompetent cabinet are the worst enemies of Israel. Need to can them asap!
why is everyone suprised at olmert, for folding at every step like a cheap camera? didn;t he say at a major speech in the u.s a year ago and i quote;we are tired of fighting,we are tired of winning well he sure fought the lebanon war like that. and he is fighting in gaza exactly like that. this is what he said he will do and this is what he doing exactly people of israel WAKE UP ,and get rid of this incompotent disaster, before you find yourself without a country god forbid
Nothing a government of suckers coulnd't explain away! Kicked Jews out of Gaza? Now enjoy the ride with Ehud Olmert and Halutz!
If Israel faces a new war and hamas is better armed and trained...Israel will have no other choice than to turn to the IAF not the IDF. This should have been done a long time ago. Emptying Gaza will become a necessity - not even an option.
Olmert is a fool. The only thing a truce fire means to Hamas and Hezbollah is this is a time to rebuild their defenses, Resupply all of their positions, and Redeploy and make new plans to attack Israel.Resolution 1701 was always a Joke after all the French helped shape it. Thats says alot right there. The only thing that Hamas, and Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad understand is force and firepower. This is the only way to deal with them. Proof is all the suicide bombers show that these people have already lost. When you commit your own people to acts like that the war is already lost. The Japanese learned that lesson in WW2 with their Kamikaze pilots. Isreal you want peace then keep doing what your doing. You cannot trust your neighbors. They only want your destruction. A truce to these people is only a sign of weakness. Wake up before it's to late. Get rid of Olmert he has made 1 bad decision after another. He's not to be trusted. GOD BLESS THE IDF AND ISRA
While I am watching the events in Gaza unfold from my residence in Texas, I can never forget the words of the Israeli vice counsel in Houston, Texas during May of 1994, who was promoting the Oslo accords. We were told that Israel controls the Palestinian Authority, and that Oslo will bring peace. Then were told that the Palestinian Authority, after they returned to Eretz Israel, were weak and ineffective. Now, I am witnessing how much control the Palestinian Authority really has, especially with the firing of the qassam rockets. Terrorism is being turned off and on, like a water spigot, and when it suits the interests and goals of the Palestinian Authority.
Is it only right wing? Anyone with a brain in their head can see that the terrorists will use this to rearm and regroup. Israelis must protesr this foolish decision of a Govt. of fools.
There can be no other explanation. As soon as Israel starts making a dent, Olmert and Livni are right there to cave.
