Right-wing activists hold anti-Annapolis rally at Western Wall
Around 15,000 attend demonstration; Left-wing activists to hold pro-summit rally Tuesday in Maryland.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Annapolis conference Jews in America Middle East peaceAround 15,000 people on Monday took part in a demonstration at the Western Wall to protest the Middle East peace summit being held Tuesday in Annapolis, Maryland.
Protest organizers questioned whether Israeli government representatives at the summit were heeding the wishes of the Jewish people and argued that the current Israeli government is behaving like a dictatorship.
A separate protest organized by the West Bank Settlement Council is scheduled to be held Monday night at the Paris Square in Jerusalem.
The rally is part of ongoing efforts by right-wing activists to protest what they fear could be plans to divide Jerusalem and evacuate settlements in the West Bank.
A coalition of dovish American Jewish organizations were to hold a rally for Israeli-Palestinian Peace to coincide with the peace conference on Tuesday.
The rally, which will be held near a church in the Maryland city, will be jointly sponsored by Americans for Peace Now, Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, Ameinu, Meretz USA, Habonim Dror, Hashomer Hatzair, Union of Progressive Zionists, The Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring, and Kesher ARZA.
On Sunday, a march to an interfaith rally in Annapolis was called off because organizers were told local police could not spare the extra personnel needed along the route.
Organizers had planned to walk from Temple Beth Shalom to a World War II memorial overlooking the U.S. Naval Academy, where the peace conference is scheduled for Tuesday. Participants ended up taking school buses to the rally instead.
"As you can see, the march didn't happen, but that is a police decision and not a synagogue decision," Rabbi Ari Goldstein of Temple Beth Shalom told participants at the memorial.
Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, president of The Israel Project, which helped prepare for the event, said authorities told organizers that there were not enough officers available to spread along the planned route. Several Anne Arundel County police monitored the flow of traffic at the memorial.
"This conference is putting tremendous strain on the local security establishment," Mizrahi said. To have so many world leaders coming here, it's quite a strain."

The U.S.A. is bullying Israel into making concessions for Arab's benefit. Once Hamas starts rocketing the city, no one will reach out their hand to help Israel. Over and over again this happens. When will you learn? They are your enemy. Prepare now for war.
don,(who are you, really) you are another one who needs a very elementary history lesson, given your statement. By the way, I have been to the west bank-and you? get some sound research in before you quack.
When we (USA) dump Israel will be the day God dumps The USA. Read Genesis 12:3 We will also be judged for our part in dividing God's covenent land. Get ready it's coming.
Actually the people at this prayer at the Kotel were almost entirley Datim-Leumim (national religious) who serve in the army, and hold a disproportionate number of posts in the officer core. Have a nice day.
"Right-wing activists hold anti-Annapolis rally at Western Wall" - a more balanced title should have been: "Demonstrators hold pro-Israeli rally at Western Wall"
I gladly fight so that the religious could spend their time devoted to Torah studies. It is a true honor. I am not so religious but respect their devotion and contributions to the spirituality and healing of the world. So I would die to defend them.
would have been good soldiers in IDF. Unfortunately most of them preferred to let us do the fighting when they were praying for us in the Synagogues.
What is the relationship between the right-wing demostrators and Hamas,or any terrorists?.....They don't want PEACE. -Shalom-
The original inhabitants of Gaza and South Lebanon were from the northern edge of the Mediterranean ring, white people, Philistines, not Arabs. Palestinian is a false play of words on Philistines. Therefore, the Arabs are not giving up land that they do not own, by heritage or right. God gave this Land, Israel today and a much larger Israel of yesteryear, to the Israelites, forever. The Arabs are the occupiers. ALL ISRAELITE LAND TO THE ISRAELITES. The King of England who legally held much of the Land in trust, allowed the Arabs who were born there to live there on condition that they obey the Law when he deeded the Land back to the Jews. ALL ARABS AND OTHERS TO OBEY GOD'S ISRAELITE. LAW.
The 25,000 people protesting at the wall as well as the US Jews on the right want peace just as much as the leftists. We DISAGREE on the method. Giving up Jewish land to the Arabs does not achieve peace. Israel gave them Gaza and now receives Kassam attacks in return. Barak left Lebanon and enabled Hezbollah to become a powerful force. Land for piece just does NOT work.
the only international border of israel with jordan egypt syria and lebanon is the 1922 mandate border! instead of writing total crap in latin or german try some factual knowledge
Hmmm, I vaguely remember reading in a book what the borders for Israel are. Now, what was the name of that book? I remember now, THE TORAH! By allowing Israel the borders that G-d designated and rebuilding the temple will be a precurser to the arival of a being the Christians call Christ, the Moslems, Mahdi and the Jews the Moshea. This would be good for Jews, Moslems, Hindus, Budhists, Christians and even Scientologists! We just need a leader who has the Cajones to do this!
Well, well, well, now we have our own Hizbollah and Hamas. May be we need to gather all the radicals, Arabs, Jews and Christians and dump them somewhere in Nevada or the Empty Quarter in Saudi Arabia. This will rid the world of all the religious nuts. They are all a threat no matter of their identities and beliefs. Wow.
Pardon my Latin but shouldn't it be "corpus separandum" instead?
There are no internationally designated borders for Israel except those with Jordan and Egypt. What you call borders are armistice lines.
well then there must not be many reasonable people in the world. the large majority of moslems do want to destroy israel and the minority that don't are just afraid what would happen to them if israel is destroyed. yes, i have been to the "West Bank" multiple times. It is insane to think that giving away your country piece by piece to your enemy who wants to destroy you is a recipe for peace. Einstein said that the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Typical Ha'aretz. Anybody opposed to Annapolis is called "RIGHT WING" while the "far left" are only referred to as "Dovish". Why not call them what they are: "Leftist Activists" or "Left Wing Activists".
I note thst the posters to this article so far are all US-based. No reasonable person wants the State of Israel to disppear. And it is bigoted immature meschugge nonsense to claim Annapolis will cause this. All the world wants is for Israel to move back to the internationally designated borders and to give back the land it has stolen from its neighbours and to live in peace with them. Rakentenwissenshcaft ist es nicht!
Thats me behind the guy holding a paper at the bottom left. A little ironic for Haaretz to call me a protester when I didnt even know these people were due to show up. I am not against the peace talks in Annapolis and I refuse to be labeled as one. Haaretz, remove my picture NOW. All religous folks who go to the Kotel to pray are dubbed protesters now by Haaretz, or RIGHT WING. Shamefule
and around 15,000 Jewish right-wing extremist at anti-Annapolis at Western Wall. Two sides of the same coin, once more united against peace.
Its time for America to dump Israel.
Learn to read, ya yemani kitsoni!
Is anyone really surprised that the leftist/reformed rally is being held at a church?
They all want the Jewish state to - peacefully -perish. This rally earns them brownie points with the Jew hating lefties - to whom they never tire of sucking up.
They couldn't care less if Israel if Israel lives or dies.
