Richard Goldstone slams UN for failing to censure Hamas
Goldstone laments wording of resolution adopted by UN Human Rights Council on Israel war crimes.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Goldstone report Hamas UN Israel newsSouth African jurist Richard Goldstone, who headed a UN investigation commission into the conduct of Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas during Israel's offensive in Gaza last winter, criticized on Friday the United Nations Human Rights Council's decision to endorse the report his commission had compiled.
Goldstone, whose report accused both Israel and Hamas of committing war crimes, lamented the wording of the resolution adopted by the UN Human Rights Council on Friday, because unlike the report, he said, the draft does not include any condemnation of Hamas, Israel Radio reported.
Goldstone told the Swiss newspaper Le Temps before the vote that the wording of the resolution was unfortunate because it included only censure of Israel. He voiced hope that the Human Rights Council would alter the wording of the draft.
In a special session Friday, 25 of the Human Rights Council's members voted in favor of the resolution that chastised Israel for failing to cooperate with the UN mission led Goldstone. Another 6 voted against and 11 abstained.
The resolution agreed in Geneva simply calls for the UN General Assembly to consider the Goldstone report and for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to report back to the Human Rights Council on Israel's adherence to it.
The report calls for the UN Security Council to refer the matter to the International Criminal Court if the Israelis or Palestinians fail to investigate the alleged abuses themselves.

Ciro, you are excusing Israel for blocking Gaza. Was it wrong from Israel to build the wall for the purpose to protect her citizens from constant rocket attacks from Hamas? Before the 6 days war Gaza belonged to Egypt. After the war Israel wanted to give it back but Egypt did not want it. Did you ever wonder why? And why did EGYPT block Gaza? Why did Egypt closed it borders in front of the Palestinian refugees during the Gaza war? I guess, if Egypt, a mostly Islamic country has a reason to be terrified from these terrorists, then Israel certainly has every reason to build the walls and do anything possible to protect her citizens. Don't you think so? I guess, you do not live in that neighborhood. I suggest you to move to Zderot and find out how friendly that neighborhood is there close to Hamas.
Judge Goldstone is to be commended for his report. While Israel has been accused of far larger war crime scale, both side should have been censored and the case should be referred to the criminal court.
abit late Mr Goldstone
Hamas IS a political group democratically elected by majority of dissatisfied Palestinians. Israel has made the Oslo Accord (1992)a joke. Not only continuing their LAND GRABBING policy, but BLOCKADING Gaza since they came to power. IF CUBA BLOCKADED THE U.S.A. and we retaliated against them, Would we then be terrorists also ??? A blockade is an international act of aggression, and the oppressed have an obligation to defend themselves.
No condemnation of Hamas is unjust. Israel attacked Gaza because its civilians were under constant rockets bombardment. My heart is with Palistinans people, but Hamas is guilty as hell. I guess wars without crimimality are like roses without thorns.
I would like to nominate Goldstone for the Academy awards for his brilliant performance in "The Lady Protests too much" - His brilliant and uncompromising portrayal of Surprise and "disappointment" is nothing but amazing. He manages to slip into the role blocking out previous UNHCR resolutions (even the official terms of reference he was giving). He has my vote - previously I would have given it to David Irving for Hitler cared & loved the Jews but he even he could not master this complex play. Good on you mate.
While Hamas is not faultless, there is no parity or equation between Israel's crimes and Hamas's desperate reactions. Hamas's primitive projectiles killed 3 Israeli civilians. However, Israel's state-of-the-art machine of death killed and incinerated and maimed thousands and utterly destroyed half of Gaza. It is therefore unfair to mention Hamas and Israel in the same sentence.
Instead of pushing for rejection of everything, it might have been more prudent for somebody to see that the resolution more accurately reflected Judge Goldstone's recommendations. What is so scary about Israelis investigating an Israeli government-ordered action?
Could a man with his experience be so naive (and stupid) to believe that his report would be handled in an "even handed" manner and wouldn't be turned against Israel alone? Where has he been living the past 60 years. Makes you wonder how is it that stupid people can get to positions like his
Oh Goldstone what did you expect, Didn`t you understand for what you were sent on this mission, You were literally asked to incriminate only Israel by the UN HRC, They never cared about hearing anything about Hamas, We tried to explain this to you, time and time again! But you were convinced otherwise, What did you expect, that the UN would give your conclusion on Hamas any legitimacy, when from the start all the UN HRC asked is for you to incriminate Israel? Goldstone what a Naïve man you are! ``Thank You`` Mr. Goldstone for opening a new wave of Anti Semitism in the world
geez, now he understands why jews were so hestitant to allow such UN people in to conduct a "thorough and balanced" report! even smart people can be dumb!
Hamaswill never admit to wrongdoing because in their eyes the atrocities that they commit are actually religious acts of faith.
I am sure Goldstone tought he was doing the right thing. That somehow this report would be used for good. Little did he know that he was being used as a pawn. No one feels more shame then him right now. No one!
Israel doesn't have that much to worry about - By the time anti-Israel factions are finished, they will have crafted such a thoroughly politicized statement that it will be discarded in the final stages. It will read pretty much like the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", and everyone is going to know it for what it is.
He opened the flood gates for all anti-semites to criticize Israel exclusively, ignoring the evils of Hamas. That's because he criticized Jews for defending themselves.
Goldstone found there was reason to believe both Hamas and the PA had committed war crimes, and crimes against humanity. All should be censured.
Is he so naive to think that the UNHRC would approve a resolution that censures an arab party? Just proves what a complete farce the report is.
Stop your pathetic attempts to equate a vile terrorist organization with democracy defending its citizens.
No doubt, he is the "good guy" here, he tells it exactly like it is.... Unlike the U.S. and the Arabs on both sides of the political extreme.....
