Report: U.S. working to mend ties between Israel and Turkey
U.S. diplomats reportedly said the conflict is harming regional stability and efforts to deal with Iran.
By Haaretz Service Tags: Turkey Iran nuclear Israel news Gaza warSenior American diplomats have urged Turkey to work to restore relations with Israel in the wake of deteriorating ties between the two countries, Army Radio reported on Friday.
According to the report, U.S. officials have asked the Turkish foreign ministry to ease tensions with Israel - which have cooled significantly since Israel's winter offensive in the Gaza Strip - explaining that the escalating conflict is harming U.S. interests in the Middle East.
The escalating tension between Turkey and Israel threatens regional stability and undermines the fight against Islamic extremism as well as the efforts to halt Iran's nuclear program, the U.S. diplomats reportedly told their Turkish counterparts.
U.S. diplomats are also reportedly planning to meet with Israeli officials to discuss the conflict with Turkey.
Israel expressed outrage and rebuked the Turkish envoy this week over a new television drama airing on a state-sponsored channel in Turkey that depicts Israel Defense Forces soldiers as brutal war criminals.
The drama includes images of Israeli soldiers shooting children in Gaza and lining up a firing squad to shoot at a group of Palestinians.
Prior to the conflict over the television show, relations between Turkey and Israel had grown increasingly strained over the cancellation of a joint NATO air force drill.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that "diplomatic sensitivities" led his government to ban Israel from the NATO exercise, according to news reports.
Erdogan added that the Turkish people had rejected Israel's participation in the drill.
Assistant U.S. Secretary of State Philip Crowley said earlier this week that it was inappropriate for Turkey to ban Israel from the joint exercise.

As a casual observer, it seems to me that Israel doesn't do much to cultivate its relationships outside the middle east and the US, and even there its lacking, and as a result there are more misconceptions about Israelis and Jews than ever. To cover some Woody Allen territory here, Jews do not have stripes, tails or horns. I would recommend the Israelis to recognize the Turkish Republic of North Cypress. To do so would undermine Erdogan, who is a jerk anyway, and would free up the Kemalists Parlaimentarians from Istanbul to Asana to reassert themselves. Of course, Osama and Erdogan would freak out if this happened. Call me a dreamer, but more Democracy seems like a good idea right about now.
Very interesting indeed!!!! Big brother is once again being used by the Lobby to help save the image of its little brother. Funny!! How the U.S uses its power internationally to promote Israeli interests globally. There are many other problems in the world that the U.S could get involved in and try to help out but no they wouldn't. The U.S should simply stay out of it.
...and it is coming. President Obama could not come straight into office and force Israel to do anything. What he has done instead is pay out rope to Israel as it makes mistake after mistake. That rope will be yanked when the Goldstone Report comes up for a vote in the UNSC, and it will. Imagine if (maybe Bibi) blinked and the US simply abstained? It's not like Israel would then face anything more than simple justice for what it did in Gaza. There is fundamentally nothing wrong with bringing criminals to justice.
It is time for the Kurdish people to be liberated from the Arab, Turkish and Iranian occupations. Free Kurdistan with access to the sea!
The biggest threat to US interests in the region is blind US support for Israel. Period. This helps to create an environment that al - qaeda easily exploits and forces authoritarian Arab regimes to tread cautiously when considering American entreaties. Being Israel's poodle aids al - qaeda recruitment. This has not changed under Obama, all campaigns declarations to the contrary. The Taliban has also been skillful of playing the US/Israel card in its own recruitment of militants that then go on to kill US soldiers in Afghanistan. Israel is pushing the US to bear down on Turkey to repair the relationship. Yet this will only further erode US interests in the Middle East. It is time to face reality and fundamentally assess the US relationship with Israel.
Who decides who is the axis of evil? Turkey can choose to be friends with whoeever it wants. Syria and Iran may not be Israels friends but that doesnt mean they cant be other countries friends. Israel is at war with Syria (technically) and Iran potentially. They occupy Syrian territory so they can act as they wish towards Israel and Israel threatens Iran every day with a miltary strike over its nuclear program that Israel already has. So Iran can be an enemy of Israel too.its enemy is not necessarily turkeys enemy because thats the problem between those countries.Has Turkey threatened Israel? Just a year ago Turkey was mediating between Israel and Syria until its brutal offensive on Gaza. So people should stop crticising Turkey unjustly. The actions of Israel are more in line with Evil than the so called axis of evil nations.Dont forget that Israel is the largest arms exporter after US and France, especially to african nations torn by civil war.
Israel should make a movie about the Armenian Genocide and when the Turks complain about it, Israel should say its only a a movie and that it does not reflect on what people think about the turkish army
it took a little bit long but now press is awakening and taking its part of responsibility in Turkey. Columnists from different newspapers are warning of a decline in Turkish-Israel relationships. On Thursday six former Turkish foreign ministers were together in a turkish tv show also urging AKP to stop this trend. So there is finally a counter trend rising up in Turkey. Israel has to be critized in regards to its politics and war against the people of gazza, but that the only two democratic nations in this region are facing now a real crisis in their relations is nuts and must end immediately.
you are very naive. the idea that obama could do the bidding of the muslim world is a pipe dream. the idea that obama could force his will on a sovereign nation is grandiose.
I'm can't say for certain that Turkey is siding with Iran or Syria but it sure is siding with the oppressed Palestenians. As for your point about the muslim brothers then yes of course palestitians are mostly muslims but there are more reasons than just religion here. Of course religion does play a part though, which is understandable. Well, most of the west specially US and western christian countries do also side with the christians and Jews. What is so surprising with it?
Erdogan and his ilk have brazenly gone too far this time. No self-respecting people should put up with so much hate, smear, slander, and insult. The ball is in the Turkish court and it has to be made clear to them that the relationship is a two-way street and Israel isn't a Turkish colony. Enough of the crocodile tears over Israeli completely justified operation in Gaza!
Turkey's NATO membership is "deja vue". Gone. Finito. Bye bye. Turkey will soon become an full member of the Axis of Evil aka the Radical Moslem League. Get ready for many more 9/11s.
Not because he reached out his hand but because he let Bibi walk over him. Shaking a hand like that is dangerous, before you know it Bibi steps on your hand while shaking it with a smiling Obama doing nothing. One can wonder if Israel is helped by this on the long term, when the costs for the Americans of Muslim anger over the US impotence concerning Israel will rise and rise giving others opportunities to step in (energy deals, Russia, China).
Turkey doesn't want to be an ally of Israel, they want to be ally of Iran and Syria, their muslim brothers.
