Report: Sweden won't probe paper over IDF organ harvesting article

Army Radio: Swedish judicial authorities ruled article did not constitute racism and was therefore legal.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel organ harvesting Israel news Sweden IDF

The Swedish Chancellor of Justice has decided not to launch an investigation into a newspaper that alleged that Israeli soldiers kill Palestinian civilians in order to harvest their organs, Army Radio reported Saturday.

Swedish judicial authorities ruled that the report in the tabloid Aftonbladet did not constitute racism and was therefore legal, according to Army Radio. The ruling was in response to two requests submitted to the Swedish Chancellor of Justice, Army Radio said.

According to Swedish law, a publication may be considered illegal if it is threatening or expresses contempt towards a person or group of people based on their race, ethnicity, or nationality.

The report sparked an outcry in Israel, where the article's author has been accused of disseminating "a blood libel" against the Jews. Much of the controversy was due to the article's attempts to tie Jewish criminals who trafficked in organs in New Jersey to the alleged harvesting of Palestinian organs by Israel Defense Forces soldiers.

Earlier this month, meanwhile, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt canceled his visit to Israel, scheduled for September 11, in wake of the continued tension in relations between the two countries.

Göran Rosenberg is one of the best jewish writers I ever read from. Its sad that they in Israel paint him out to be the bad guy. Of course to live in Israel is what I like to call; is to live outside the worldmedia. Now do you unlike him because he wrotes with dignity and honor (even when it goes against what he stands for) or do you just hate everyone that actually tries to critizese the state of Israel. Enough already...

...Sweden has freedom of the press, unlike Israel and its incessant censorship. And you really should learn why Israel became a pariah state in the transplant world. You might read up on Israeli organ brokers, and how even though it was illegal up until last year, being illegal now has not really changed anything. The article in question was nothing but a tabloid story, but with Israel's bone-headed reaction to it, many in the world did a little research and came across pieces such as the very detailed expose in the Christian Science Monitor a few years ago that blew the lid off of Israeli organ brokering as well as others.

Maybe if the Swedish government would have had an own paper in which this gutter vice blood libel was published, one could say that Sweden did throw a blood libel in the world. In Sweden the government does not control the press. Gutter journalism, smear, slander and lies do exist in the media (as in every country the Swedes have their tabloids too). It is called freedom of information. Why does Haaretz or an Israeli institution (is there not a Swedish Jewish watchdog NGO) not carry out a poll in Sweden to find out what the Swedes actually think of this article and Aftonbladet? Then one could say with some more accuracy: the Swedes are okay or the Swedes are not okay and anti-Semitic, depending on the outcome of the poll. To be honest, without more knowledge it is pathetic to condemn a whole country and it's population for a gutter journalism article in an evening tabloid.

It would be appropriate to air all the details surrounding the story, especially those covered by Haaretz years ago, because, the more we find them on the net, it simply looks like denial and cover-up. Organs for money-quote: Abu Kabir head only reprimanded for illegal organ removal 26/09/2005 http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=629017 The ministry's findings, published in April 2001, were severe: The institute, it said, had not only removed organs from bodies without the families' consent; it had also performed autopsies that violated the terms of court orders and deceived both the families and the ministry. The removed organs and tissue, it found, were generally sold to research institutes and hospitals for research purposes, with the money being used to defray the costs of the autopsies.

    • 18:08

Sabra, Many of your points to me are simply formulated having a wrong premise in head, and thus, to some another person who might accept it because of intellectual or political convenience. This premise is constructing all the arguments along the opposition of a 'good guy' and a 'baddie'. It belongs to the idiolects like Hasbara or Hamas PR. The GC & HR define and delimits the objective, setting the opposition both parts (and apparently, you too) choose to ignore: either you are within the rules or outside (before you question those, I can stop you by reminding that invalidating them you morally invalidate any claim of similar harm done to you e.g genocide etc.). This opposition by no means implies that the conformity with these rules tantamount to a 'lil clean war'. About half of IDF casualties were hit by the friendly fire. The rules imply that you cannot raze down people with white flag. Effective or neutralized, Goldstone report is a litmus test of abiding to law.

...no matter how many times you claim that bottles rockets were the cause, everyone who paid attention knows it was Israel that planned the War on Gaza prior to even entering the ceasefire, it was Israel collectively punishing the civilians prior to, during, and now after the War on Gaza; that was the REAL motive. State sponsored terrorism on a captive people so Israel could elicit a desired political result. The Goldstone Report mentions "collective punishment" eighteen times! I personally will remind every Congressman and Senator and the White House of these facts until I die or until Israel is finally made to face its crimes. And there are thousands of others just like myself who will work hard to make sure Israel can never terrorize the Palestinians in this way again: with impunity. If Israel won't follow international law, why should anyone else in the Middle East?

"Clarity of thoughts is a prerequisite to rational analysis". CH If it's not the lack of this clarity then perhaps it is the fact that you may have not followed Swiss (Dino)' argument in the last articles, that makes you develop an irrational analysis. He was referring mostly to the evaluation of the HR aspect in Goldstone's report on the LC, and you are referring to Israeli rationale of the operation. Regardless this rationale, the operation could, but did not abstain from breaching number of GC & HR regulations pertaining to conduct of war. Moreover, a massive PR campaign turned these facts into "nothing wrong", as Netanyahu, Merkel and Ian Kelly later discarded it without countering a single statement of it. If I gather it right, Swiss' idea is the equity of regard to, and the effect of the two legal evaluations.

Israel's judicial system would be all over someone who engaged in that activity, not only because it is evil and intrinsically repugnant but because the politics of that crime would be extraordinarily dmagaging to Israelies and Jews. The criticism of the journalist and newspaper have never been that it is beyond bounds to run a story on organ theft but that there appears to be no reliable corroboration of the story. In short it doesn't meet journalistic standards. That being so, why was the story run????? One can reasonably speculate as a matter of free speech, right.

This article was totally based on hear say and nonsense. The paper was not able to even come up with any real proof and is to lazy to try to find something themselves. So.... do we trust therefor the source (Palestinians who claim we hand out radio active candies in Gaza) or do we condemn the Jews as by definition even based on rumours and hear say as they must be guilty? Or as would be in a normal situation between Swedes themselves lets first investigate and then publish the facts not rumours.

Having now read the article in question, it is clear that it is rather dubious journalism. The journalist does not explicitly link the arrests in New Jersey to the killing of Palestinians, but the inference seems clear. As for anti-semitism, I believe it falls short. If he wanted to explore Israel's transplant policies, he should have done that. But the article is merely tabloid. You could easily have stuck in any other nation's army and a national minority, and it would read the same. That is what sells tabloids, but it is not journalism. Ultimately, by giving this article so much attention, I believe the Foreign Ministry of Israel risks falling in the mud.

A sleazy tabloid publishes an asinine article based upon old news. And Sweden is promptly beat over the head by Israel's racist Foreign Minister for that fact beyond it's control. Sweden offered to mediate, and Israel refused. The smears and slander of Lieberman continued, no different than the blood libel slime of the tabloid. And so what SHOULD Sweden do? Nothing is all it can do because it has nothing to defend having nothing to do with the original tabloid slime; while nothing it did to help would be accepted by the racist Foreign Minister. Tabloid journalists are slime. Avigdor Liberman is the sort of man who has made his career appealing to the same emotions and mentality as the tabloid journalist appeases. Sweden is wise to let it go. The tabloid, Avigdor Liberman, the low life filth of the world must be let to swirl down their sewer by themselves. Decent people don't entertain either.

I have not looked at the article, though will certainly look at it today. Beyond that, however, I believe that the world, when criticizing issues involving Israelis, be precise in terminology. Citing responsibility of "Jews" or "Israelis" for anything is absurd, for it presupposes that there is some monolithic group that agrees on everything. If there is an accusation about segments of the IDF, then the conversation should be there, not on Israel, Jews, or anti-semitism. The outlandishness of the charges at first glance, however, makes me suspect that anti-Semitism was not a motivating factor in the writing to the article.
