Report: Russia found no secret Iran-bound cargo on 'hijacked' ship
Interfax news agency quotes Russian spokesman as saying there was nothing but timber and lumber on the Arctic Sea.
By Reuters Tags: Iran Russia Israel newsRussian prosecutors found no suspicious materials on a ship that was reportedly hijacked, despite media reports it was carrying an air-defence system for Iran, Russian newswires said on Saturday.
Russia's foreign minister denied the British and Russian press reports earlier this month.
The Maltese-registered cargo ship, the Arctic Sea, was officially carrying timber from Finland to Algeria when it was boarded on July 24 by eight men. They were charged with kidnapping and piracy after it was intercepted by Russian warships off Cape Verde.
Since then there has been speculation the ship, crewed by Russians, Estonians and Latvians, was carrying a secret cargo.
British and Russian press reports, citing military sources in Israel and Russia, said the Arctic Sea had been loaded with Russian S-300 missiles at the naval port of Kaliningrad without the Kremlin's knowledge.
Mossad, Israel's intelligence agency, had been reportedly monitoring the shipment and tipped off Moscow.
A spokesman for the Russian Prosecutor General's Investigative Committee said prosecutors found nothing but timber on the ship, anchored near the Canary Islands.
"The ship was searched with the help of modern appliances, inside and outside. There was nothing but timber and lumber. Nothing that could compromise the Russian Federation was found," Interfax news agency quoted him as saying.
However, suspicions persist in the media, with reports that officials from Spain, Malta and Russia could not agree on how and where to transfer the ship, while Spain denied it entry to its port of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands.
Last week Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Russia, but his office declined to elaborate on the affair.

"How about the missiles being offloaded by a helicopter onto another ship?" How about "secretly" operating a commercial vessel with a helipad and a heavy-lift helicopter?
How about the missiles being offloaded by a helicopter onto another ship?
"At this point I`ve changed my mind about Israel attacking Iran. Please do. Do it now." Just be patient. They are waiting for Obama to give the word.
"aboard an I.N. Dolphin Class Submarine on its way" Anybody who assumes that SA-20 containerized missiles can be loaded into a dolphin class subnarine has never been near its entry hatches ...
"unloaded into subs most likely" You should have added: Unloaded through barndoor openings in the pressure hull into the subs' spacious cargo holds ...
...because it is just as likely they are there as they ever were on the Arctic Sea. The S-300 missile defense system is just that, for defense. Russia is free to sell them to Iran and ship 'em direct by train. This made up Arctic Sea scenario distracted all the silly people as the trains rolled through... At this point I've changed my mind about Israel attacking Iran. Please do. Do it now.
WHOEVER THEY ARE. IDF? NO MATTER, IF ONLY 'TIMBER' WAS FOUND, SOMETHING ELSE WAS 'REMOVED' OR TRANSFERRED BY ISRAELI'S... Someday, we may know what 'it' was.
and will we ever know?
around the world. So Israelis could hijack it with relative ease. When all Russia has to do is put it on a train and transport it over the border into Iran. This story has never made sense. As for Netanyahu's well publicised 'secret' trip to Moscow. It was a shopping trip disguised as urgent foreign business (Lieberman is Foreign Minister? Isn't he?) I mean Netanyahu has previous hasn't he? He spent Lebanon2 shopping, wining and dining and visiting the theatre in London. Spending more in a week, than Israelis earn in a decade. But hey he came second in the election, thats why he is Prime Minister.
He who thinks that an item the size of an SA-20 missile container can be loaded aboard a sbmarine has never been near one.
.If Russia wanted to sell missiles to Iran, they need no secrecy since they already announced their intentions.Easier would be to send them across the caspian sea or by air.To Siria, the same, the difference being the air delivery should be the preferred route. Now why when some ship can"t be tracked anymore, people automatically suspects it is carrying weapons? .There are many other cargoes as valuable or more to be smuggled or robbed than weapons:drugs, allways illegal, dangerous chemicals, stolen archeological artifacts, etc. The fact that the russian navy boarded the ship doesn"'t prove logically that it was carrying weapons, but that they were worried about the status of the crew, many of them russian sailors. The US Coast Guard would do the same,as any other navy in the world.
Look no further than the 1967 SIX DAY WAR when Russia supplied us with arms delivered via Egypt. I remember the many thousands of brand new, most still unpainted, Russian trucks and other new equipment we captured in Sinai with little more on the odometers than the distance from Suez to mid Sinai which we then drove North and back to ISRAEL. The American satirist, Art Buchwald I think was his name, wrote a brilliant piece at the time thanking Nikita Kruschev for the delivery and saying "isn't it time we cut out the middleman and deal direct with the supplier......the whole world knows that you are supplying us so cut the Embargo sham"
I think that Russia just supplied Israel with the S-300 missle defense system intended for Iran, but is now located on the hilltops of Israel, pointed east toward Iran. Israel thanks you very much for the free military hardware.
I think that Israel should have sunk the cargo ship before telling Russia where it was.
As we say down here in Texas, they speak with forked tonges.
The time line suggest that the original cargo was removed. That would explain why nothing was found. The ship was boarded by elite IDF units, halted, unloaded into subs most likely and spirited away. Anyone who reads Tom Clancy can imagine that!!!
When will russia declare war on israel? This was a state sponsidered hijacking of a russian ship if you accept the russian facts. Its funny how israel attacks a nuke site in syria, syria says it was an empty warehouse, but there is no repsonse. Now same deal with russia. The ship had missles and they are not at the bottom of the ocean. They are still a threat and need to be dealt with. This is not over yet.
.....until it has been officially denied by some lying government.
The string of bad intel and botched operations has become long and depressing. The Great Greengrocer Raid during the Second Lebanon War had been the worst until now.
Either stashed away in Davy Jones Locker or aboard an I.N. Dolphin Class Submarine on its way "Home"! Some nervous guys in a certain country, for the guidance system could well be compromised, now they will have to purchase some other system. There goes the Iranian and Syrian Air Defense, unless they start to seriously place some hope on their pilots. The IAF loves nothing more than a good old dogfight. Tallyho from chilly Swiss Alps.
The compromising cargo it at the bottom of the sea where no batiscafe can reach.
