Report: Jordan threatened to expel Israel envoy over Temple Mount clashes
Arab paper says Amman made threat as Palestinians, security forces clashed in Jerusalem.
By Jack Khoury Tags: Jerusalem Israel news Jordan Temple MountJordan threatened to expel Israel's ambassador to the Kingdom last week in the event of Israel choosing to forcibly enter the Temple Mount during clashes in Jerusalem, the pan-Arab paper Al-Quds al-Arabi reported on Monday.
According to the newspaper, tensions between the two neighbors flared as Jordan threatened to carry out the move, which the country said would be in response to Israel intervening in favor of what it called Jewish extremists.
A senior Jordanian source told Haaretz last week that police must keep Jewish religious extremists away from the Temple Mount and keep the Old City's Mugrabi Gate closed. "That will calm the atmosphere while respecting the Jordanian role in Al-Aqsa Mosque," he said.
In an interview to Haaretz last week, Jordan's King Abdullah II further elaborated the significance Jerusalem had to the Hashemite Kingdom, and the concerns the Temple Mount clashes recently raised.
"We are seeing problems in Jerusalem that will directly destabilize not only the relationship with Jordan - which has a special concern and role in Jerusalem that is recognized in the peace treaty - but will also create a tinderbox that will be a major flashpoint throughout the Islamic world," the king said.
"I told Prime Minister Netanyahu, as well as his predecessors, that they have to understand that unilateral actions in Jerusalem are going to jeopardize all these efforts," he added.

they really do want you out of the country, they are just looking for the right reason so spare them the trouble and call your embassadors home.they have already chosen sides. Get it througt your thick sculls Isreal....YOU ARE ALONE!!!! Long live Israel!!!
The biggest enemy of the state of Israel are the current generation of zionists. They are no more than zombies. History teaches us that no racist, arrogant regime that suppresses those under their control can survive for long: they all perished. And the same will happen to Israel if her leaders do not change to become humane and humanistic. Why should Israel be an exception?
S: "How else do you negotiate with the very people who wish to destroy your culture/civilization." If you are Israel then you keep building on their land, even as you keep complaining that they aren't co-operating. S: "Do you not see the big picture, axel..?" Yeah, he does. You don't, apparently.... S: "You first start by shaking hands." And Bibi's Boys were still building on that land as the hands were being shook. S: "Then introducing each other." And Bibi's Boys (and Olmert's, and Sharon's, and Barak's, and Bibi's, and Pere's, and Rabin's, etc.) keep on building while everyone was exchanging business cards. S: "You then sit down and discuss the issues." And Bibi is insisting that his boys can keep building while everyone is sitting down at that table. S: "None of the above has yet been achieved." It has been tried ad-infinitum, and the only "achievement" has been more and more construction.
DP: "The Israeli authorities prevented right-wing activists from going up to the Temple Mount, and the Arabs stoned a group of tourists" Bibi: How do we stop these "activists"? Barak: Err, by calling them "tourists" instead? Bibi: BRILLIANT, EHUD! UTTERLY BRILLIANT!! DP: "I think the tourists were mainly French Christians, but I could be mistaken." Ya' think so, David? Ya' may be wrong, David? Why does that sound like you already know you're wrong, but you can't resist running it up the flagpole regardless?
"As i recall, the Balfour Declaration was not a legal document, but a statement of British policy." - gary rath Correct. "It still took a Vote of the United Nations to make any changes to the Mandate legal." - gary rath Anyone who wants to have a clue, read the "Balfour Declaration" (2 November 1917), the British White Paper of June 1922, and 'The Palestine Mandate, The Council of the League of Nations, July 24, 1922. There is no reason for the insane ignorance shown on this forum today. Anyone may check the real documents.
"The Balfour declaration created Palestine as a Jewish state in 1920." - American Historian Really? Did you ever read the Balfour declaration? And don't you know it dates to 1917? The Balfour declaration did not create the League of Nations Mandate. "Not the Brits carved off 77% of historical Palestine and created Palestine on the west side of the Jordan and Trans-Jordan (literally across the Jordan) on the east." - ibid The two mandates were combined for administrative convenience of the British, they were never seen as one entity. "But ya really gotta read a history book once in awhile." - ibid You clearly do not follow your own advice. "Something to think about, toots." - American Horses. . . The schools are pretty bad in Washington D.C. are they?
"Right on, seems people dont get it, Jordan IS Palestine." - Chaphani I guess it must be a full moon, all the lunatics are out. Jordan currently occupies the Transjordan, an autonomous region formed from the League of Nations Mandate of Palestine shortly after it's origination. Israel occupies part of the League of Nations Mandate of Palestine. The Class A Mandates were intended to be temporary until responsible governments were formed. Jordan is not Palestine, it is 'transjordan', i.e. the other side of the Jordan from Palestine.
If Jordan thinks it still administers the Jewish Temple Mount, then perhaps Jordan should also take responsibility for the numerous riots and attacks that Muslim "worshipers" have been responsible for over the years. Or does Jordanian "ownership" only extend to rights but not to responsibilities. Typical Arabs. The late King Hussein, a true leader, officer and gentleman, would never have acted like this. His weakling son, Abdullah II, is being led by his Islamo-Fascist elements into ruination. Attacking Israel is his obvious road to salvation in Arab eyes. As for extremists, only MUSLIM extremists are permitted by Israeli police to enter the Holy Jewish Temple Mount. Strange, but true. When they get violent, then Muslims are allowed only if they are unlikely to be violent - and Jews are completely banned. By Israel, imagine that!
Sir, for His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan and for the international community of states, Al-Quds (East Jerusalem) is occupied territory since June 1967 and as outlined in the peace treaty with between Jordan and Israel, Jordan has a special responsibility regarding the Holy Places in East Jerusalem. May be the President of Medinat Israel Mr. S. Peres invites Bibi for a 5 o'clock tea to inform him of what would be appropriate to do or not to do in this part of occupied Arab-Palestine. If Jordan would expel the Israeli envoy, well, there would be headlines all over the globe, however the extreme right wing FM Lieberman would not be affected, Mr. Netanyahu would make a short statement in the Knesset indicating there is a misunderstanding, and President Peres would send a diplomatic letter to the King that Jordan's interests in the Holy district will be considered, (however the occupation continues).
Try writing something more memorable. So typical.
How else do you negotiate with the very people who wish to destroy your culture/civilization. Do you not see the big picture, axel..? You first start by shaking hands. Then introducing each other. You then sit down and discuss the issues. None of the above has yet been achieved. Just demands and threats of another intifada. Diplomacy demands respect and patience, not found in your posts.
As i recall, the Balfour Declaration was not a legal document, but a statement of British policy. It still took a Vote of the United Nations to make any changes to the Mandate legal.
The King of Jordan is an American preppy, remember, and he has that gorgeous Palestinian Queen to please. It might be a case of avoiding blackball (or should i say blue ball?).
Punishable by random acts of rioting, arson and murder. Didn't you get the memo?
"The Balfour declaration created Palestine as a Jewish state in 1920." The Balfour declaration is from 1917, and carries not the slightest legal weight as in 1917 Britain was not the sovereign over the territory later defined as Palestine. "the west bank was renamed to Trans-Jordan" The geographical genius without the slightest idea what Cis-Jordan and Trans-Jordan means. "But ya really gotta read a history book once in awhile" We better not ask for them in your library ...
Bernadiner is correct. The Balfour declaration created Palestine as a Jewish state in 1920. It consisted of what is now Israel and Jordan. The Hashem family had a fit because of what the Saud family got and they got nothing. Not the Brits carved off 77% of historical Palestine and created Palestine on the west side of the Jordan and Trans-Jordan (literally across the Jordan) on the east. An interesting question would be what if the east bank retained the name of Palestine, and the west bank was renamed to Trans-Jordan? You could then rename Trans-Jordan to Israel and have Palestine as the occupied east bank. Something to think about, toots. But ya really gotta read a history book once in awhile.
If you want to argue that Jordan is part of Palestine, then you must accept that the corallary of that statement is that Israel is Palestine too. If you want to argue that the seperation of Jordan from Palestine is illegal, then so is the seperation of Israel from Palestine. And, if you read the declaration, you'll see that the Jewish homeland is to be part of Palestine, not to replace Palestine. As another poster said LEARN HISTORY
is when he or she visits the stolen land and that is from all the radical extremist kahanist squatter trash....which even zionist politico and common people need prrotection from....(rabin) charro from mexico needs to go shopping and not bother her head w/arab kings who can shop anywhere and buy anything....
What does it take for Muslims to accept the fact that Israel is here to stay? Any religion that has to maintain hegemony over all others is a religion that has to be contained like a spoiled brat. Just because the Arabs have Israel outsized and outnumbered doesn't mean they should get their way.
what a pitty. the nice King wont go to shop in Israel as he does with his family. Be careful Mr. King because you may loose the Israeli protection you have enjoyed so far and Syria and hamas will invade your pathetic kingdom.
don't threatened to expel Israel's ambassador do it, If more arab country with a peace treaty close the door to Israel maybe they come to their sense, if they have some left.
Thanks Jania for clarifying. Your argument makes sense (more than Mark's...) but I don't agree. Do you mean to say that Iraq 'really' forms an integral part of Israel because some piece of paper almost 3 decades before the state of Israel was founded said so? If you are coherent, I guess you think that all settlements should be dismantled once Palestine is a sovereign state, since they are on land which 'on paper' (just as in the 1922 situation) belongs to another future state?
Jordan was born of fraud, which it's fated thereafter to prop up via unremitting retroactive repairs to the past ? even the distant past. Not too many years back Jordan TV aired a documentary on Jerusalem portraying ancient Jebusites as Arabs. Jordan's population is overwhelmingly Palestinian. The only exceptions are the Beduin who accompanied Abdullah I from Hejaz. Like the Hashemites, they're foreigners. Now these outsiders design to delegitimize the natives. Expectedly, governments and human rights NGOs worldwide are silent. More at : http://tinyurl.com/65flo4
Balfour merely memtioned a vague "Jewish Homeland" in Palestine. Never said in ALL of the mandate nor an independent state, nor set any borders of that "homeland".Then ignorance is all yours. David
"Under the terms of the Mandate ALL of the land of the Mandate territories were to be part of the Jewish Homeland" You must be one of the last dinosaurs trying to spread this lie. Even most Zionists have abandoned the allegation that the mandate was meant to create a Jewish minority rule over an Arab majority. Which would be the logical conclusion of your statement.
They used it as garbage dump and latrine.
Right on, seems people dont get it, Jordan IS Palestine.
You dont know your blank from a hole in the ground, of all people jordan knows litle about respect for sacred places,Jordan stfu! Ask them how they kept the area before israel retook it.
The specifications are daunting. Height, 200 Km. Thick enough to keep out rockets and lies. Length, the entire combined borders of Greater Israel. It must extend beneath the waters of the Jordan River and Dead Sea to ensure hermetic sealing of the border from swimmers, submarines, fish and various non-Kosher sea creatures. Israel will be able to exist without having to put up with what the world thinks, or how it responds to the actions of Israel. A fine mesh metal screen on top will prevent outside ideas from coming in, or unsightly pictures of Israeli-Arab relations getting out. This separation fence will solve all of Israel's problems with a hostile world.
"Israel most certainly has changed direction, away from the Olmert distraction into a far more pragmatic approach." - settlement expansion - refusal to negotiate Jerusalem - refusal to negotiate borders - refusal to discuss refugees problem - advance restrictions to Palestinan sovereignty From which dictionary did you look up "pragmatic"?
"In 1922, Britain allocated over half of Israel territory to Jordan" What nonsense! Have you ever read the Balfour Declaration? Read it carefully, it's not very long, before you post any more such drivel. In any case, Israel did not exist in 1922.
How dare the Jordania king criticize and threaten Israel over respect for Muslims on the Temple Mount. It's time for Israel to sit down with the Hashemite (from Arabia) king and have a frank talk with him about his grandfather and father, who violated the armistice agreement that recognized the right of Israeli Jews and all other Jews to visit their holy sites in Jerusalem. Israel should also call King Abdullah on "Jordan's role in Al-Aqsa Mosque" and "the significance Jerusalem had to the Hashemite Kingdom." Jordan invaded and illegally annexed Jerusalem and had no rights there at all. Their annexation of eastern Jerusalem was recognized only by Britain and Pakistan. It was illegal. Israel is overly nice and overly generous in allowing Jordan and role at all in any part of Jerusalem. Perhaps the Hashemite king should go back home to Arabia and give the Palestinians the country of which they are the majority population. His selfish need to be king denies the Palestinians a state.
Erikn, to find the answer to your question about how the Brits could give part of Israel's land away in 1922 before the state of Israel existed, you need to study the League of Nations' British Mandate and all related international agreements at that time. The land the Brits gave to the Hashemites was designated as part of the Jewish homeland. The Brits violated the Mandate as well as their own policies for the purpose of placating the Hashemites and preventing them from going to war against the French in Syria. Giving that land to the Hashemites was for appeasement purposes only. It was a consolation prize for the Hashemite brothers losing Syria. Instead, they were handed (or gifted) Jordan and Iraq.
Your comment is so ridicules and XXL delusional.
#9 and #12, Jordan was formed when the UK took about 78% of the Palestine Mandate territory and gave it to the Hashemite family. Under the terms of the Mandate ALL of the land of the Mandate territories were to be part of the Jewish Homeland. If one looks at the coins and banknotes issued by the British from 1927-47 one finds the Hebrew letters Alef-Yud after the word "Palestine in Hebrew. The letters stand for Eretz Yisrael (Land of Israel). I would appreciate anyone telling me where to find coins minted by the "nation" of Palestine prior to 1948. It is hard to find mintage from a "nation" that never existed. The same lies about Al-Aksa were used to spark the progroms of 80 years ago. LEARN HISTORY.
...so typical.
...start somewhere in the early to mid-90's, look at the real history and not some rightwing fantasy, then flash forward to today and see how close Israel is to losing the only two treaties it has with Arab nations, Egypt and Jordan, and read today's news about how Israel is working to entirely alienate Turkey as well. And the Goldstone Report yet awaits...
Jordan actually bent in to US pressure to sign a peace treaty, due to the amount of debt owed, despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of the people (over 80% of whom were descended from Palestinian refugees at the time) would never have agreed. Does Jordan need peace with Israel... The King would gain an enormous amount of respect at home if he ends the treaty. Frankly, short of a sometimes contaminated water supply (I refer back to the more specific incident of Israeli sewage in Jordanian water a few years ago that resulted in a national health crisis) and air space (we save half an hr traveling to Europe if we go directly over Israel) I wouldn't say we have much to lose. Jordan's predominantly Palestinian population has already lost its land and dignity, they could probably put up with losing the few US provided perks.
Jordan is the Palestinian State in the region.
Whether its Egypt or Jordan, Israel will find that its diplomatic efforts have been undermined through, shall we say, a forlorn and unworldly foreign policy emanating from todays Washington. Now its Turkey, another Muslim country that has had excellent relations with Israel in the past. Something is up. Again, one must surmise that all the above countries have concluded that a change in the wind direction has been compounded by a dramatic drop in temperature currently blowing from the Obama Administration vis a vis Israel. Obviously they are wrong. Israel most certainly has changed direction, away from the Olmert distraction into a far more pragmatic approach. Let us remember that the past government only made promises then lead Israel into two wars, mainly through political weakness. Good day from chilly Swiss Alps.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha That's the best pro-Israeli argument I've heard so far!! You're fantastic! Would this be the same Israel that existed over 2000 years ago or some figment of your imagination that existed more recently before Britain renamed Palestine 'Israel'. Either way your argument is very special... I'm sure most Arab, Israeli, non-Arab and non-Israeli's will agree! I look forward to more of your entertaining 'facts'. Really special... Wow!
This is just the tip of the iceberg of the type of relationships with other countries that will suffer under Bibi's watch. Get use to it Israel. You got 3+ more year of his right wing extremist attitudes.
Expelling the Israeli ambassador is a breach of the peace agreement and therefore, it should entail suspension of the water supply to Jordan by Israel.
Mark B, I don't get your point: How could the Brits give Israeli land away in 1922? Israel as a state didn't exist back then? You seem confused...
Jews do NOT need to apologize for their heritage.
Jordan can't afford to lose Israel, the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel is for the interest of Jordan. Jordan is just bluffing.
Moslems must fail to turn Temple Mount like Mecca where only moslems are allowed in .
Messing with the status-quo can only make things worse. Maybe this is what the Arabs want. In fact this is what I believe. The Mugrabi gate was open until the bride to the gate collapsed. Once this bridge if fixed, the previous situation should return to how it was. Unfortunately for Muslims, the Temple Mount is what it is to Jews. Jews do need to apologize for their heritage. Palestinians and others making empty statements and posturing for political gain cannot change history. In 1967 Israel should have kicked the Wakf out of Jerusalem for good, and at the same time kept the site open to Muslim prayer. This was a huge opportunity missed. Muslims need to understand that Jews have compromised by allowing another religion to encamp on their holiest site. This is no small compromise.
Really, what about between 1948 and June 1967, did the Jordanians respect Jewish rights? No Jew was allowed access to the Western Wall. How do you rationalize that?
In 1922, Britain allocated over half of Israel territory to Jordan. This has been illegal act, according to the International Law, and Jordan must return the land back to Israel.
The Israeli authorities prevented right-wing activists from going up to the Temple Mount, and the Arabs stoned a group of tourists. I think the tourists were mainly French Christians, but I could be mistaken. Should the world be condemning the Arabs?
Jordan is absolutely correct in expelling Israeli diplomats for the insults being delivered against Islam at Temple Mount. If Israel cannot respect Islam, how can it expect any Muslim to treat it and its citizens with respect anywhere in the world.
