Report: Jerusalem drops more construction to avoid U.S. tensions

Council cancels discussion on expanding Har Homa, Army Radio reports, due to Netanyahu's visit to Washington.

The Jerusalem municipality has canceled a meeting scheduled for Monday regarding the expansion of a neighborhood in East Jerusalem, according to Army Radio.

The municipality would not explain why it has postponed the meeting, but members of the Jerusalem District Building and Planning Committee told Army Radio that the decision was made to avoid tensions during Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington this week.

The council was supposed to meet to discuss the construction of 12 new housing units and a commercial area in the Har Homa neighborhood, east of the Green Line. Last week, Haaretz learned that the council had taken off its agenda for last two weeks all meetings regarding construction over the Green Line.

The Interior Ministry has said that the meetings were canceled due to technical reasons, as the director of the committee Ruth Yosef had been invited to overlapping Knesset sessions.

Interior Minister Eli Yishai denied then having ordered the committee to change its agenda following the recent crisis with the U.S. - but committee members nevertheless received a new schedule, on which all meetings pertaining to controversial construction areas were erased.

The discussion about Har Homa had been one of the issues on last week's agenda which was canceled in accordance with the new schedule.

While the US continues to stand by Israel against any and all UN resolutions made to comply Israel to actions agreed upon by the rest of the international community, your words belie your obvious latent racism by insinuating the president of Israel's closest ally is an anti-semite Muslim who harbors extremist Islamic ideology. You represent the worst of the Israeli populace and it's people like you that make me most ashamed of being Jewish.

...the council will resume planning and implementation of construction AFTER Bibi's meeting with Obama. Smart move, especially since Obama doesn't have a rightful say in the matter. Hey, if Obama and everybody else who voted for that $700 billion bailout for Wall Street banks aren't losing any sleep over it, why the ruckus over a few apartment buildings? As if Obama didn't have better things to worry about.

let's be honest! the usa is currently under direct control of AIPAC via michelle obamas cousin and rahm emanuel.barack has nothing to say. rahm emanuel has a father who was member of the irgun. irgun was the reason of the founding of the state of israel.nethanjahu is it's prime minister! so...there can not be a crysis cause they are all "family and friends"!there are people in this world which know a LOT about what is really going on...dont try to fool someone smarter than you...that could really backfire!

You invite in a can of worms as the arrogant chameleon revels over his only foreign policy victory: intentionally humiliating the only unconditional ally the US has in the mideast. The others wouldn't even allow overflight in the past.

All of them; roads, sewers, maintenance, everything. Across all of the entirety of Jerusalem. For eternity. All work in Jerusalem will cease. And then every single project no matter how small should be run past Obama for his personal approval. Just like all totalitarian dictators do.

In July 1999, Israeli authorities BURNT one of the last forests in the district of Bethlehem, located on land confiscated from the villages of Beit Sahour and Um Tuba just after the Oslo Accords were signed. The devastated Jebel Abu Ghneim suddenly became Har Homa, established illegally in the district of Bethlehem at great ecological cost.

doha debate this morning- the arab agenda
    • superjew
    • 21.03.10
    • 23:42

This morning, the doha debates were on....there was a panel of 4.....2 on the hamas side, and 2 on the PA side... The only discussion taking place, is how best to get rid of ALL of israel...this is not about gaza and WB, it is about israel INSIDE the green line...israel rightly knows what they are facing...the people here on haarets and elsewhere around the world who THINK this code word "occupation" is about gaza and west bank are either delusional, ill informed, ignorant or anti semitic. It IS that simple. All of you who deny this with this excuse or that excuse simply are avoiding the truth, as time and time again is laid bare from the mouths of the PA, HAMAS, the lebanese, the syrians, the iranians, the saudis etc... What a disgrace the arabs are and by defacto, Obama. Obama KNOWS that the arabs at large are not talking about WB and Gaza, nor about golan or shaaba farms...HE KNOWS and yet he won't come out and say to the arabs, until you accept Israel even INSIDE the green line, we will not engage in a false peace process, and not only that, but we will strengthen israel and strengthen her security. Nabil shaath and abdullah abdullah are on the PA side of this farce called a debate in doha..and BOTH of them are for taking down all of israel. This is the so called moderate side of the palestinians....what they want is perfectly crystal clear. It is a complete joke...if you ask me, israel is being pushed into a false peace, KNOWING that this is a trojan horse. Obama is a real disgrace. He is very consciously using the rise of global anti semitism to push forward with geopolitical realignment and appeasement of the oil rich arabs. I dont call that leadership, I dont call it honest, I dont call it fair, what I do call it is dangerous. Who is the president who will knowingly sacrifice one of his best friends for oil....??? is this what america now stands for? lying? racism? It is PLAIN TO SEE....obama is clearly a weak preisdent who in fact, is more indebted to saudi arabia and their oil that bush ever was...and yet out of the other side of his mouth he says he wants energy independance! I mean, come on, has no one figured out this man? It is just disgusting. He can go to copenhagen to pitch for the olympics but he has no time to go to his best friend israel where the need to address real global peace is so vital...he is supposed to be all about unifying and healing, yet he cant go to israel to speak about the falsehood of anti semitism? he sends a clown like biden but doesn't go himself? that tells you much ......israelis have bled and died to PROTECT universally held values of freedom and tolerance, supposedly american values but obama can't now support these universal values? If the arabs want peace, it's about recognizing israel for now and forever, as a JEWISH HOMELAND, SOVEREIGN, LEGITIMATE. All this other fluff is bullshyte. The whole notion of occupation is a canard...if you ask me, israel should say to obama, Mr. President, unless you come out and speak the truth, we are not interested in one more day of these farcical negotiations. This is not about 1967, it is only about 1948.

At least that what this looks like. Netanyahu is saying, at the same time, that there is no change in Israel's construction policies for Jerusalem which it alone regards as sovereign Israeli land. So what's with these atmospherics? Does Israel think the world (or Obama) can be fooled yet again? I think the time for sleight of hand tricks is long since passed.

So an arsonist is burning down your house, and he sees you crying, and feels bad. He takes a bucket of water and throws it on the raging flames. The water vaporizes in seconds, and the fire rages on. He looks over at you, as if expecting congratulations. When he sees that you are still angry, he says, "well I was trying to be nice, but I guess there's no pleasing you!". This is the level of significance of a 2 week lull in meetings about building over the green line.
