Report: Jane Fonda joins boycott of Toronto film festival over homage to Israel

Lethal Weapon star Danny Glover, Vagina Monologues playwright Eve Ensler join list of protesters.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Israel news

Jane Fonda, Danny Glover and Eve Ensler have joined the growing list of artists who are boycotting the Toronto film festival over a program honoring Tel Aviv's 100th anniversary, gossip blogger Perez Hilton reported on Friday.

The three have added their names to a letter aimed at festival officials claiming that Tel Aviv was built on violence, ignoring the "suffering of thousands of former residents and descendants," Hilton reported.

Several Israeli films are being screened at the festival's new City to City event, which this year celebrates Tel Aviv's centennial.

Culture critic Naomi Klein and director John Greyson are among those who had already announced their protest over the homage to Tel Aviv.

Two-time Oscar winner Rabbi Marvin Hier, who founded the Simon Wiesenthal Center, called the boycott "an attack on the heart and soul of Israel."

"People who support letters like this are people who do not support a two-state solution," he was quoted as saying on Hilton's blog.

"By calling into question the legitimacy of Tel Aviv, they are supporting a one-state solution, which means the destruction of the State of Israel. I applaud the organizers of the festival for celebrating on the 100th anniversary of Tel Aviv. If every city in the Middle East would be as culturally diverse, as open to freedom of expression as Tel Aviv is, then peace would long have come to the Middle East."

Fonda, 72, rose to fame as an actress in the 1960s, but has since become known for her political activism, including her opposition to the Vietnam and Iraq wars.

Glover, who is probably best known for co-starring with Mel Gibson in the four Lethal Weapon movies, has also been politically active since his student days. He made headlines in 2006 when he traveled to Venezuela with a group of celebrities to show solidarity with president Hugo Chavez.

Ensler, whose father is reportedly Jewish, is an American playwright and activist who wrote The Vagina Monologues.

All I see here are knee-jerk reactionaries who refuse to allow the truth to come out...I mean c'mon, personal attacks on Glover, Fonda, et al because they don't agree with you. Within minutes of the attack on Gaza last december 225 lives were lost (lives of men, women and children whose only crime was not being jewish!) I am a father and I condemn any use of violence against non-combatants (Israeli or other)but Israel, with the compliance of the US targeted civilians in their continuing efforts to erase goyim from their "promised land". Not unlike Chamberlain in his efforts to appease Hitler (I'm sure the Czechs felt as neglected as the Palestinians)the world's leaders who turn their back on this carnage while Palestinian children are killed will be vilified by history. Thankfully there are Jews like Ms Klein who adamantly assert: "Not in my name!"

Fonda, Glover, Ensler, et al, have been hoodwinked by propaganda. No "Palestinian villages" were "destroyed" when Tel Aviv was founded; it was built on empty sand dunes, purchased by Jews from the legal Arab owners. Fonda's hasty comeback, that she just "loves Israel" and "the Jewish people" is backpedaling blither.

The boycotts are misdirected, and thus ineffectual. Tel Aviv is probably the very heart of the Israeli peace movement; it is the home of many who favor of the Palestinians making East Jerusalem, Al-Quds, their capital; of those who wish to remove the settlements from the West Bank. The boycott begging to happen is the boycott of right wing politicians and export industries of the settlers. Don't allow RW politicians to visit the West, keep them at home; they only waste our tax money with "gifts for the family". Don't allow them to make right-wing propaganda on prime-time TV. On the contrary, Western news media should be paying a good deal more attention to the peace movements, Israeli and Palestinian than they do. As for Jane, we have brought it on ourselves. Too bad!

These are some for those who needs to know the truth. no place here for the junk called gods promise the land to the jews. zionism is the problem. no matter how long israel going to stay, it will disintegrate by time. if america can stay on the side walk, israel will not continue. Arabs are permanent. Donot hide in the clouds of only democracy, has nothing to do with the reality of what happened in 1948 and thereafter.

The principle of the boycott is not all that far from my views? However, I was personally blown away by Jane Fonda signing her name! OMG, she is probably one of the richest woman capitalists in the world, not in the least probably thanks to her marriage to and divorce from tycoon Ted Turner, and for years she plugged her inane bestselling workout videos (1982-1995). Now, what did that do for the feminist cause? And how can Naomi Klein bear to add her name to the same list with her? How can Fonda fight for equality and the rights of the disenfranchised when she epitomizes exactly the (super-rich) opposite??

In his travels from Jaffa to Cesarea he did not encounter a house or person on the entire route. Beduin robbers prevented settlement along the coast. Your villages are fictitious. Tel Aviv was founded on sand dunes in 1909.

Tel Aviv land which was sand dunes inappropriate for agriculture and lacking water was bought from some Arabs who were jaffa residents. Tel Aviv than expanded to include bought plantations from Arab owners (around 1900-1910). After the 2nd world war it inherited lands of Templers expelled by the British and finally in 1948 some land that was owned by Arabs (Sheikh Munis)that left during the Independence War to the Arab countries. I think that the facts should be set straight before boycotting. If they still feel like boycotting it is their business!

This is exactly what I explained to Smadar without going into chapter and verse about the individual Palestinian villages as you did, although I mentioned the most importannt one, Jaffa. Read my message again, carefully, since I stated that this protest was not about Tel Aviv itself but about the Israeli occupation. You don't seem to find fault with the annexation of those Palestinian villages that you listed and in my opinion, these woul;d have been more than enough for Fonda to join the boycott. You too fell in the same word trap of the title as Smadar.

    • 20:19

Smadar, Walid, Israeli, Danite should know that Jane Fonda et al likely don't even know why they are boycotting the celebration of Tel Aviv's centenary. Here's what they should have explained: There were already several Arab villages in those sand dunes when Tel Aviv was founded. Sheikh Munis (now Tel Aviv University Campus), Salameh (Kfar Shalem), Al-Manshieyyeh, (Dan Panorama/Dolphinarium/Florentine/Shuk HaCarmel) to mention only the largest ones - apart from Jaffa of course which already existed when King David conquered it. Only Jaffa still has Arabs living in it. If these facts had been alluded to in the context of those celebrations Jane Fonda and her friends would be wrong to boycott them. However they have been totally ignored. Until history stops being warped by omission, there can never be peace.

Jewish Defence League of Canada Important Announcement on TIFF Expose and Confront Incitement Against Israel and the Jewish People A protest by haters of Israel, 'filmmakers' and 'artists' opposed to a Toronto International Film Festival program that spotlights Tel Aviv is growing, with plans to hold a press conference Thursday to coincide with the festival's opening. This anti Israel protest is part of an international campaign called 'boycott, divestment and sanctions' or BDS. The purpose of this BDS campaign is to distract attention away from Radical Iran's Nuclear plans and to allow Hamas and Hezbollah to attain more weapons. The Jewish Defence League of Canada will hold a counter protest against the BDS program on Thursday September 10th. The exact time and location will be announced. The Jewish Defence League of Canada is calling upon all decent people to join with us and raise Israel and Canada flags high and proud. Ms. Fonda is known for getting her facts wrong and her loyalties all screwed up. While her country men were being shot out of the sky she celebrated the gun crews who were doing the shooting. Claiming as she and others did that Tel Aviv was established on the blood of "suffering" arabs is not only a destortion of historical facts, but neglects certain "inconvenient" facts sch as 1. Tel Aviv was built on sand dunes in early 1900s, dunes nobody wanted and 2. Jaffa tied to conquer Tel Aviv in 1947 and failed. Ms Fonda should have been prosecuted for giving aid to the enemy in the 1960s and held up for redicule as an old stupid woman who should learn some history before she opens her mouth.

Just goes to show how anti-Israel anti-Semitism has become the fashion in far leftist Hollywood. Let's see how they do going forward, getting new film projects, and anything else in Hollywood. Not too great I'd bet. Jane Fonda is already hated by Viet Nam vets and now all the rest will join in. She has an inflated sense of her power and intelligence. Once just a soft porn actress, now she's an aged soft porn actress insisting on causing hatred for others via uninformed silly alligations. Danny Glover believes 9-11 was an inside job. Your history was only partially right. It's true about the Palestinians having chased the Christians out of the Damour but it was about 3 years later that Sabra-Shatilla occurred during the occupation and with the help of the Israelis. It was supposedly done to avenge the assassination of the Christian leader and Israeli ally, Bachir Gemayel, with whom the Israelis had stopped waltzing. Some say Bachir was killed by the Syrians but the majority believe it was by the Israelis to finish off the camp Palestinians after the others had been put on boats to Tunis. You are right though about Lebanon not having a rosy picture either. Everyone being guilty does not justify anything.

Now that the Israelis built up one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities, the Arab sympathizers open their mouths. If it wasn't for the Jewish pioneers, Tel Aviv would still be sand dunes.

Damur. Ring a bell? That was a Christian city at the outskirts of Beirut with 20,000-50,000 thriving Christians. The PLO and its Muslim allies slaughtered the population; the rest fled. The city laid in ruins; `moonscaped` would be fitting. I was there after the act to witness this shocking sight. (this is BTW why Christians took revenge of PLO at Sabra and Shatila). So no film about Beirut until the city is built, guilty brought to justice, and compensation is extended to the survivors. Remember, everyone is guilty. They just have to stop accusing others.

No Jew should draw pleasure from seeing Israel reduced to a pariah state. Israel can survive without East Jerusalem, without the Golan Heights and without the West Bank, but it cannot survive without goodwill from at least a portion of the world. Those who believe otherwise do not help Israel, rather they are helping to kill it. They are just as dangerous as Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran.

The fuss is not about Tel Aviv, no question a Jewish-built city but about Palestinian towns like Jaffa that were annexed by it and had vestiges of their Palestinian past along with their names erased. As such, you can say that TA was built on the ruins of SOME Palestinian villages and this takes away from TA's nice image you are projecting. Klein and the others are not boycotting the festival because they are against TA or Israel but against what Israel is doing. Fonda was one of the biggest supporters of Israel until she realized what was happening; I was happy to learn that my daughter had refused free tickets to the festival in support of the boycott. You erroneously think this is an anti-TA boycott; it's against the Israeli occupation. The wrong title of this article is throwing everybody off and like the others, you were tripped by it.

It wasn't her "opposition" that the war that Fonda is infamous for - but rather her propaganda trip to Hanoi during the war where she was a dupe for the Commies. She opposed the war, but also made ignorant comments that the American POWs weren't being tortured, and had herself photographed on an anti-aircraft gun as if she were shooting at American planes. She eventually expressed regret for her stupidity, but the damage has been done and her reputation has been set: Fonda doesn't do her homework and probably knows nothing about Palestinian human rights atrocities and war crimes. When was the last time she was here? 20 something years ago when the Soviets released Ida Nudel? Has she been here since, or simply gets her news from unknown sources?

The World sat by idly while thousands of bodies were shoveled into graves never to be found again. Yet the world also allowed homes and buildings to be built on the ruins of Jewish homes over the past 2,000 years. Please don't waste our intelligence on your idiotic remarks. The other issue is that the Toronto Film FEstival should not be used as a political forum for every thing Israel or JEws have accomplished. Jane Fonda aidsx and abetted North Vietnamese who were killing U.S. soldiers and Danny Glover's hero is the dictator Hugo Chavez. Eve Ensler and Naomi Klein are Jews who despise their own people. By boycotting Israel in this manner they are declaring themselves against the State of Israel. This is not a protest about Judea and Samaria but about 1948 Israel and it is imperative that Jews everywhere boycott those who deny the existence of Israel which these people are doing.

    • 18:27

The Toronto Film Festival's honouring of Israel's centre of commerce and culture, Tel Aviv, for its 100 year anniversary should be a celebrated event. In 1930, Tel Aviv was a small town of only 20,000 inhabitants with very little settlement and minimal paved roads. The Jewish people bought the mainly marsh land to build the city to what it is today. Where Anti-Semitism was prevalent globally, this was one place considered a haven for Jews to escape and flourish as their cultural capital of the modern State of Israel. People are confusing the disputed settlements established after 1967 in the West Bank to the establishment of Tel Aviv. It's also useful to remind critics that there are archeological sites all over Israel where on top of synagogues were built churches and on top of churches mosques.

Jane Fonda at 72 and Danny glover at any age won't be missed we order top rate stars in Toronto More importantly though "Tel Aviv built on violence" maybe it's the Zionist narrative but wasn't twl aviv built from nothing. Wasn't it built by the first settlers long before 48 in early 1900s.

Even though she's a has-been & her roles are fewer & fewer she still collects royalties from old films, so if you must see a Fonda film, rent it out wait for it to come out on cable. The fact that she joins other repulsive actors such as Glover in the boycott show how narrow-minded she is. Tel Aviv was built alongside the mostly arab city of Jaffa, not over it & Israel's existence has brought many economic benefits to all arabs in the region. Israeli-arabs enjoy a much higher standard of living than most arabs & receive higg-quality education & healthcare.

Does anyone really know of anyone whose property actually got stolen. I mean this absolute hooey about keys to doors being the only proof of ownership or stories of people who say their properties led from mountains to the sea is utter nonsense. If anyone looks at a photo of the first pioneers of Tel Aviv, all they would see is those same pioneers standing in front of their own shacks, and sandunes in the background. Far from stealing the land of Arabs they were trading and interacting with them. All we are talking about are uneducated celebrities that fall for the usual drivel from bleeding hearts who themselves are unaware of any facts.

a news reel of her masturbating on a north Vietnamese artillery piece ,wearing a helmet. As for Danny Glover his claim to fame were his Mel Gibson lethal weapon movies and after the passion of the christ and his anti semitic father i don't watch those movies hence no Glover. As for Ensler his father was Jewish, so he probably isn't and if he thinks he is he is probably a self hating Jew

Well, what else do you expect? Israel's image around the world is not that of a saint. Israel can't expect to act with impunity, defiance and arrogance and have everyone around the world genuflect in its presence.

The petition claims that Tel-Aviv was built on the destroyed Arab villages. Interpretation: Jews were expelling Arabs even before the creation of Israel. One must be seriously sick to sign this nonsense.

Hypocrites the lot of them. Was America not built on violence? Her ancenstors slaughtered the red indians. Shame on you shmucks for critisizing us for what he have tried to do in a more humane way. Especially when we had a 2000 year old claim to that land.

The protestors seem to forget who started the violence on the day the United Nations approved the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. They also forget how the Palestinian populace rejoiced in the streets at the news of the horrible crimes committed in the US on September 11, 2001. They also forget all the airplane highjackings of the past, the school bus bombings, the suicide killers in restaurants, the daily shelling of civilian areas lasting for years. Did the Israelis, even in retaliation, commit anything approaching these horrors? Not to my knowledge & the knowledge of unbiased observers.

If nothing in Jerusalem could be built on what was a cemetery hundreds and more years ago, there would be no buildings. Jerusalem has been inhabited for about 5,500 years!

Just Googled this guy and, of course, he's linked to the whole Jerusalem Museum of Tolerance controversy. You know, the one that's supposed to promote Tolerance among Jewish communities but seems less interested in tolerance of Arabs, whether they're dead ones or live ones. Go away and consider your own conscience Rabbi, before preaching at others.

Jane Fonda is an old woman that once she was an actress with talent. Since all that she has now is her mouth without much brain, I would not take her seriously. She is part of a group of people that due to a sunset fame wants to stay still in the spot. I do not know what is her formal education, but she is older than the state of Israel, and if she did care about the world and was reading newspapers - that I doubt, she was able to remember the historical facts.
