Report: Islamic Jihad to stop rocket fire on Israel

Spokesman for the militant group says, however, that it would respond if Israel attacks Gaza.

By Haaretz Service Tags: Hamas Gaza Israel news Islamic Jihad

Islamic Jihad on Sunday announced that it would cease firing rockets into Israel, Channel 10 news reported.

An Islamic Jihad spokesman, Daoud Shihab, made the announcement in an interview on Islamic Jihad radio, during which he reportedly said the militant group, "stopped the rocket fire into Israel for internal Palestinian purposes - first and foremost to help end the siege on the Gaza Strip."

According to the Channel 10 report, Shihab went on to say that Islamic Jihad does not intend to reverse this decision, but clarified that "if Israel once again attacks Gaza, no one will be able to prevent the resistance operatives from responding to the attacks."

An anonymous Islamic Jihad official later denied the attacks would stop, according to Israel Radio.

A senior Egyptian official involved in brokering past truces between Gaza militant groups and Israel said in a statement that the Egyptians had on Sunday stepped up diplomatic pressure on both parties to reduce tensions in the coastal strip.

"Egypt has conducted extensive calls at the highest level with both Israel and the Palestinian factions to contain the escalating tension in the Gaza Strip in order to prevent a deterioration of the situation," the official said.

On Sunday night Gaza militants fired a Qassam into Israel, which hit an open area in the northwestern Negev area. There were no casualties and no damage was done. The attack comes after both Islamic Jihad and Hamas have said they will try to reduce rocket attacks against Israel.

Hamas spokesman Ayman Taha on Friday told the BBC that Hamas is working to curb rocket attacks against Israel by Gaza militants.

"The government in Gaza is in charge of the situation, and it does know clearly who launches rockets," Taha told the BBC. "It is working hard to deter any faction from acting individually."

Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged Hamas politburo chief Khaled Meshal to stop militants in the Gaza Strip from firing rockets against Israel.

Lavrov made his request in a telephone conversation, which, according to Russian news agencies, covered a variety of issues regarding the Middle East.

The Russian foreign minister told Meshal that the recent increase in rocket fire was unacceptable.

Meshal responded by reiterating Hamas' declared stance that it was not interested in an escalation of tensions with Israel and would continue to try to maintain calm in the area.

However, days later, on Saturday, Meshal said that all options against Israel remain open, including war, according to Channel 10 news.

"We will do everything to obtain the rights stolen from us, including confrontation with the enemy," said.

You are wrong. Even after the revolt was put down, the majority of Israel's inhabitants were Jews. Here are some historical facts for you to consider: 1) The Mishnah was composed in Israel C. 192 A.C.E. 2) The Jerusalem Talmud was likewise composed in Israel around 150 years after that. 3) There was a Jewish school in Caeseria 4) At the time that the Mishnah was composed, the majority of the olive groves belonged to Jews 5) The office of Nasi [poloitical leader of the Jews in Israel] existed untill the very end of the 4th century 6) After the Arabs comquered Israel, there continued to be a Jewish synagogue in Jerusalem. (It's now a water cistern that services the Dome of the Rock) 7) When the Arabs built a mosque on the temple Mount, they considerately built it outside the Temple area. (The Al-Aksa mosque currently stands on the Temple Mount, but outside the actual area of the Temple. The Dome was originaly built as a shrine, not a mosque)

Most of the Jews left behind after the last Jewish revolt in 135.AD [that's the vast majority of them] either Christianized under the Byzantines or later on Islamized after the Arab invasion. A few of the devout remained as Jews and some left but most stayed-just not very many as Jews. So the `who was first; Jews or Muslims` debate is wrongheaded as it presupposes two monolithic bodies of people. A romanticised ideal, and entirely unhistorical.

Your attitude reflects why attaining peace is so difficuly. You sy that Israel 'squeezed' out of Arafat a recognition of the country as if there is something wrong with that. It is the basic minimum that one would expect. That you think it is such a big concession is the problem. What about the fact the Israel recognizsd a murderous, terrorist organization as representative of the Palestinians? Maybe that is the problem!

    • 15:34

This is a great step in the right direction. Things will improve for Israelis and Gazans alike if Hamas and Islamic Jihad are able to stop the rocket attacks entirely. It's hard to negotiate peace with someone firing rockets into your country - just like its hard to make peace with a country that keeps stealing more and more land. If the rockets do stop, the Israelis should respond with a real construction freeze on the West Bank and a lessening of the stranglehold on Gaza. Positive reinforcement increases good behavior more than punishment. If the Gazans give Israel cause for hope, the Israelis should do the same.

The weapons cache thing is new. Hamas has never had such things before when Israel attacked. Someone is actually giving them some weapons. Last time the casualty score in Gaza was 14 IDF losses 1400 civilian losses 100:1 Probably in the next invasion the IDF will not get off so lightly. Though they can easily continue the 100:1 ratio, since the civilians in Gaza are so defenseless. Israel does not allow them to have concrete to build air raid shelters which Israel classifies as Hamas bunkers.

You may find this uncomfortable MS Kohn, but every human being has a right to defend themselves - even Muslims! If Israel returns the land and homes stolen from the Palestinians, then you can rightly expect them to stop firing rockets across in Protest. But, until then, any human being will defend their property from thieves - the Palestinians have very few avenues of protest and even lawful and peaceful ones are met with tear gas and rubber bullets. The fact that you are blind to this injustice is very sad indeed.

The world is more scared of Israel madness. The Palestinians are naive. Israel doesn't want peace, no negotiation except to squeeze something from the Palestinians. They did so to get Arafat to recognize Israel, to Abbas to kick out the elected Hamas, while the only concession to Abbas is to protect him from Palestinian dissent and to keep him in power even though his mandate has expired two years ago.

The government in Gaza is in charge... Taha said. So someone needs to ask... there were 35 rockets fired in March alone, including one yesterday. As of April of 2010... is Gaza militarily better-of then they were in February. Has this tactic produced the desired result. Since Hamas clearly knows who launches rockets and they are totally in charge... are they aware that this rocket-fire is a clear Provocation of War. What other country on this planet would allow this to continue. Would Russia, China or the United States permit such military provocation. Of course Israeli policies and the siege agitates the situation. But at some point, someone from Hamas needs to be accountable... in the very least to it's own population.

Why is Golan a discussion for peace?? The Syrians attacked Israel. Israel in Return fought back. Syrians were pushed back and they lost thier Real Estate. In addition Israel must keep it for security reasons since Syria attacked Israel. When there is WAR and blood is lost in WAR you can`t return the land that was lost in WAR for peace if it helps defend your country. Syria cant expect Israel to just give it back. You cant eat the whole pie. Its one sided for Syria, What if Israel lost the WAR whould Syria return land back? You cant attack and loose a WAR then request land back for peace. Syria never thought they would loose this land. Today its strategic for Israel to keep this land to defense itself. Why should Israel take a chance to give it back and place itself in a voulnerable position??

lull  (ll) v. lulled, lull·ing, lulls v.tr. 1. To cause to sleep or rest; soothe or calm. 2. To deceive into trustfulness: "that honeyed charm that he used so effectively to lull his victims" (S.J. Perelman). v.intr. To become calm. n. 1. A relatively calm interval, as in a storm. 2. An interval of lessened activity: a lull in sales. [Middle English lullen, possibly of Low German origin.] Now I hope it's the first, because of the second guarantees are needed, the third is ok, the fourth and fifth however are iffy as they do carry the notion of further increase
