Report: Iran to cross nuclear threshold in three years

CBS quotes U.S. military report as claiming Tehran is closer to bomb than previously believed.

By Haaretz Service

A new U.S. military intelligence assessment claims Iran could have a nuclear weapon by 2010, CBS reported on Friday.

Iranian scientists have recently overcome difficulties which may enable Tehran to be in possession of a nuclear bomb three years earlier than previously thought, the report postulated.

However, the uranium enrichment plant currently under construction will have to become operational ahead of time in order for Tehran to create a nuclear bomb.

In response to the report, a leading nuclear expert, David Albright, warned against underestimating Iranian nuclear expertise.

The data on the slow shrinkage of the Martian polar icecaps was obtained by orbiting spacecraft, and reported in "Nature" magazine, Alicia My uncle, who lives in the Martian Central Zone, confirms this.

"Although the oceans are releasing CO2, we are doing it at a far greater extent." No we're not. Mankind pumps about 7 million metric tonnes of CO2 into the air each year. Volcanoes, organic decay and the oceans release 150,000 million metric tonnes a year. As temperature rises the oceans are releasing increasingly more than mankind. Charts that plot global temperature and CO2 changes show that CO2 increases lag BEHIND temperature changes. It is temperature that is leading to CO2 increases rather than the other way round. The cause of global warming is increased activity on that great ball of fire in the sky known as the sun, surprise, surprise.

Mark, you're right about the insults to Musharaf. What's even scarier is that Pakistan is the breeding ground of Sunni wahabi fundamentalists (the ideological camp of bin laden and co). And musharaf's reign is kept in place by a strand of hair. For 3 decades the same stupid policies and shortsight visions have strangthen the mullah's regime in tehran. Our Politicians from across the spectrum lack the basic insight, the simple rule of trial and error principle in cognitive learning. Even a toddler learns if you touch fire, you'll get burned. That's the nature of fire. These people fan the flames of fundamentalism and they cry 'why does it burn'? DUH...That bastard bin laden was made and groomed by the Reagan admin (back then the boogie man was russia). You can't sleep with the devil and expect a healthy baby.

"Happy to discuss, although it is amusing to see who you are aligning yourself with ." I know, Jim - it was truly horrifying to find myself in agreement with the Boneheaded Bush on this. Human CO2 production is only the tiniest fraction of all the CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere annually by all other sources and is not the cause of the warming that is undoubtedly taking place. If you check the charts plotting CO2 against temperature you'll find it's a lagged effect, with CO2 increases lagging BEHIND temperature increases. As tenperature increases, the seas release more CO2. You did see, did you, Jim, that Nature report that showed that the icecaps on Mars were also shrinking very slowly (and this isn't a reference to the normal seasonal shrinking and expansion that takes place)? The Global Warming Industry is a vast, profitable, growing and politically correct one.

Human are also releasing tons of CO2. More than in any time in history. CO2 heats up the planet, so where do you think the CO2 that humans are releasing is going? Although the oceans are releasing CO2, we are doing it at a far greater extent. You can't treat the planets atmosphere as a the worlds waste dump and not have an effect on the planet. There is not historical precedent for your theory, of the 123 scientific articles written on the issue over 95 percent attributed it to human activity, zero were written attributing it to natural causes. You find many people debating the facts but the real debate is science, if a theory is sound then a scientific study is normally conducted and published for peer review..this has never been done in recent history, those that were done in past have been discredited.

Because so did Ahmadinejad when he made his much-misquoted speech. He stated that everyone is wrong in thinking zionism is a permanent feature of the M.E., pointing out that everyone thought exactly the same about communism in the USSR. And then when the soviet regime suddenly collapsed everyone said how inevitable it was. Ahmadinejad then quoted Khomani saying the same must inevitably happen to "the regime occupying Jerusalem". Just like you just did regarding Iran. Be careful, Nora, or people will start misquoting you too, and insisting you are calling for Iran to be "wiped off the map"....

He is also very bright, which is not what you can say about the man in the White House. And despite the drumbeats, the American public is not ready for another war and Iran has already said it would attack where it hurts most,SHOULD IT BE ATTACKED. And because of the geopolitics of the region(see my earlier post) neither Israel(which would very much like to attack Iran) nor America will actually make that serious blunder. Iran is NOT Iraq.

    • 14:28

At the end of the day, Russians, Chinese, Israelis and Americans all want to survive. For the fundamentalist Iranians martydom is the desire and there is no better way to martydom than destroying Israel. At every rally the Iranian president orchestrates chants of death to America, death to Israel and death to the UK. In a country where demonstrations are carefuly manipulated this reflects the beliefs of both the Iranian people and president. They actively support suicide bombing of civilians, execution of Bahai pacifists and hanging of homosexuals. So spyguy there is a difference. With Iran the concept of mutually assured destruction is lost.

than Russia, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel, the US or any of the other "Nuclear Club." Iran is less of a threat to the world than many other countries around the world. The leadership in Iran is no more insane than the leadership of Israel or the US. When Iran gets nukes they will be just as responsible as the US, Pakistan and the other nuclear powers (definitely much more stable than North Korea). If you want to be worried about nukes, then be worried about Pakistan which ALREADY has nukes and the ability to deliver them to Israel. All it would take is a simple change in government like Osama Bin Laudin taking over, for the missiles to be launched. Why aren't you demonizing Pakistan?

Imagine France saying that they would like to wipe England off the map and actually mean it - would you not be slightly concerned in sunny Sussex? The thought of a statement so aggressive is beyond me - showing how far Iran needs to come on before having the responsibility of nuclear power. I personally think that Iran would not go as far as doing something so stupid but they are not exactly helping their cause? Do you not think that Iran has anything to answer for in this scenario? Lets hope that the Americans will learn their lesson from the disaster in Iraq. I do however, have this worrying feeling that they never learn from ANY of thier mistakes and fear a repetion of the current mess we are all in...

Can we ask when did Israel cross the threshold of Nuclear armament? It is not whether Iran should or should not have nuclear power and whether they need it; it is also to ask the question whether Israel should or should not have nuclear power and whether they need it. These are fair questions that require fair answers. And we should not keep using the Iran issue to cover up the apartheid in Palestine. The Palestians are being treated quite like slaves and it is abhorring to think that Israel, who knows too well how it feels to be subjugated as a people, should be dehumanizing the people of Palestine in their own land. Why can't Israel live up to its democratic values in Palestine?

    • Clickfool
    • 27.04.07
    • 10:44

The world is indeed warming up slowly, but human CO2 production is not the causal factor. The sun is in one of its regular, normal, cyclical periods of high activity (characterised by many sunspots). Enhanced solar wind is driving away from the earth the background cosmic radiation which normally hits the planet. Cosmic rays are critical because they lead to cloud formation. With marginally fewer cosmic rays hitting the earth, marginally fewer clouds are being formed, with the result that the sun is warming the earth more, very slowly. This is what we are now witnessing. With the earth's temperature rising, the seas are releasing more CO2. The temperature rise is CAUSING the rise in CO2, not the other way round. It is all perfectly normal and has been seen many times in the earth's history. In medieval, pre-industrial England there were vineyards all over the South. The ice caps on Mars are also slowly melting (not the usual seasonal shrinking & expanding).

A big problem, when you see it from the Swedish "blue eye" point of view, is that if we all in the world is making a big issue of the global warming then should it be wise to consider going from oil to nuclear power instead? Shouldn?t that be in our all interest? I mean sun power in Iran instead of oil? Reality? But everything is falling apart when ?Iran talks? about wiping Israel from the map. That was too clear for us here in Nordic countries that something is not right with Iran. Why? But we have to get rid of the oil, if that?s the global warming problem. So, nuclear power then? So be it, but we have to control it together! Open mind folks! /Nordic guy

Only half the story - 2015 still official US estimate

    • 07:38

As of Last update - 06:56 27/04/2007 only half the story is being told to Haaretz readers. Go to the CBSnews site and you will see that 3 years applies only to the enrichment of weapons grade uranium, not the completion of an actual weapon. Much less a weapon that could be delivered to Israel. When it comes to the actual date of completing a weapon, "there is no change in the official estimate that it will take Iran until 2015 to become a nuclear power." according to the full CBS News story. With that said, I'm not convinced the 2015 date is valid, considering that the very first estimate for Iran having a nuclear weapon was made in the 60's, and they estimated Iran would have nukes by 1970, 1980 at the latest. We've been told dates in the 80's, 90's, right up to right now in 2007. None of those estimates have been right. Why would 2010 or 2015 estimate be any more accurate than the rest of the estimates made over the last 5 decades that were all wrong?

This is just more "war propaganda" from the Bush folks. The simple reality is Iran will get nuclear enrichment capability sooner or later, no matter how much the US and Israel whine. If the US and Israel force the issue, Iran will buy nuclear weapons capability from someone else. It is long past the time for Israel to face the reality that Iran will get nuclear capability and learn to deal rationally with the new "facts on the ground." Forcing a war that Israel WILL LOSE, is not the answer. It is time for the leadership in Israel to find an exit strategy from the 60 year war Israel has created, since an escalation will be suicidal for Israel. Sure, Israel won he past battles, but it will lose any future battles and the war.
