Report: Hamas chief survived two earlier assassination attempts

Dubai autopsy: Mabhouh was drugged with a muscle relaxant and suffocated to make death look natural.

By Haaretz Service and Reuters Tags: Israel Mossad Israel news

Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, who was killed last month in a Dubai hotel, faced two previous assassination attempts in recent years, Hamas officials said, according to a report Sunday on Channel 2 news.

Mabhouh was poisoned last year and, previously, was the target of a shooting in Lebanon, Abu Dhabi-based newspaper the National reported on Friday.

Mabhouh was found dead in his Dubai hotel room on January 20 in what police say they are almost certain was a hit by Israel's Mossad spy agency.

The National report said Mabhouh was half-conscious when he was admitted to hospital last May and was treated for dizziness, but had no fever. X-rays showed Mabhouh had a lung infection and was treated with antibiotics. He was released on May 10.

"We always lived with the possibility that Mabhouh could be killed at any time due to the sensitivity of his job," Osama Hamdan, a senior Hamas official in Lebanon and a relative of Mabhouh, told the National.

Meanwhile, Dubai police on Sunday said Mabhouh's killers drugged him before suffocating him.

The killers used a muscle relaxant to tranquillize Mabhouh before suffocating him, said deputy police chief Khamis al-Mazeina, quoted by the Dubai police website.

"The assassins used this method so that it would seem that his death was natural as there were no signs of resistance shown by the victim," he said.

Dubai authorities have named 26 alleged members of the team that tracked and killed the Palestinian and said they operated in disguise and used fraudulent British, Irish, French, German and Australian passports.

People with the same names as many of the suspects live in Israel and say their identities were stolen. The passport abuse has drawn criticism from the European Union, and some of the governments involved have summoned the Israeli ambassadors to their countries to protest.

Israel has not denied or confirmed it played any role but Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman has said there was nothing to link Israel to the killing.

On Saturday, Dubai's chief of police called on Mossad director Meir Dagan to "be a man" and admit that Israel's espionage agency was behind the January 20 assassination.

So a weapons smuggler and murderer is dead it turns out he also used fake passports that nobody is outraged about. Only if Israel does it(fake passports) is it a point of Outrage as we all know. Now the cause of death is changing, again. How many times is that? Looks like Dubai may need to change the facts to suit the outcome. Let's we also are up to a 26 man hit team, sure we all buying that. At the end of the day who cares? Unless of course your an anti-Israel writer with an ax to grind. The real story is infighting or a major penetration of Hamas security. My money is on infighting.

One of the positives of these forums is that it serves as a lithmus test for anti semitism in the world and you are a clear sign of the times of at least onesided anti Israel and Jewishness at the least. So please answer Chris the CIA uses always the true identies of their agents when abroad or they have fake id's? And you think Mabhoub travelled with his own passport? If not shut up and treat Jews equally as goyiem and demand immediately that ever secret service and criminal should use his own personal id when committing a crime or being on a mission.

    • 01.03.10
    • 07:17

Ben, you are far too smart to start making excuses for the forensic sloppiness of the Dubai police chief's running commentaries to the media. The Dubai police chief did NOT "formulate hypotheses" as to what caused Mabhouh`s death. He reported the alleged electrocution and poisoning as facts on the basis of which he said he was "99% certain" (recently upgraged to 100%) that Mossad was to blame. And that is the way his views have been reported around the world. If the Dubai police chief had been humble enough to characterise his florid descriptions of the cause of death as mere "hypotheses", and to speak in the clinical and detached manner of your post, you would have a point. You and I both know that is not the way the police chief spoke.

It's the use of the passports stupid, which is being investigated by Germany, France, Australia, Ireland andf the United Kingdom. Hopefully one of them is about to make a move which will also require the others to act. Otherwise the message to the international community will be that those country's which say and do nothing assent to Mossad using their passports for the purpose of murder. Now go and what the ice nhockey, and leave the lateral thinking to those who don't wear their underpants over their trousers.

Five Nations to investigate what actually happened is a ridiculous waste of time and manpower. There are more important things in this world that need to be addressed in order to save lives. In all likelihood Mr. M's travel goals were not for the purpose of collecting cash relief for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. The Hamas commander should have known better than to provide the coordinates of his whereabouts. It was a mistake, and usually people who make mistakes, no matter how serious, suffer the consequences of their actions. So the Mossad killed Mabhouh, but the only ones arrested so far are Palestinians, of which two are Fatah members. Not only that, but the assassins escaped into Iran -- according to Dubai polic. Is Ahmadinejad also a Mossad member? Would the Mossad leave a trail leading to private Israeli citizens therefore endangering their lives just to kill one terrorist? Remember, this is a country that will free hundreds of terrorists to get one kidnapped Israeli back. Fatah has the technical ability to pull off a plan like this and create a false trail to Israel, and so far only Fatah members have been arrested. Hamas also has that ability, which would make more sense as the killers escaped into Iran. It is not too hard to believe that Mabhouh could have been killed by rivals within Hamas.

I just love how the figures keep growing on how many assassins were required to take out one lone Hamas terrorist. I also get a chuckle over how desperate Hamas and Islamic terrorism is to attempt to malign and paint an evil face on what is otherwise common fare in the world of espionage. Dangerous people are removed with extreme prejudice everywhere. It's just that the Muslims whine more than everyone else about it, and are increasing their efforts to denegrate Israel as if it were a terribly wrong or bad thing that they did. I couldn't be more happy and proud of Israel, especially the Mossad. The world has been a great service by the removal of such trash from this planet. Hamas has no good purpose in mind, and must be dealt with accordingly. Congratulations to Israel's chain of command and all involved with their wonderful accomplishment! We all are breathing a sign of relief and the world is now a safer place...all in increments. Keep up the good work!!!

    • 17:23

The Prophet tells us: "...er, what happened to the findings of electrocution or poisoning? Dubai's keystone kops (sic ba) seem to change their story more often thn they change their socks." The Dubai police formulated hypotheses as to what caused Mabhouh's death. One of the first was that he was electrocuted and then suffocated, making it look as if he died of natural causes. In the light of the toxicology report findings (succinylcholine chloride or suxamethonium chloride, a neuromuscular blocking agent inducing muscle paralysis, commonly used in anaesthesia, was found in the victim's blood) the hypothesis can be adjusted. This agent must be administered intramuscularly or intravenously (quicker than i.m.) and therefore the subject needs to be restrained or knocked out briefly. An electric shock will do that. After the suxamethonium was given the only thing needed was to smother the victim gently with a pillow. Makes it look like death from natural causes.

I think they are having a hard time nailing down those responsible. In act of desperation and to save face the police chief wants Netanyahu and Dagan and say they ordered the operation that the Dubai authorities have no evidence to link Israel. What a primitive idiot. Move on and continue building your luxury hotels and buildings dont worry about the death of an arch terrorist. I am sure that the Dubai police are a reputable force but they need to stop talking to the media about the case till they sit down and restudy all the evidence. Right now since the body was found they have changed their reports of how and why at least 5 times. This is not professional and I think it is due to pressure from the media to come to a conclusion. A conclusion that it was mossad. Whichever person or group of persons did it...it was a real professional job considering all the cameras and security. Yes it could have been mossad but it could have been another group of people...after all this guy was living in a tough underworld. If it was mossad then they have let it be known that their fingers are long enough to get rid of those that do bad to Israel.

I don't understand what the big deal is. First, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was a murder by his own words. Second, like it or not Israel is a country recognized by the United Nations. Palestine is not a country. Third, Mahmoud was a admitted member of Hamas. He is not a freedom fighter since he has no country to fight for and that makes him a terrorist under international law. Most importantly, Hamas is recognized as a terrorist?s organization that is at war with Israel. Where does it say that a country can?t kill their enemy? Why are we crying about the death of a Murder? The funny part about this is no one really looked at the pictures of the people that killed him. They sure look like Americans to me. None of them are from the Middle East. Look at them real close. Sure smells like CIA to me.

Now let's move on to Nasrallah, Ahmedinijab, Mashal, and the other terrorists who would murder Jews, Palestinians, and anybody else who does not buy into their craziness.

Lets put the facts straight : Dubai was harboring a disgusting, murderous terrorist and they should explain why they were doing this. Are they supporting terrorism ? On that case they should be put on the list of countries supporting terrorists and be subject to strict international sanctions.

Typical Israeli attitude; shut up world, sweep it under the rug and make believe it never happened, just like you pretend we don't possess nuclear weapons, and look the other way when we murder innocent Palestinians.

What a pity and a big bluff. The chief of police should ?be a man? and come up with some evidence linking this issue to the Mossad. So far it has been just bla bla bla and pure media stunt. Just imagine, it took them over ten days to figure out that the terrorist was murdered. I guess that top rated star hotel does not keep its rooms clean enough, considering that DNA was found at the least 10 days after the incident.

pretty much the same way they blame Israel for what they suppose they have done ( of course, without any proof) Dubai is now known as the "keystone cops" for their prowess in criminal investigation. Question, why did the man go there w/o any protection? Did Dubai set him up? Answer, Dubai is too embarrassed to admit that their security has failed and that they were monumentally HAD. Whoever did it planned it brilliantly, no one will be caught. It may happen again... Stay tuned.

....other serious matters. The Chief of Police continuously keeps up appearances in the media. Strange enough, the International Media, those that report facts, have ceased all further speculation from this camera hugging fellow. After all, as many have said,..except the hysterical or panicked ones, that no way, will Israel send in a special Unit comprising of 26 plus tennis players, using so many passports and smiling to the cameras, leaving as alledged, retinal and now DNA evidence. Now, we have an autopsy. CSI Dubai, indeed. Soon enough they will find a "Made in Israel" bottle of some drug, hidden under the bed. Meanwhile, the good people of both Chile and Haiti are suffering beyond the limits of human endurance. Good day from stormy Swiss Alps.

and that is why the Israeli`s said that this will not stop international cooperation against terrorism. Also terrorists who have moved about without fear in Muslim dominated countries will think again... Consider the timing of this too. It took place before a scheduled meeting between terror linchpins in Iran were to gather and discuss how to implement their hostilities against Israel and Western interests. Deterrence against a belligerent Persian regime that is looking to gain control over the Middle East continuing (not starting) with Israel. Arab countries are already infiltrated by Iranian trained and supported militia. Is anyone even curious what this Hamas individual was doing in Dubai aside from taking in the sun? Perhaps that is too depressing to consider...

The anesthetic referred to is succinylcholine and it stops breathing by paralysing (or "relaxing") the bodies muscles (including the chest muscles through which one breathes i.e. the intercostals). It follows that: 1) suffocation by manual means would be unnecessary (after all, he wouldn't be breathing) and 2) if he was paralysed how on earth did he "resist" their efforts to suffocate him? And if there was clear evidence that he resisted, why did it take the Dubai police 10 days to realise that he had been killed? The credibility of the Dubai police is in tatters; it would be amusing if it was not so pathetic.

Im sick of hearing new versions of how this terrorist died, i dont care, and anyone who thinks that the Dubai "police" is going to catch anyone is ignorant they have no clue, the pictueres were distorted, the fingerprints wre obviously fake and and the Dubai police chief's manhood is hurt he feels small so he is telling Dagan to be a man. Mr Tamim, you be a man and admit you have no evidence of anything and resign.
