Report: Dubai has lead in assassination of top Hamas man

Report comes as security official says wouldn't rule out chance that Mossad was behind January 20 killing.

Dubai police have a lead in the investigation of the assassination of Hamas strongman Mahmoud al-Mabhouh earlier this week, the London-based newspaper Al-Hayat reported Saturday.

The report comes as the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera television quoted a senior Dubai security official as saying that he wouldn't rule out the possibility that Israeli intelligence was behind the January 20 assassination. Al-Mabhouh is believed to have been involved in the abduction and murder of two Israelis soldiers in 1989.

In another possible attempt to tie Israel with al-Mabhouh's assassination, On Friday, top Hamas official Mahmoud al-Zahar told Al Jazeera that it was possible that members of the entourage of an Israeli ministry were involved in the incident.

In the interview, al-Zahar said it was possible people using fake names and foreign passports had entered Dubai with National Infrastructure Minister Uzi Landau, who visited an energy conference in Dubai almost two weeks ago.

According to the Al-Hayat report on Saturday, recent developments in the investigation have lifted much of the uncertainty in the case, with security sources estimating that arrests are imminent.

A Dubai security source said that while the assassination had been carried out swiftly, its perpetrators left evidence behind that could significantly aid efforts to track them down.

The source added that local police had already contacted Interpol in what could be a joint effort to have the suspects arrested.

On Friday, a Dubai security source identified the suspects in the killing as members of a "criminal gang" that tracked al-Mabhouh before he entered the country.

The source added that most of the suspects have European passports.

Also Friday, exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshal made an impassionate speech to thousands of Palestinians mourning Mahmoud al-Mabhouh's assassination, which they believe was orchestrated by Israel.

Meshal described al-Mabhouh as a "great man" who fought Israel for 30 years, and warned of reprisals for his death.

"I say to you Zionists, do not rejoice. You killed him but his sons will fight you," he said. "God already took our leaders and loved ones, but resistance goes on. Palestine is a blessed land. It will not remain patient."

Justification For Next Hamas Terrorist Attack

No proof whatsoever of Israeli complicity in Dubai assassination. Hamas and their ilk will naturally blame Mossad. It's a way of justifying their next terrorist attack.

Here is the police chief in his own words: "It could be Mossad, or another party, personally, I don't exclude any possibility. I don't exclude any party that has an interest in the assassination." My first though was that it was Mossad also, but at this point it is all speculation, thus it would be irresposible to point the finger.

Israel wants to provoke Hamas (old game)

I know it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but it seems like Israel wants to provoke Hamas. Israel's politicians know that Hamas will feel tempted to retaliate and hurt Israelis, and then Israel's politicians after they used their citizens for the dirty political game will say, "See, America, those Ayrabs are barbarians" and many Americans who don't know any better will go with that thinking. Who pays for that? Liberal Jews who don't hate people for being different, Arabs, Americans, Europeans etc... Israel needs to stop their mad behavior. It is anti-Israeli. Most Israelis if they knew the motives of the government would get rid of them fast.

The other 'neat little package' would have Israel whacking a Hamas guy to provoke the war Netanyahu wants with Gaza. Let's leave the more paranoid speculations alone until we find out IF the Dubai police are able to find out what really happened.

DT makes an excellent point. The Mossad would have had to have made a huge blunder of the operation such that the Dubai investigation *already* has leads (and I seriously doubt Dubai would brag in that matter unless in fact they *did* have the lead they are implying). It sounds far too messy to be a Mossad operation. After reading the details of many purported Mossad assassinations, one is struck by the simplicity of their operations. I.e., e.g. a small caliber handgun with a silencer to the back of the head while another "operator" distracts the target. But first an electric shock (that supposedly did *not* kill him) and *then* either poisoning or strangulation depending on which Hamas official is blustering. Think for second WHY would Mossad resort to a 2-stage killing mechanism. It just doesn't make any sense from the point of view of a professional org. that can use any means necessary. There's so much internecine violence in all the Palestinian factions to suspect any of them.

Electric shock by mains voltage is an most uncertain method of killing. I doubt if anyone in the business would use it. Not Mossad, more likely a jolted lover.

Lets just read this again: According to the Al-Hayat report on Saturday, recent developments in the investigation have lifted much of the uncertainty in the case, with security sources estimating that arrests are imminent. Now, that is so interesting we can imagine Mossad agents have decided to spend a few more days in Dubai, awaiting an imminent arrest. Good day.
