Report: Algeria arrests Mossad agent with fake Spanish passport

FBI Deputy Director John Pistole visited Algeria to negotiate alleged spy's release, Ennahar El Djadid reports.

Algerian authorities have arrested an Israeli Mossad agent carrying a fake Spanish passport in the city of Hassi Messaoud near an Egyptian office providing service for oil companies, Algerian Ennahar El Djadid newspaper reported on Tuesday.

According to the Algerian sources, the Mossad agent entered Algeria under the fake identity of a 35-year old Spanish man named Alberto Vagilo, and spent over ten days in the country prior to his arrest.

The report came a week after an Israeli citizen who went missing for several days in Algeria, who was also carrying a Spanish passport, raised suspicions that he might have been kidnapped by al-Qaida.

The man notified the Foreign Ministry that he contacted his family and that he was safe.

The Algerian paper also reported that the Mossad man received entry visas through a European embassy before traveling to the country via Barcelona.

According to the Algerian sources, deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), John Pistole visited Algeria last Thursday to negotiate on behalf of the Israeli citizen, as there are no diplomatic relations between Israel and Algeria.

Ennahar El Djadid went on to report that the man has a good command of Arabic, is well acquainted with the city, and even participated in the Muslim prayers in the Bilal Ibn Rabah mosque.

London-based pan Arab daily ASharq al-Awsat reported last week that the Algerian government suspected that an Israeli citizen was abducted by Al-Qaida after he entered the country using a Spanish passport.

According to the report, the man was first held by locals and afterwards was sold to the al-Qaida terrorist organization.

The Islamist organizations usually reveal the identities of their abductees after several days.

It is very simple for the Algerians to determine if the Spanish passport is legitimate: an official call to the Spanish embassy to verify that the passport number is registered in the Spanish MFA as a legally issued passport. If the Spanish verify that the number is valid, and the name on the passport matches, the subject is freed. If the Spanish say there is no record of a passport with that number having been issued, the passport is forged and the subject arrested for violation of Algerian entry laws. And before it is over, he will tell why he is there with a forged passport, and who gave it to him. And the country that issued the forged passport will be advised that it violated Algerian sovereignty. If that country is Israel, the Israelis will call the Algerians, the Spanish and everybody else involved, anti-semites, except that guy in the cell with no teeth and both eyes swollen shut.

Let's seriously analyse the article : 1)any proof he is employed by israeli Mossad? 2)are all Israeli citizans with other citizanships employed by Mossad? it looks like that having the Israeli citizenship, it means to be automatically employed by Mossad. In this case Mossad would be the richest governmnental organization of the world or its workers the poorest. 3)is it a crime to have double citizenship? 4)Is it a crime to be an israeli citizen of muslim religion? 5)Alberto Vagilio entered with Spanish passaport and Spain should act responsably to take care of its citizens, no matter if they have double citizenship. The foreign press makes very strong assumptions on a prejudicial base and also the Algerian authorities. News like that are produced simply to defame people who have israeli citizenship.

The world is on to the Mossad. The cost of the pleasure of exterminating a single thug is that now the whole world is aggressively pursuing vectors of inquiry that will continue to expose Mossad agents until a few, or a few dozen (given the level of incompetence in the Israeli government) have been exposed or exterminated. The manifest incompetence of the Netahyahu gang is again exposed. The Netanyahu gang is juvenile, pathetic and incompetent. It is THE great threat to Israel today.

Much of the Mossad's much vaunted reputation is due to it's tennancy to operate far beyond the limits and mores that govern most intellegence organizations. Israel has enjoyed it's "wink, wink I cannot confirm or deny..." while selectively leaking snippets of it's "accomplishments". In the past, this passed for deterrance. Now, with the attention of the international community on it's more blatantly illegal operations, and some of it's more notable recent failures, and by any measure, Dubai must be viewed as a debacle, the fools at Mossad and the FM's office continue to make the same mistakes! I find it difficult to stop laughing! Mossad was never that capable, at least not for years. It was just their willingness to do the unthinkable (at least to any other civillized intellegence agency) that gave the perception that they were in any way remarkable. Now, they reveal themselves remarkable mainly for their ineptitude, and brazen stupidity! Keep it up guys! Ha, Hahahaha!

"The only time I ever use my foreign passport is when I visit my country of origin." So in other words the millions of Palestinian refugees who lived on this land and are now refugees have no right to return, but yet as an immigrant as you've stated above, you have full rights to this land? I'm glad these Mossad agents are being caught daily. They're going to get countries into big messes by using passports from those countries. At this rate, Israelis will never be trusted to travel anywhere.

Assuming there is any truth to this and not Algeria trouble making then what business is it of theirs what passport this Mossad guy travels under as long as its not Algerian? The Brits were angry because its forged British passports used, if it had been Spanish it would be for the Spanish ahthorities to decide what to do. How do the Algerians know it was forged? The British naturally have a record of legaly issued passports but Algeria doesn't have a record of Spanish passports? How do they know its a forged passport or this alleged agent wasn't a spanish national? Even though my first loyalty is to Israel and not the queen as I am an olleh from England as well as my Israeli passport I keep an up to date British one for conveniance when visiting relatives. Legally though I am a British national. How do the Algerians know this alleged Mossad agent was not a Spanish national? Sounds to me more like jumping on the back of the British passport scam to make trouble

I would presume the Mossad Agent picked up an entry visa for Algeria using his fake Spanish Passport either through France or Spain. What would be interesting is how the Algerians decided that this was a fake passport. Isometric evaluation of photographs taken in Dubai? The spectacle of aMossad agent being hung for murder in Dubai must be concentrating minds enough for the sencond in command of the FBI paying a visit to Algeria. I wonder if they hang or behead murderers in Dubai?

Talkbackers seem to be having trouble achieving traction on this story. Might it have something to do with the fact that this is the smoking gun we've all been waiting for? Where is all the snappy repartee, the tortuous puns, the arrogant non-denials and the "ambiguity"? This time someone has screwed up big time and we are left, not alone with a face on a passport, but with a corresponding real live human. Before this individual returns to home soil he/she will be in a position to write the Michelin Guide to the European prison system. An awful lot of spooks of various nationalities will want to have a chat. You folks like to talk about chutzpah but to antagonise yet another EU country implies stupidity of heroic proportions. Is this the sixth EU member state to be involved? He/She might get to travel even further afield, Appendices for Australia and the US are also on the cards. The only way "ambiguity" can be maintained is if your boorish PM leaves the agent swinging in the wind.

Most Israelis have immigrated from other countries, and so many of us have dual citizenship. Some Israelis use their foreign passports to enter countries who would not allow them in if they were to use their Israeli passports. I have always made it a point to use my ISraeli passport wherever I go. Therefore, I can and have visited Egypt and Jordan, I can visit Morocco, but I can't and won't visit Algeria until I am allowed to enter using my Israeli passport. The only time I ever use my foreign passport is when I visit my country of origin.

From story: "The Algerian paper also reported that the Mossad man received entry visas through a European embassy before traveling to the country via Barcelona." Well, Spain is part of Europe! Was it an embassy other than the Spanish Embassy? The same thing happened in Lebanon a while back, yet the alleged Mossad agents were never identified, nor did Israel acknowledge that they even had any agents in Lebanon at the time. The more claims like this pop up in the news, all with identical circumstances, the more inclined I am to brush them off as propaganda. The whole idea behind such claims is obviously to give the world impression that Israel has agents everywhere and is trying desperately to bring governments down on their knees. Rubbish! Israel is a tiny country with limited resources nowadays. They have their hands full just defending their borders.
