Memorial Day for Israel's Fallen 40 Years Have Gone by and I Still Can’t Look Into His Mother’s Haunting Eyes

My friend Raanan Kolar was killed in the Sinai in the Yom Kippur War. He was a hero, one of his comrades told me, though I couldn’t care less

I don’t know anymore whether Raanan was my best friend in real time or whether he assumed that distinction over the years. His memory, certainly, looms larger in my mind today than at any time since his death, almost 40 years ago, on the banks of the Suez Canal. Young soldiers may die, especially in Israel, but in the minds of those who knew and loved them, they seldom fade away.
