I don’t know anymore whether Raanan was my best friend in real time or whether he assumed that distinction over the years. His memory, certainly, looms larger in my mind today than at any time since his death, almost 40 years ago, on the banks of the Suez Canal. Young soldiers may die, especially in Israel, but in the minds of those who knew and loved them, they seldom fade away.
