Rajoub: Qana tragedy will delay captured soldier Shalit's release

Hamas vows to avenge Qana deaths with attacks, even bombings; Meshal urges Palestinians to step up resistance.

By Aluf Benn and Amos Harel News Agencies

Israel's bombing of the Lebanese town of Qana will delay discussions on an Israeli-Palestinian cease-fire in Gaza and the return of kidnapped soldier Corporal Gilad Shalit, because the bombing has captured center stage in the Arab world, said Jibril Rajoub, the Palestinian Authority's former national security adviser.

Last week, Rajoub had predicted that a deal for Shalit's return could be finalized this week, and he reiterated on Sunday that the various Palestinian factions were close to an agreement on the subject with Egyptian mediators. "But following the massacre in Qana, this date is no longer relevant," he said. "Everything is liable to change at the strategic level."

Palestinian Islamic Jihad vowed on Sunday to avenge the Qana bombing with attacks in Israel, while the Fatah-affiliated Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades urged attacks on Israeli targets overseas.

Hamas also vowed on Sunday to carry out attacks on Israel that could include suicide bombings in response to an Israeli air strike on the Lebanese village of Qana that killed over 50 civilians.

Exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshal called on Palestinians to step up their resistance in response to Israel's "massacre" in Qana.

"The only response to this ugly massacre is an acceleration of the resistance in Lebanon and Palestine," Meshal told Reuters in an interview.

"Is there any thing left for our peoples except resistance to protect our women, children, land and honor in this Zionist-American age," he added.

Meshal said Israel was trying to appease Palestinians holding an Israel Defense Forces soldier in Gaza by offering them a deal he did not specify so it could focus its efforts on its onslaught on Lebanon.

"We have to be careful of calls to isolate the Palestinian cause from what is going on in Lebanon. This will not protect our people," said Meshal, who lives in Syria.

Senior Hamas lawmaker Mushir al-Masri said, "in the face of this open war against the Arab and Muslim nations all options are open, including striking the depth of the Zionist entity."

Asked if that meant suicide bombings against Israelis, Masri said: "All options are open. Every means is allowed. This is a crime and state-terror and a crossing of all red lines."

Hamas carried out nearly 60 suicide bombings against Israelis during a Palestinian uprising that began in 2000, and its armed wing has fired homemade rockets from Gaza into Israel.

Shortly after Hamas issued its statement on Sunday, a rocket fired from Gaza slammed into the Israeli border town of Sderot.

Medics said a 29-year-old woman was moderately wounded. Hamas's armed wing claimed responsibility for the launch.

Besides its offensive in Lebanon against Hezbollah, Israel has been engaged in an offensive against Palestinian militants for more than a month since militants, including members of Hamas, abducted an Israeli soldier in a cross-border raid from Gaza.

The Israeli air strike on Qana in southern Lebanon killed at least 40 civilians, including 23 children.

Protesters swarm UN buildings in Beirut, Gaza CityPalestinian gunmen stormed the main United Nations compound in Gaza City on Sunday, witnesses said, part of a protest against Israel's bombing of a building in the southern Lebanese village of Qana that killed around 60 people.

Hundreds of members of Islamic Jihad militant group, some throwing stones and others firing rounds from assault rifles, attacked the compound at the end of a rally, witnesses said.

At least two people were wounded.

UN staff were inside the compound at the time, but managed to escape, a UN official said. He said the site, which includes scores of buildings, was heavily ransacked by the demonstrators.

Witnesses said UN guards appeared to set off tear gas grenades to allow staff time to get away.

"The situation is very tense," the UN official said.

Members of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's special guard arrived shortly afterwards and managed to disperse some of the crowd by firing into the air.

Gunfire could be heard from within the compound but it was not clear who was firing at whom, witnesses said.

The attack came hours after a violent assault by Lebanese demonstrators against the UN headquarters in Beirut.

Witnesses said extensive damage had been caused to the United Nations's Gaza compound, from where it directs its relief and aid operations for the whole of the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, Lebanese protesters broke into the UN headquarters in Beirut smashing windows, ransacking offices, and burning UN and American flags.

Several thousand people massed outside the building in downtown Beirut chanting "Death to Israel, death to America. We sacrifice our blood and souls for Lebanon."

Thirty-seven of the dead were children, the Lebanese Red Cross said. Dozens of others were reportedly trapped in the rubble. Several houses collapsed and a three-story building where about 100 civilians were sheltering was destroyed, witnesses and rescue workers said.

The bombings, initially in response to a Hezbollah cross-border raid in which eight IDF soldiers were killed and two kidnapped, escalated with hundreds of Hezbollah rocket attacks against Israeli towns and cities.

I find your message deeply disturbing - where is your sympathy for the poor Lebanese casualties?Israel's government have expressed their upset but all you can do is spit more hatred. If Hizballah is Lebanon then g-d save Lebanon for once you identify with people who think nothing of bringing a war down on the heads of their own people, you are doomed. Sadly, those Lebanese who don't agree with Hizballah will bear the brunt of the conflict. I dont' see Hizballah standing proud and fighting, rather they hide behind women and children. they make me sick as do you!

As all would like peace, Israel's offensive should continue until the all soldiers are released and Hezbollah is destoryed to point that they are no longer a threat. Of course we can not forgot about Hamas and terror goons that need a good butt kicking. This is the way to have peace and quite in the region. A cease-fire will not help. Hezbollah, Hamas and goons need a lesson that they will never forget.

without Hezbollah's weapons there would be no Lebanon. It would have been Israel on the World map. Israel's attempt to conquer in 1982 was a failure due to the bravery of the men that gave their blood for their country to survive. Go kill some more innocent civilians, and blame it on Hezbollah. Go tell people Hezbollah is firing rockets at our cities, as if Israel did not do any damage to Lebanon. Go spread some more lies to the world. Around 60 innocent civilians die in Qana. Israel says they saw Hezbollah there. Just for your information, Hezbollah does not fire near civilians. Hezbollah CARES about people, unline YOU!

I totally agree with you. The question is what can be done? Israel can't sit on its hands and wait until the moslemes have enough technical capability to wipe it out. all things being equal, it is Israel thats a prison, not Gaza. the moslems have it surrounded b y land and the Europeans by Sea. They own the UN too. I think that you have the right Idea. Destroy the Syrian regime, it would automatically cut Hezbola off from Iran and Lebanon would be able to sign a peace. So would Syria's new regime. None of that could have been done before Iraq was taken out. b ut now it can be. don't wory about France and Russia. France is not a friend, it is an enemy. they stabbed us in the back in 1967 and have been sticking it to us since then. Russia will not interfere, the US wouldn't allow it. Germany still owes us a lot for their murderous past.

It is refreshing to see that _one_ person at least is lucid enough to tell it like it is. Indeed it is worth reminding everyone that the IDF had first _kidnapped_ two *civilians* before the Hezbollah _captured_ the IDF *soldiers* as they were crossing yet again into Lebanon. There had first been an _ obvious provocation_ by Israel... and so, the destruction of the neighbouring country and the killing of 600 Lebanese civilians was completely _unjustified_. Another major dangerous choice of words due to propaganda is "terrorist groups" to describe Hamas and Hezbollah. They are merely resistance movements defending their people against an aggressive force that used terror to establish a new state in their midst.

Olmert is a fool for apologizing -- that only encourages this hypocrisy and encourages the enemy to use civilian human shields. Better that 60 of the enemy should die than one of our people. Make that 6,000 of the enemy. Or 60,000. The U.S., Britain, Russia, etc., they have all done the same thing during war, even worse (Hiroshima, Dresden, etc.). They're only going nuts over it because they think that they can manipulate us through Jewish neurotic guilt. Hey, the arabs don't care if their children die, so why should we? Hizbollah has lobbed over 2000 rockets intentionaly at civilian targets over the past 17 days. How does this fit in with your moral ground? It is more a matter of luck than anything else that there have not been more Israeli casualties, much to Hzb's chagrin no doubt. Hizb started this war, and has no right to complain about Israeli retaliation. Their methods of warfare and cynical use of civilians (they also built shelters and bunkers for themselves but no protection for the people they profess to be protecting), knowing that their actions would bring on Israel response) are below all levels of human decency. They care not for these people other than the PR value provided by their deaths. Israel has not had a day's peace since its inception, and this time the straw broke. You have no right to sit there in Birmingham and determine who is moral and who is not. War is bad and not moral. If Israel and the US has lost its moral advantage, where do you place Iran/Syria/hiz/?

In the media, we only read about the Lebanese civilian casualties and numbers of displaced people. Well, most fail to understand that the terrorists are hiding amongst civilians and... even some of the terrorists are regular civilians too. On the Israel side, there are not as many casualties because the people are staying in bomb shelters. It seems to me that the war is fair on both sides... with each side choosing a different tactic.

What? Israel should stop listening to the US? But they are financed and made themselves what they are by the US! Israel would have had to learn to compromise and become modest and reasonable a long time ago or otherwise would have ended to exist if it was not for the US money. In it's politics of deterrence it is absolutely depended upon US money comming in. It's a spoiled child behaving like a spoiled child. And that's the problem.

Tell them like it is; if the IDF takes soldiers, it's called 'capture; if Hezbollah takes soldiers, it's called 'kidnap'. I want to see if Israel will ever return the doctor and his brother who were kidnapped days before Hezbollah 'captured' the soldiers; as they were CIVILIANS and not fighting, that is KIDNAP. Pity Israel also cannot bring back the family they killed on the Gaza strip 'by mistake'; if the doctor's kidnapping and the killing of a family didn't happen before, maybe Hezbollah would have had no reason to capture anyone.

This is sick. really sick. Its a victory for Hisbollah. Muslims will see and learn that if they go to war with Israel they will win concessions of territory (as usual). Even if they loose the war they still win. This Rice woman is an amateur. So naive. In the end Israel has to pay. So Syria will start a war to get Golan. And what is next?? A war to get Jerusalem. And then rolling tanks towards Tel Aviv and the Jews in the sea.

After all what Israel did in Lebanon here are the results: 1. More Israeli soldiers killed and injured. 2. Lots of destruction in Israeli Cities. 3. Israeli Economy suffered heavy losses ( billions ). 4. Thousands of Israeli left Israel 5. Thousands of Israeli suffer from menthal problems ( fear, anxiety, etc..) 6. Devastation in Lebanon and thousands killed and injured ( many are still under rubbel). 7. Destroyed much of Hizbollah civilian establishments. 8. Loss of tourism season in Lebanon. 9. Confirmed to all Arabs and muslims that Israel is a real enemy. And here are the funny results: 1. Israel will release Lebanese prisoners. 2. Israel will withdraw from Shebaa Farms. 3. Hizbollah will be much stronger politically after the war. 4. Hizbollah will keep all his arms in Lebanon except for the missiles which will be dumped in Israeli cities prior to cease fire ( Israel giving hizbollah more time ) 5. Billions of dollars will pour on Lebanon for rebuilding. Thanks Israe

America has beeen paying a heavy price since the day Casper Weinberger turned his back on American Marines and called off the the destruction of Hizbollah's training facility in 83. Then Clinton opened the door for Bin Laden in 93 with Mogadishu. Rice now gives Hizbollah legitimacy with discussions about "prisoners" and Shaba. Let's face it. America does not have a credible track record for dealing effectively with terrorists. Following the State Department's lead will destroy Israel's deterence in the region. Shia's will have a new massiah in Nasrallah. Iran will destroy the US and Britain in Iraq through their shia proxies. The house of Saud will fall to shias in the oil rich eastern province. The muslim brotherhood and Al Qaida will resist Iran and go ballistic all over the planet to prove they are the true messengers of Mohamed. And on and on. If Israel does not launch a major ground campaign against Hizbollah, all the above may very well happen.

These terrorists will feel so emboldened, they will surely try again and this time they will succeed. Over the past 58 years, Israel has never been allowed to win a war. Israel began hostilities after unprovoked actions by hamas and hezbollah, resulting in killing of soldiers and kidnapping of three. The killing and wounding of "innocent" civilians in lebanon and in gaza is the fault of hezbollah, who chooses to live among the people and to hide weapons in their houses, religious sites and schools. The true innocent civilians are in Israel, killed or wounded by the rockets and in the past by homicide bombers. Until the peace-keeping force is in place and functioning, Israel must not withdraw or cease present fighting.

Of course not, for anyone contemplating a cipher would never have attached his fate, and that of his nation to a fool like Condi Rice. These are all 3 targets the Israeli government wanted, but instead of just getting everything they want, the Lebanese will get what they want and there will be peace. You can't expect to force all your terms against someone while not giving them any of theirs unless you win militarily and this is not going to happen so a ceasefire will have to address concerns of both sides.

Sad to see over and over again how weak this country becomes. If Israel accepts the rice plan it is the complete victory for Hezbollah: Successful military resistance, Israel?s retreat from the Sheba farm and an exchange of the prisoners. That means, it pays out to ignore international treaties, it pays out to kidnap people, it pays out to send rockets. It makes me sad and it makes me angry how much our politicians bend before the US and worlds opinion and how weak they became compared to the founders of our state. And it is foreseeable that it will go on like this: disengagement in the shtachim, division of Jerusalem, retreat from the Golan until the Syrians sit again at the northern part of the Kinneret. Unfortunately there seem to be too many Jews who don't understand that their vision of peace isn't existent in the mind of the other side. Peace for the vast majority of Muslims (of course they are yearning for it) means a peace without Israel. Under these circumstances each appeasement is nothing else then going further down on the road of self-destruction.

Olmert deserves the blame for this disaster and not Rice. Even with all of the flack over Iraq and the Iranian nuclear program, Bush and Co. still went to bat for Israel and gave us a blank cheque to wipe Hezbollah out and the IDF hasn't delivered. It's not the fault of the soldiers, but the totally inept General Staff who have run a unimaginative and tepid campaign that did more damage to Lebanon's roads than to Hezbollah. The three main goals of the campaign should have been: 1. Push Hezbollah as a military threat north of the Litani River with a majority of its missile threat eliminated and its ability to field an effective force gone. 2. Eliminated the top echelon of its leadership. 3. Punish Syria for its role so that it thinks twice about rearming some other group. Israel is batting 0-3. Giving up Shebba Farms, allowing Hezbollah to survive as a force, and releasing Mr. Kuntar can only be seen as an apalling failure. Olmert must resign.

No deal can be reached and successfully implemented if the Hezbollah does not agree with it, and it's obvious that severeal points proposed by Rice will not be accepted by the group. Moreover, the IDF is currentyly failing in its operation against Hezbollah, and 7 to 10 days more will not bring much. No force can be deployed without Hezbollah agreement. No cease-fire is possible unless Hezbollah accepts its terms. Nobody can disarm Hezbollah or force the group to stop arm smuggling but Hezbollah itself - in other words, it's not gonna happen. The plan as presented now is no viable.

Now, these proposals that are described in this article have the potential to lead to a lasting peace on the Israeli-Lebanese borders because each side could claim that it has gained something important from the recent terrible war. Israel would be satisfied that the Lebanese army and an empowered international force would likely provide it with secure northern borders; while Hizb-Allah would argue that it has won the release of its prisoners and the "liberation" of the Shiba Farms (which are smaller than many soccer stadiums).

HA! The first thing they'll probably do is surrender, AFTER, of course, they hang the Israelis. Remember Dreyfus! So much for the French general staff... with the emphasis on general.

First she forced Sharon to plow ahead with the "disengagement" fortifying Hamas. THen she presided over a Hamas election by forcing Olmert to let them run. Now she wants to legitimize Hezbollah's ficticious "resistance" with a withdrawal from Shaba, a Syrian territory. She is also giving Ehud a 7-10 day ultimatum to end the war.An impossible feat given how hetied the hands of the IDF. If Olmert caves into this looser who has a constant loosing strategy he must be removed from office. This Rice/Kadima dance has been the ruin of Israel. They dance in Teheran once again.

One square meter/inch of ground that should belong to Israel, I also think Israel should get boots on the ground and destroy the terrorist hezballah, including their mouthpiece, or whatever the moron is that does all the bragging and threatning.
