Qatar said to give $50 million in aid to Hamas-led government

Syrian VP Shara quoted as saying that Damascus will launch a public fundraising campaign for the PA.

By News Agencies

Qatar said on Monday it will give $50 million in aid to the cash-strapped Palestinian Authority despite calls from the United States and European Union to cut off funding unless the Hamas-led government recognizes Israel.

A Foreign Ministry official told the state-owned Qatar News Agency the aid decision "stems from Qatar's support for the Palestinian people".

The Syrian government announced it would launch a public fundraising campaign for the PA, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported Sunday.

According to the report, Syrian Vice-President Farouq Shara declared that bank accounts would be opened for people to transfer donations to the Palestinians. Shara was speaking in a joint press conference with former Iranian President Akhar Hashemi Rafsanjani in Tehran.

"I hope that Arab countries will not be swayed by the pretext that these funds would be used for terrorist activities. This aid will serve to avoid a real catastrophe in Palestine," Shara was quoted as saying.

On the issue of Iran's nuclear program, Shara said that making use of peaceful nuclear energy is a legitimate right of all signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) including Iran.

He added that the West is interested in making Muslim countries dependent on the Western countries and therefore they oppose access to nuclear technology by Arab and Muslim countries.

I have been disgusted for a while from the posts I read as it is full of lies, deceptions and outright bigotry. Babuyaya says that the Palestinians are the worst losers in history. Guess what I have news for you. The worst loseres in history are indeed the Jews. Almoat every celebration and holidays you have commemorates a catastrophe, a slavery, a mass suiside (MASSADA), and finally the slaughter of 6 million Jews just over 60 years ago. At least the Palestinians are brave and fighting back withh their own bodies; they are not led like sheep to their slaughter houses and concentration camps. You all bought Aba Eban infamous statement that the Palestinians " will never miss and opportunity to miss an opportunity". Indeed one could say that the Jews "never missed an opportunity to miss being enslaved or slaughtered'. Without our support this may very well recur. Palestinian; I admire your steadfastness against all the odds; it is the American spirit. God bless you all.

Many people know the truth, but don't want to accept it. The truth is that Jews suffered a lot in the 2nd world war. The truth is that the West helped them create a state in Palestine and make rid of them. The truth is that the aim of many in the West was to control the oil in the MEast. The truth is that Palestinians were oppressed, killed and thrown out of their land, Palestine... There is no place for 2 states in "Israel/Palestine". There should be only one country, Palestine, a democratic country in which Muslims, Jews, and Christians live in harmony and peace.

Let us be careful about calling the feverish allignment of the Arabo-Muslim world to rush to the support of Hamas, as the expected wishes of the Western World and Israel. Before calling such a strategy as a victory, we shall have to get ourselves in touch with reality. Is the support of the ME countries to the PA has a possible influence to moderate the Hamas extremism, or would the fact that knowing the Arabo-Muslim nations being willing to come to the rescue is only one time hand out or they might be willing to require from the PA accountibility on their contribution?! One thing is for real now, the Quartet have open up a new era in the relations, thus involvement, between a great party of the Arab worldand the militant government in the PA. This eventuality bring with it promises and possible a future cooperation between the Western world and the Arab counterpart in the resolution of the Iranian problem. They, both camps, have more interest in saying the PA away from the Persians, and into some form of allignement; and here is the promise. As for a disaster: the possible radicalisation of the people of the donors in the Arab countries, demanding different attitude toward Israel and the West. THe futur will tell as to whether the decision of the Quartet was a smart one.

Let's not jump the gun, Qatar is no different then all the other arab countries, they are quick to promise slow to deliver. Let's not forget Iran's promise to send financial aid to Hamas, almost 2 months ago. Where is that money? Or the arab worlds promise to aid the muslim tsunami victims, where is that money? arab counties have a long history of making PR promises and never following through, If the arab world cared about the Palestinians there would be no refugee camps. But the truth is the arab world doesn't care about the Palestinians, so it's left for the western world to have to deal with.

To call Syria, Iran and Qtar , China ,etc the free world show ignorance of both what is freedom and history. I am sure the people of Tibet do not know that China is not a colonial power, I am sure that the Hungary and other east European states do not know that Russia was not a colonial power, I am sure that 1000,000's of Black slaves traded by Arab countries in northen Africa over the centuries would not think freedom equates with their past. There is no wonder a Palestinian would equate those countries with 'free' - after the corruption of the PA government, after electing Hamas (an organisation dedicated to freedom :), after the many Kangroo courts of the PA government - executing people, after Islamic tradition of womean having limited rights as best, after Islamic tradition of treating other religions as second class , etc ,etc ,etc...... If this is the free world then before of the Free asperations of the Palestinians

It would be nice to know just what Israel received in return for its support of Qatar's membership on the UN Security Council. We supported them out of good will. Now we see their "good will." Last week we get their condemnation and now their support for terrorists.

Mark, Hamas was voted in before funds were frozen.Actually USA tried to assist PA to win by providing more funding approval during election. Hamas was already close to Iran and Syria - before the funding issue came about. Hamas would not lessen its relationship with these two if funding was provided - after all Iran is thier religous & political centre To blame Tipsi and Condi for reacting to facts on the ground (funding is stopped after Hamas is elected and refuses to recognise past agreements - is a major stretch......

So, Hamas will get 50 million here, 50 million there, but it won't last long. They're still falling far short from meeting their monthly budget needs. And what about next month. Will these same donors contribute again? And the month after that? And the month after that? Very doubtful. The Arab world is not very charitable. Hamas won't last long in power. They can't. Not when the Palestinian economy is bankrupt, and bankrupt it will be. I do give accolades to the European Union, who for ONCE did the right thing and cut off aid to these Hamas swine. I suspect the Palestinian electorate will be more careful come next election.

Read the work of Jonanthan Kwittny: Endless Enemies. This famous journalist of The Wallstreet Journal and admierer of the great Jewish journalist I.F. Stone (The Hidden History of the Korean War) will tell you of what you think is the "free world". The Westerns oppress 135 countries; - and this group of oppressed counties call them "The Free World". The Palestinian is right!!! Look at www.reopen911.org and you know, what your "free world" really is!

As typically mis-educated as you are....you will never understand that those who play by the sword die by the sword...The palastinians's are the worst losers in History. They have been betrayed by their leaderships, as well as their people. History will never judge your struggle with compassion until you stop trying to kill innocent people. Your arguments are a discrace to humanity. You will stew in your own feces.

I haven't yet seen Russia or China make a move to assist the Palestinians...but they did move to help Iran. Does that mean that you two are one and the same? Preach all you want about colonialism. If you speak for the Palestinians, you have NO natural resources in which to exploit, so your argument is mute. Basic Economics 101 - if what you have is not desired by anyone, then it becomes worthless. Only the West's interest in oil has made the Arabs rich, not the oil itself. Once the West moves away from oil-dependency (and it cannot happen soon enough) - you will return to nomadic camel jockeys desparately seeking a place to dig for water. Except Dubai, which seems to have the right vision of the future and their success. They build luxury resorts and malls, you on the other hand blow them up. Just ask your friends in Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, and Qatar.

Now that Tipsi and Condi have achieved their goal of pushing the PA government closer to Iran and Syria, we should ask why they wanted to do this? What was their motive? Who benefits by further radicalizing the situation? If anybody thinks this is an unforseen event, they are fooling themselves. If Tipsi and Condi didn't see this as the inevitable outcome of the Starvation policy, neither should have the job she does. The US and Israeli public deserve answers to these questions.
