Putin: Russia opposes force, sanctions on Iran
Russian PM: Moscow has no grounds to doubt Iran's claim that its nuclear program is purely peaceful.
By The Associated Press Tags: Iran UN Israel newsRussian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Friday warned against using force or new sanctions against Iran for its defiance over its nuclear program, saying Moscow has no evidence that Tehran is seeking nuclear arms.
Iran has refused to provide the international community with details of its nuclear activities, which the United States and other nations say are aimed at developing weapons.
Putin said, however, that Moscow has no grounds to doubt Iran's claim that its nuclear program is purely peaceful, his spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
Putin said, according to Peskov, that any use of force, delivering any kind of strike, won't help, won't solve the problem. On the contrary, it will hurt the entire region. As for sanctions, they won't bring the desired effect.
Putin was speaking at a meeting of foreign experts on Russia.
According to other meeting participants, Putin also said Russia does not want to see a nuclear-armed Iran, and that Iran needs to answer international concerns about its activities.
Russia, which is building a nuclear power plant in Iran, has made similar comments in the past, and has repeatedly warned against any attack on Iran.
But Putin's remarks Friday could disappoint U.S. and Israeli officials, who have urged the Kremlin to put more pressure on Iran.
Participants in the meeting said Putin dodged a question about media reports that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secretly visited Moscow this week, including speculation that Netanyahu wanted to warn Russia of an impending strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.
Kremlin spokesman Alexei Pavlov said he had no information that Netanyahu was in Moscow, but Russian officials have stopped short of outright denying the visit took place.
The United States and European allies have given Iran until the end of September to take up an offer of nuclear talks with six world powers - including Russia - and trade incentives should it suspend uranium enrichment activities. It has already defied three sets of UN Security Council sanctions since 2006 for its refusal to freeze uranium enrichment.
Russia, which holds veto power on the UN Security Council, backed those sanctions but used its clout to water down tougher U.S. proposals. Russian officials have said too much pressure would be counterproductive.
This week, Iran offered a counterproposal for new wide-ranging negotiations, but provided no details of its nuclear program, according to a copy published by an investigative group.
U.S. officials have said the Iranian proposal falls short of satisfying international demands, but Russian media have suggested Moscow was less critical. According to Ekho Moskvy radio, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday that Iran's proposal included worthwhile elements and could be worked with.

so far they do not appear to be frightened of the WAR DRUMS. WHY?? because they believe that they not only can repulse an ATTACK , but they themslves could do something SURPRISING after the FOOLISH EVENT. So Bibi, I would be very careful
Do you think that the IRANIANS are afraid, well just play with this nest of WASPS. Good Luck.
All of this talk ammounts exactly to blah, and plenty of it. Nothing will happen, ever. Israel and the world will live with Iran and it's nuclear status, period. A strike is not possible or effective without the U.S. directly involved and that will never happen with Hussein in office. Prepare yourselves for plenty more blah in the near future regarding this matter.
What Putin does remember is that Georgia's president cried, after he got his arse kicked, that "Israelis are in charge of our war and peace". That Putin remembers. Now have some tea and settle down in your armchair in Germany and stop beating your tin war drum. There is NOT gonna be another neocon inspired bombing of yet another Arab country on the say so from the likes of you. Have your IAF deal with your paranoia, along with the consequences of it. More tea?
are still waiting for Bush's "mushroom cloud" from Iraq to dissipate; 5,000 dead, 20,000+ wounded, empty treasury, and now the same old warmongers say the same ole thing about Iran. Yep, soon as this "mushroom cloud" you and your ilk championed dissipates, we'll see about Iran. In the meantime, have some tea.
What an excuse! Jim, your knowledge of Islamist-Jihadism is superficial or you are trying to cover up on them. The fact is the Islamist-Jihadist Fanatics in Iran have planned their nuke ambition a long time ago. Ever since they took power in Iran in late 1970s, they have spread their militant ideology all over the region. They have now taken over Lebanon and Hamastan through their tentacles-Hezbollah and Hamas. Syria is also their tentacle. And once the Americans have pulled out, Iraq too will become their tentacle. Three times the past 4 years they threatened to annihilate Israel through their President's speeches in Tehran, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta. And the whole Islamist-Jihadist world applauded Ahmedinejad. Shortly after 9/11, Iran's former President Hashemi Rafsanjani told the crowd at Tehran stadium that a single nuke would vaporize Israel. The fact is "Jihad and killing are the head of Islam." (p.24, "Islam & Terrorism" [2002] by Mark A. Gabriel, PhD)
Too busy tongue lashing those nasty Swedes, of course.
she sells Iran nuclear capacities and then says, "don't touch Iran." Russia's in no position to dictate terms to any one. Iran cannot be allowed to have nuclear weapons for as a nation, she lacks any semblance of balance to the rest of the world, including Russia. Unfortunately, this act of false bravado only amplifies the need for Iran's being separated from her nuclear ambitions. Russia loves having power w/out the responsibility. The free world will not recover if Iran has nuclear weapons. If Russia is helping them, Russia becomes an automatic foe of the west and is a ally to Iran( temporarily) Israel has few options but to take out their nuke capacity. Russia is undermining the balance of power which should not be shared w/ lunatics who brutally punish her own citizens who disagree w/ her politics.
you have a right to a logical opinion, which it is, there are many more factors regarding my theory, but as you said, israel was once quiet, but was it? after following the M.E saga over 15 years, i have learned one thing, israel will do what i predict, i don't state a time, because israel keeps that a big secret. here's another prediction jim, israel will hit lebanon before iran, 100%, they need the target practise.
Israel have to remember the October war in 1973 in which General Dayan ordered the airforce to avoid the Suezcanal area because too many Mirages and other Israel planes were shot down. The Israel General Mink commander from a tank division in the Sinai bending his head out his tank and saw all destroyed Israel tanks around him, and suffer a heartattack. THANKS TO AMERICAN AERIAL PHOTO's THE ISRAEL ARMY WAS ABLE TO SURVIVE!
Chickens come home to roost after Israel armed and trained Georgian troops who went on to fight against Russia. Now the Israeli government is in disarray after a 'secret' visit to russia by Bibi. Russia has already built a nuclear power station for Iran, so no surprise if it sells missiles that can defend it. This is a time for cool heads, both Russia and the US oppose military action. Time to face reality, Iran WILL become a nuclear power, it is only a matter of time. The real issue is how Israel will deal with that scenario.
BUILD nuclear weapons. Is it for money at the expence of peace for other Nations? who created Hamas and Hezbollah? Didnt IRAN?
Neither Israeli talk nor Israeli military force nor USA sanctions will stop Iran from building nukes if indeed that is her intent. And when sanctions are mentioned, I can only recall how wrong the West was when they thought that Saddam Hussein had nukes. The use of force is the least desirable of options, and the threat of force is the stupidest choice of all for the West to make. Consider the value of Israel's unending stream of accusations against Iran:. With Ahmadinejad talking back from the other end, it has become a pointless war of words only good for emotional impact among nations. Israel's use of military force would only exacerbate the situation. Israel talks big, carries a stick she thinks is big, and sounds off like the little guy on the block whose only concern is to be noticed. A strike in Iraq, another in Syria. If she tries to hit Iran, historians will write her off as the dumbest warmonger in history.
This AP article is incorrect on an important point: In consonance with the unanimous assessment of the assorted American intelligence agencies, the official U.S. position is that Iran is NOT currently known to be pursuing the development of a nuclear weapon. Our intelligence agencies, in their last official intelligence estimate from early 2008, expressed a high level of confidence that there is no such weapons program in Iran.
"there are 2 scenarios here on bibi`s visit, one, bibi went to russia to get support for striking iran, fearing that russia will go fully against israel, this leads me to believe israel is going to attack very soon ... " I disagree. In the past, Israel has always kept very quiet about her real intentions, and sprung them as a surprise to the world. Witness the invasion of Egypt, and the operation in Entebbe, both operations executed with exquisite timing and total silence beforehand. Considering her bravado in the recent past, if Israel is planning to attack Iran, then she has lost all the marbles she once had, which is, of course, a distinct possibility. The other possibiulity is that she does not plan an attack but simply talks big. In either case, she is doing everything she can to insure that she remains alone. And the consquences of that may well be such as VIPER describes.
Thanks in part to Tehran, Putin's beloved Moscova (of "Pod Moscovnia Veerchera" fame)attained world stature by becoming the most expensive city in the world to live in, and he would like to keep it that way. The Russian Bear has developed an addiction to Iran's Mullah-enriched milk and it will only want to bite the hand that feeds it when other bears back home start getting restless after listening to Press TV and begin chanting "Allah Hu Akbar, Maghr Baghr Moscova!"
It's not much fun when it's someone else who has that veto-wielding-friend in their pocket, is it?
there are 2 scenarios here on bibi's visit, one, bibi went to russia to get support for striking iran, fearing that russia will go fully against israel, this leads me to believe israel is going to attack very soon, the second is bibi went to russia to water/playdown the hijacking of russias ship, either way, russia is more than peed off with israels medling in it's afairs. if there is a war, israel is going to find itself alone, russia will keep america at bay, the E.U will butt out and only voice there B.S, muslims around the world will have had enough, jews will be targets anywhere and everywhere, it will be a return of the nazi era once again, and who do we have to thank? the paranoid israel. so moderators, i have posted something similar, are you for your survival or your destruction? i am merely pointing out the consequences for your benefit, not mine.
of course he does-who would doubt it? putin wants to screw the US any which way he can. he misses the ole ussr and facing off against the US, only now he has to deal with a fool in the White House and that won't give him much of a challenge.
Ahmadinejad's and the Ayatollah's past remarks constitute direct responses to Israel's campaign to push around her Muslim neighbors. Israel's desire to get the rest of the world powers to fight Iran's imagined nuclear threat against Israel is a neurotic obsession. If there were a nuclear war, do Israelis really think that Russia would just stand there looking stupid? Russia is a close neighbor of Iran! Any major war with Iran would threaten Russia as well! The only person who shows any common sense in this controversy is Putin. His vero against sanctions is a move toward peace, or at least a move away from another war. The warmongers of the West - and especially those in Israel and Washington - should pay close attention to what Putin says! Or do they really believe that Putin is a moron?
The only solution is for Israel to use military force to take out Iran. Talk did not stop nazi Germany and talk will not stop Iran from building nukes.
The future ill-fated Russian and Iranian invasion of Israel will be Russian-led. Russia desperately seeking to return to superpower status will hastily draw up a coalition of Anti-Semitic nations for a quick strike on Israel from the Lebanon frontier.
putin cannot remeber that which he had never learned.
I wonder what Putin told him in private?
Putin should stop playing god on matters like this. Does he prefer seeing the Fanatics' Mushroom Cloud over Israel and all over the world including Russia? On matters like this, Putin or anyone else is irrelevant. Israel has the right to defend itself against any entity or country that threatens its annihilation. Iran has done that and is feverishly working on its nukes to accomplish its evil intention. Israel should not wait like a sitting duck for any Mushroom Cloud from the fanatical Ayatollahs or barrages of rocket attacks from Iran's fanatical tentacles.
How can you call yourself a realist when you post such low quality posts where you omitt historical nuances as well as logic? You are comparing Iran to the might and belligerence of Nazi Germany. Doing so is silly, and I actually fear that some might be stupid and ignorant enough to take you seriously. Best regards from a social democrat who considers himself a liberal with realist tendencies...
Can you tell me what will happen to Russia now if she rejects sanctions on Iran.
In 1939 Stalin helped Nazi Germany to wipe Poland, with its three million Jews, off the map. It seems that Russian policy is moving back to what it was then. Has Putin forgotten what happened to Russia two years later?
...when Russia vetoes any new sanctions.
