Putin lauds expat Lieberman's 'brilliant political career' in Israel
During talks in Moscow, FM calls for closer ties and economic cooperation between the two countries.
By The Associated Press Tags: Israel newsRussian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin praised Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Friday for his rise to a senior cabinet position in Israel after having emigrated from the former Soviet Union.
"We are very happy that people from the Soviet Union build such a brilliant political career," said Putin at a meeting in Moscow, referring to the foreign minister.
Lieberman, leader of the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu party, was born in the former Soviet Moldova.
During the talks, the foreign minister called for closer ties and economic cooperation between the two countries. He spoke with Putin in flawless Russian, throwing in a few words of English.
Putin also praised Israel's sizable Russian community as "something that unites us with you like no other country."
Lieberman was visiting Moscow for a session of a Russian-Israeli Intergovernmental Commission, which mainly focuses on economic ties. He lauded the commission for establishing a visa-free system between the two countries last year. He said the measure will likely to double the number of Russian tourists traveling to Israel to 400,000 this year.
The committee will invite business communities of both countries to its next session in April 2010 to discuss news initiatives such as measures to help protect Russian and Israeli investment, Lieberman said.
Lieberman and Putin did not discuss Iran's nuclear ambitions or any other foreign policy issues on the record. After stepping down as president in 2008, Putin formally isn't in charge of Russia's foreign policy.

the Billions we are sending yearly. After all there are quite a lot Russians living in Israel and on the WBank. Now that there is a Russian FM, whose goal no doubt is the Post of PM, Then Putin will be so very happy that his compatriot as reach the top.
in his government?
Lieberman probably has the same opinion of democracy as does Czar Vladimir.
There are not many countries where a working class immigrant like Lieberman could become Foreign Minister. However there is more to Putin's words than a statement of the obvious. Following the recent terrorist attack on a Russian train, Israeli help is needed to tighten up security.
he exactly meant what he said
... says a lot about Putin! long live the old Russian school of democrats... !
A good post. Welcome. Russia, unfortunately does have fuzzy feelings towards Afghanistan. Forget about the rout, that they suffered by their last incursion. Its more to do about Heroin. Heroin addicts have increased in RUSSIA. Russia has asked the US Administration, to at least thwart the growing poppy fields which have now reached unprecedented acreage. Lets be fair, the US cannot do anything, for they need the so called hearts and minds of this corrupt and slippery slope called Afghanistan.
Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, is one tough politico. From the halls of the KGB he became the finest leader of the Russian Federation. When Mr.Putin speaks, his words are well measured. Amazing enough, he never backtracks, unlike many other leaders who cry "wolf" or that their words were taken out of context. Now, Mr.Avigdor Lieberman is no different. He talks straight. No matter what the political consequences as interpreted by those liberal minded leaders or anti Israel lobby, such as yourself. Therefore your guarantee is absolutely worthless, rather a snide attack on the true leadership qualities of Mr.Putin. May both Israel and her 1 million plus Russian born citizens prosper. May Russia return to her status as a true superpower and maintain her constant international standing, non withstanding the current recession and finger pointing by those that truly wish to undermine said country. Good day from snowy Swiss Alps.
Israel is a mightful, but small country. Only through colaboration with friendly powers and allies it can withstand the pressure of the Arab streets and dictators till one day they become mature. Russia is not only very important country - with Putin, and now Medvedev it has two modern leaders who secured Russias integrety and stopped the downfall which could have brought thousands of nuclear weappons on the black market. Russia needs urgent help from West to modernize its economy, and the West should better bring this OBLIGATION! A destabilized Russia will be the end of the free West. Only unwise people can think any thing else. Russia has obviously it's own national interests, which are not less genuine than of any other country, USA included. Israel has to, and it will maintain good relationship with Russia, and support it where ever it can - many of those, who write here seem to have very limited understanding about Russia and it's leaders.
the military conflict in Georgia and who was involved,or has he?
Swiss banks just capitulated under the demands from the US Treasury, for max transparency and disclosure of US taxpayer accounts. No such stupid thing in Israel.
Russia is advancing its interests with both the Israeli's and Iran - one to undermine US power, and the other to have access to israeli weaponry and high-tech economy in the future. If the U.S completely changes its foreign policy and supports the arabs instead of Israel, Russia will be lined up ready to be Israels strongest ally. Lieberman is strengthening ties to contemplate what the next few decades holds for Israel.
It may not be czarist Russia but its become an oligarchy with its new King Putin! Power and secret police doesn't give one much hope for the future be it Russia or Israel!.....welcome to 1984.....with men like Lieberman actually getting elected,so much for democracy!
i can garauntee you 100% putin has it in for israel, it's not israeli pressure not to sell the s300 to iran, it's more american, putin is one of the most cunning leaders, very calculating and very very smart, don't take this "praise" as a sign of collaboration.
Putin has a nice way of put'in down Lieberman. The polite pat on the back and a compliment about his political career.
Lieberman is a genius,a hard nosed genius.Israel needs thousands more of him.He takes no nonsense from anyone.A real Israeli patriot. He isn't afraid to love his country Israel. As compared to the idiotic left in Israel, who can't find anything good in Israel.
Russia does not need the key export of Iran..which is oil. Selling or helping aid Iran with their nuclear program seems to be on the slow side. Russia has no fuzzy feelings for Afghanistan or Pakistan. Russia has problems with Islamic territories under its own influence. Like it or not Putin needs better relationships with the Israelis because Israel has smarts. Shalom Shabbat
Hugh, afcurse Putin have a ence of humor. Have you never heard the discussion he had with the frence president regarding the president of georgia. Putin said he wanted to hang the georgian president by his balls, the frence preesident said he could not do that. Putin replyed - Why not, the american hang sadam Huss by his neck, im only gonna hang him by his balls. The frence president: yes but look the way people around the world talks about Bush today. Putin: well!!!!!!!! you got a point there. saberen Denmark
Putin, Liberman, There seems to be a certain nudge towards Russia. This is not the Russia of the Tzars ! It could in some ways, act as a counter-balance to other forces. Russia is a huge country & she also has world wide interests. Israel should play her cards cooly & with foresight.
Didn't the Putin comment on Lieberman's brilliant career as a bouncer? Pity!
unlike many writers to this blog, Putin has respect for Russian immigration. I value his opinion much more than selfsufficient critics of Lieberman
In few the iranian will get their and recieve a warm welcome he is more of a PR man than a PM
No doubt Putin answered in "flawless Russian," while keeping his thoughts to himself. ; )
Putin knows all about it..
brilliant post by hugh
Russia's true colors are shining as vibrant as ever with this one! Birds of a feather... Free Chechnya Free Palestine!!!!!!!!!
Who says Putin doesn't have a sense of humour!
Putin also praised Israel's sizable Russian community as "something that unites us with you like no other country." Does that mean Israel will stop being a drain on the American taxpayer. I never understood exactly what "unites" America to Jews or Israel. It be great if Russia could take our place as welfare provider to Israel seeing as we American taxpayers can't afford to care for you any longer.
No one in Israel would be sad to see this Russian return to his homeland.
It is time for Israel to realize ,Putin is a better friend to Israel than Obama .
