Public Security Ministry to PMO: Rightists will march in East Jerusalem

Netanyahu sought to delay march in Arab neighborhood of Silwan until after departure of U.S. envoy Mitchell.

The Public Security Ministry on Saturday said it would not delay a rightist demonstration scheduled for Sunday in East Jerusalem, after a special request by the Prime Minister's Bureau.

After consultations with the attorney general and State Prosecutor's Office, the ministry said there is no legal basis for Netanyahu's request, adding that it would not be upheld by the High Court of Justice.

"This is a rally by extremist elements that want to provoke the Arab population in Jerusalem. Such activity at this time may ignite the city and hurt diplomatic efforts being led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to assist the Americans in jumpstarting the peace process," the statement said.

It is believed that Netayahu's unusual request was made due to the visit of U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell to the region. Mitchell is expected to depart Sunday night.

The Prime Minister's Bureau had asked for the demonstration to be delayed by several weeks.

On Friday, right-wing activist Itamar Ben Gvir refused a police request to cancel the march through the Arab neighborhood in East Jerusalem.

Ben Gvir was in the news earlier this year for penning a letter to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, threatening to protest his upcoming visit to Israel.

Polce have said they want Ben Gvir to cancel the march because it would stretch the police force thin when they are busy securing Mitchell during his visit.

Ben Gvir said in response to the police request: "We will not cancel the march. Mitchell is not the prime minister. There is no legal reasoning to this request; it is our right to march, even if Mitchell doesn't like it."

The courts can't stop them marching for fear of upsetting the local Arabs, the same way the Gay pride parade was aloud to take place even though it it upset the religous. Were are all the pro free speech comments and peopel who had so much to say regarding the gay pride march and now tehy are suddenly silent?

Israel is a democracy. Any group that wishes to demonstrate peacefully and within reason should be permitted to do so. Let them show the world what they advocate. We can learn much about their intentions from their actions.

To be even handed they should allow a Palestinian march supporting Fatah and Hamas in West Jerusalem or, as already suggested, treat them like Palestinians. These rightist groups are a cancer eating away at Israeli society. Israel has drifted so far from its socialist roots that the world is starting to see it as a rogue state that will need to be controlled. Israel needs to cast the settlers adrift as New Palestinians. They are living in the Holy land so what is their problem? Just means that they have to be nicer to the neighbours. If Israel needs to evict anybody, it is the Chabad. To allow this march during a diplomatic visit will be counterproductive and will lead to tears before bed time.

All that the PM has to do is declare the area a closed military zones and tell the IDF to skunk gas and shoot the extremists with rubber bullets who try to enter it like they routinely do to those who march in protest of the West Bank barrier. If Netanyahu does not have the bollocks to prevent few rightist extremists from inciting violence at this important moment, the Palestinians would be foolish to believe that any will be dropping at any time in the near future if ever.

What if the demonstrations are peaceful, non-rock-throwing, non-Molotov-cocktail throwing? Still have a problem? Or do your violent honeys have the sole rights to demonstrate?

It is admittedly very hard to reign in the really crazy element in any society and I do not blame Netanyahu for failing to do so here. Here in America we allowed the KKK to march and hold rallies all the time. If I hear that Netanyahu has secretly been encouraging them, or pandering to their current march, I will feel differently. But bad as I think Netanyahu is, I will give him a pass on this one--at least for the moment.

It would be a good idea to outnumber them in a peaceful demonstration of Jews and Arabs, who oppose racism, war and terror. These Israeli far rightists are tiny minority, probably few dozens of activists and few thousands of supporters. There are much more sane people. It would be right thing to do to oppose them without violence by counter demonstration and to show them their place - at the margins of the society and of the public discourse.

If Arabs held a march through West Jerusalem. I bet you they would not be allowed too by the Israeli government. On top of that many Jews would complain that the Arabs are trying to take over Israel and destroy it by doing a march in West Jerusalem. Do the right thing Bibi- shoot the protesters and fire tear gas on them. Prove to us that Israel treats its citizens equally!

Read an article in the New york Times by Yusi alver in which he explains that the Israeli army is now led by religious leaders and if you look at the demographics governments you have Liberman from Israel Bytuna and Ishai from Shas. So how could they confront themselves? Never happens.

This is an issue of the supreme court saying they could march after the march has already been delayed a few times. That is why he can't call for it to be cancelled because the supreme court already said they had the right to march. The supreme court seems to go out of its way to make bibi's life impossible. Politics plays in everything.
