Prime Minister admits Israel is plagued with organized crime
Olmert: Time has come to call phenomenon by name, we will have no tolerance in struggle against crime.
By The Associated PressPrime Minister Ehud Olmert admitted Wednesday that Israel is plagued with organized crime, but pledged that the police would adopt a zero tolerance approach to fighting it.
Addressing an international convention on corruption in government, Olmert said that crime has infiltrated many aspects of Israeli life. Departing from his text, which used the term "organized criminal activity," Olmert said he had decided to call the phenomenon by its name.
"I think the time has come, unfortunately, to say organized crime."
Local mobsters have tried to rub each other out with bullets, bombs and anti-tank rockets, sometimes catching innocent civilians in the crossfire.
Leading crime families are said to be involved in gambling, prostitution and money laundering.
The daughter of a reputed crime boss won a seat in the parliament that ended its term after March 28 elections. Earlier this year she prevented a search of her father's house by invoking parliamentary privilege.
Olmert, who took office earlier this month, said he met with police commanders and told them to target crime on all levels.
"We will have no tolerance in the struggle against crime," he said, but gave no specific details.

Dear Alex, As a Lawyer I am used not to accuse people w/out evidences, just A basic rule of law. Among the list of "White collar criminals" u cite, I found mainly people that are no more condemned that Jacques Chirac (that yr "standarts" shall be topping the list),or George W. Bush. Then, like the rest of your list, you simply putt names: Lansky, he was kicked out of the country by Golda Meir only days after he arrived, despite his rights to be given the Israeli citizenship (Law of return...), Mark Rich is a swiss citizen living in Switzerland, Gaydamak is a Canadian citizen, who built his wealth in America in the 80's, and most of the ex Russian people named are sued in Russia mainly, country that every knows is the world leading Democracy !!! Israel has a long way to go to get rid of crime,but its not NYC, & I advise that you document yourself in a proper way before accusing a country, and/or people, if you don't want yourself to be sued for diffamation! Telephone the emergency police number and you will wait and wait and wait for a reply. When the police officers eventually arrive they will tell you that catching the person who broke your window/stole your purse/robbed your house/ isn't "in the public interest". I am reluctant to send this letter to Haaretz where the country's enemies greedily gobble up everything that is to Israel's detriment, but where the public safety is in danger, small crimes are ignored and lead to disdain for more significant crime, too.

Sadly, a well respected newspaper like Haaretz has recently allowed a wanted criminal to advertise on it's web site. The Jerusalem Summit is sponsored by the Michael Cherney (AKA Mikhail Chernoy) Foundation. According to the NY Sun, Cherney is not allowed to enter the US due to his connections to the Russian Mafia. The Russian businessman immigrated to Israel in 1995 after allegations in his native country swirled that he was involved in assassinations and other criminal enterprises. In 1998, he was barred from entering Bulgaria for an alleged plot to assassinate the son of a Cabinet minister. He was also recently in the news regarding the release of secret recordings of Saddam Hussein and his advisers. Vital life and death decisions left to Peretz f.ex.,like with the Karni. Or the Citizenship Law,where suicidal Lefties with A.Barak are running amuck. In reality,taking into account everybody(almost) has guns at home,the violent crime is surprisingly low. With all the (important) war against terror, the goverment forgot to deal with crime. High time they do that - drugs, women slavery, etc.
There should be no tolerance of prostitution, gambling, money laundering or any other illegal/ immoral activities. Deportation should be the rule, they should not even be supported in a prison. Prepare the way for The Lord!
