Poll: 77 percent of Israelis find fault with Olmert's leadership

Dahaf Institute survey to mark one year of Olmert as PM, found that 62% believe he performs poorly under pressure.

By Gideon Alon

Some 77 percent of Israelis give Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's leadership a failing grade, according to the results of a Dahaf Institute poll released Wednesday, a year after Olmert took over from stricken premier Ariel Sharon.

The poll found that 60 percent of those polled believe that Olmert himself has given a poor performance as prime minister, and only 30 percent ranked his performance as good.

Regarding his decision-making abilities, 75 percent of respondents said that Olmert had poor decision-making skills, while just 24 percent said that he was competent in this area.

On his ability to perform well under pressure, 62 percent found him lacking, and 37 percent said that he had performed well.

The poll also found that 80 percent of respondents believe that there was inadequate assessment of the situation in the run-up to the Lebanon War last summer, while just 20 percent of those polled said the opposite.

Some 56 percent said that Israel was right to go to war, while 42 percent said that there was no justification.

When asked to explain the reasons why they saw Olmert's leadership as a failure, 50 of respondents cited the events of the past 12 months, 31 percent blamed the prime minister's personality and 15 put it down to the expansion of the government.

Some 45 percent said that Olmert would have fared better in their estimation had he fired Amir Peretz from the job of defense minister.

Just 20 percent, however, said that they would have liked Olmert more if he had dismissed Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Dan Halutz, although 73 percent said it would not have changed their opinion of Olmert.

The full results of the poll will be aired on Israel's Knesset channel (99) at 10:30 P.M. on Thursday.

Quote " Olmert has offered land for peace " His Sde Boker Speech was in compliance to US pressure , , ,Olmert is a docile US puppet , , Land for peace is what Syria want you to think , , the reality on the ground is land for terror , example Syria support terror pal faction Islamic Jihad , on Syria orders , they are firing rockets at Sderot , Sderot resident are running for cover from pals fired rockets , , Livni say its ok to negotiate under fire refering to pal terror , in contradiction to 1993 Oslo agreement with the commitement of terror PLO to renounce violence , to resolve their invalid claims thru peacefull negotiations , , terror PLO realising that they have to compromise turned to terror as a tool to extort concessions from Israel that Israel can't afford , , terror PLO Dictators don't compromise , they issue threats , they are evil to the end like Saddam , who didn't even ask for forgiveness , , Livni say its ok to negotiate under fire , that should make Syria really , really mad , Syria want also to negotiate while pressuring Israel for concessions thru Syria terror proxys or Syria threats of wars if no talks , Livni reject Syria assaults for talks , she says she is concerned about Syria peace nature in light of 2005 Gaza disengagement , refering to increased pal terror , kidnapping , rockets ect.... Same as Lebanon in post leb war 2 , Livni is in fact concerned about Syria stability regime if Syria attacks Israel , her concern undermine Israel security , the same as Sderot residents security is undermined for her support to Olmert restraint policy , , , Syria calls for talks are not a Livni priority , Livni is a US Condi docile puppet , Uncle Sam point a menacing finger at Livni , , , US refuse Israel to conduct talks with Syria , so US pressure Israel to stay away from Syria , Syria is involved in many Mideast instability , , Iraq , Lebanon , Pals , Syria Mideast instability policy is contrary to US Mideast Stability policy , US don't like Syria , Syria don't like US , Syria is no Israel friend , Syria implacable hostility to Israel was , is and will always be very much alive , ,

I'm shocked that only 77% have no confidence in Olmert. I pray everday that Olmert and his cabinet are removed from office. I'm saddened that Israelis en mass are not protesting in the streets as they did when Rabin was killed. Where are all the citizens of Israel? I'll give you a hint. They're watching TV and partying at the clubs and hanging out at the malls. They're getting their Botox injections and getting tattoos. The Israelis have become lazy and passive. They see no future with Olmert. They see no peace. Force Olmert to resign or suffer for many years to come.

Bibi is also responsible for the high percentage of poverty because he cancelled all the social help for the poor. Whatever he touches goes wrong so let him not touch the position of P.M.

European countries subjet to similar terrorists threats, even with left oriented gvmts., never acted that " , , , In 1991 during the 1st Gulf War , USA worked hard to assemble a coalition to take out Saddam from Kuwait ect... But USA feared that coalition may goes down if Israel reacts to Saddam missiles , of course therefore , USA pressured Israel Gov't to stay put during 36 days, to avoid a possible regional conflict with Syria and Jordan for example , , , , To my opinion , Israel's enemies saw Israel restraint as a deterioration of Israel deterrence power , , , Today again we see Olmert Gov't restraint policy in the face of Gaza pal cease fire violations They are still shooting rockets , , , IDF pinpoint actions to my opinion are a smoke screen to US interference , US pressure again , for US interest in Mideast Policy , , , If you remember a large scale IDF Gaza operation was suppose to happen before Olmert trip to US , it didn't happen after he came back from US , , , while he was in US , IDF conducted an operation only against Beit Hanun , , , Logic dictates that a sustained comprehensive operation is needed to eradicate Gaza terror , , It didn't happen and instead of a cure , only a temporary pill was allowed , , ,Beit Hanun , , ,after that we saw a cease fire pal violated , easement in Judea and Samaria movement , some road blocks are taken down , plus Xmas charity gift $100M to Abbas, weapons transfer from Egypt to Abbas and may be 4000 terrorits Al Badr brigade stationed in Jordan soon to be considered entry into Israel , , , plus a possible extortion prisonner exchange , tomorrow for this issue , Olmert is visiting Mubarak , useless however since kidnapping will happen again as terror Hezbollah did for terrorist Kuntar wasn't freed as terror nassarallah explained , , ,meaning pal terror will kidnapp again cause this or that heavy pal terrorist wasn't freed , , , All the above is a moral win to terror , makes IDF looks like impotent , an other deterioration of Israel deterrence power , , , US Mideast Policy interest , more likely to my opinion a US and EU pressure on Israel , for a US coalition with arabs States to stabilize Iraq and Lebanon and put some pressure , sanctions against Iran nukes , most likely in echange for a terror pal state and a disengagement from the Golan , All in line with 2002 Arab Summit , the Saudia Wahibism machination initiative , , , ,eventhough it could be seen as US trying to prevent Wars , trying to stabilize the Mideast , trying to do something , , All the moves above to my opinion are a US reward to radicalism , , , making Olmert Gov't a US docile puppet , on the back of Israel Nation , State , Land , , , Finally , , know that US and EU bear no responsibilty , or responsibility is limited , , if you see what i mean , , ,

I am 56 and have been closely attached to Israel since I was 17 and joined Nahal. Not being a sabra I see things through different eyes. In my opinion, Israel has been on the decline since the Yom Kippur War. I left Israel in '88 and this past summer returned intending to remain in Israel. After 6-weeks I had had enough of all the bureaucracy and the changed polulation. Israel has changed - needs strong leadership and Olmert just doesn't seem to be up to the job...

I can even add to your comment and make it stronger-Shas voted for Oslo. It's called out with the old and in with the new. The new generation has greater Jewish values. Who will be leader, that is a good question, but what we have now is bad. If elections were held now, the ideal temporary government would be Likud with over 30 seats joined by the Torah parties with over 30 seats and growing and Leiberman with maybe 12 or better. The Likud will have a lot of input from Feiglin (last internal elections he was third place and his base is growing) hopefully within the Torah parties there exist a new younger segment and Leiberman is very clear about defining the Jewish State. So the next government will have over 75 seats and will exist on a platform of Jewish Unity and a Jewish State Plan. It can only fall if Netanyahu attempts to uproot Jews from there homes.

under the circumstances. 37 percent found he had performed well? 20 percent found that assessment of the situation in the run-up to last summer's Lebanon war was adequate? Is it because there are no alternatives to Olmert that look like making a better job than he of governing the country or because our electorate has lost its marbles?

Olmert has been brave about offering land for peace. Not everyone has done so, especially since circumstances don't get easier with time. Someone has to make the decision to pursue peace, and Olmert has made a start. It won't help him or Israel if the public don't continue to support him on this issue.

Olmert ruined Jerusalem, you can still see the pathetic infrastructure around the city, and his stamp on the inept, corrupt municipal scene. He has less opportunity to be corrupt as PM, but the ineptitude shines brightly. I thought I would never ever say this, but bring on Bibi. Eventhough i sometimes question his choice of direction he is a real pilot, and can definitely handle the controls.
