Poll: 10% of Palestinian children have lasting malnutrition effects

Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics says numbers up over last two years due to widespread poverty

By The Associated Press

About 10 percent of Palestinian children suffer permanent effects from malnutrition, according to a survey published Wednesday, a result of widespread poverty in the West Bank and Gaza.

The root cause is poverty, according to Khaled Abu Khaled, who directed the study for the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. He said the numbers are up slightly over the past two years.

"One obvious effect of malnutrition is stunted growth among children, which has increased about three percent in the last two years," he said.

"This is a chronic chronic. Even with interventions, the rates don't go down fast," he said.

Other surveys have shown that about half of the Palestinians are living in poverty.

Six years of violence between Palestinians and Israelis have crippled economic growth in the West Bank and Gaza. A year of international aid sanctions following an election victory by the Islamic Hamas and its takeover of the Palestinian government has intensified the hardships.

The findings were based on a survey conducted in November and December covering 13,238 residents of the West Bank and Gaza, according to a statement. It found that 13.2 percent of the children of Gaza suffer stunted growth, compared to 7.9 percent in the West Bank.

While incidents of stunted growth were up slightly, Abu Khaled noted a decrease in cases of extremely low body weight - another common symptom of acute malnutrition. He said the children of northern Gaza were most likely to suffer stunted growth as well as low birth weight.

The survey showed that 17 percent of the Palestinian population is made up of children under the age of five, and 46 percent are under 15.

Their parents are closer to the kids than either you or I. UNWRA is just down the block. Want to stop the Merry go round, really easy, parents must stop buying bullets and guns, buy veggies and fruit. Take the kids by the hand, march them down to UNWRA and pick up food packages. Israeli Occupation came AFTER Arab attacks. The Wall, roadblocks and barriers were a result of constant attacks. You're so-called "Mafita Attacks" were targeted against perpetrators and planners of attacks on Israel. It's called "Tit for Tat".

You've a poor sense of reality. The blockade was created by the Homicide bombers who infiltrated with their loads of death & destruction. It's really simple, if you make an effort, to understand. You lock your house doors and remove keys from the car. Those precaustions help prevent personal injury and theft of the car. Israel has done the same thing. Locks it doors, keep the maniacs out.

hrming the children. To prevent illness or disease you have to go to the sources, parents & home, plus schools. Where they're taught from age 3 & up to prepare for their destination as Shahid's. Stop buying guns & ammo, buy food & cokes. It seems Pali's would rather see their kids well-armed instead of well-fed.

Dear Timothy, There is so much you don't understand. I do not know Israeli who would willingly watch a child starve to death, but this is not quite the case in Gaza. Why don't you extend your posting 57 to the authority who are responsible for them. Additionally, there is a very large and very functional humanitarian organisation called UNRWA who are mandated to carry out direct relief and works programmes for Palestine refugees and have been doing so since 1950. YOu may also be interested to know that UNRWA's highest hardhsip cases are in Lebanon where the Palestinians do indeed experience a rotten deal. Perhaps address the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the PA Authority or UNRWA all of whom are charged with the responsibility of responding to the needs of those in their care. I would not even want to peel away at the layers and see what happens to all the money. £1.8 billion was fiddled away by Arafat from his own people let us not forget.

If the PCBS statistics was to be further compared to Palestinian surveys carried out by UNRWA, the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics, World Bank Palestinian studies or by any other independent statisticians, you will find that any such comparative analyses will lead to the conclusion that the PCBS stats are faulty in the extreme. If you recall the demographic stats were laughable! Why don't all you commentators seek to study the source of the data before you make a judgement. Mind you writing nasty things about Israel is second nature. Destitution and starvation does exist, but not in Gaza.

"Let's feed the children, Let's feed the children" is a tired old mantra that has never worked. All it has done for the USA is make our children fat and all it will do in Israel is to allow the Palistinian Authority to spend more of their money on terrorism and propoganda and allow the violence to continue. I am so tired of "Do-Gooders" trying to solve the problem without addressing the original cause or going out of their way to not blame people who are obviously responsible for the situation in the first place. Learn from history!!! Making excuses will not solve the problem. It's time for the Palistinians to stand up and demand their goverment represent them and help them to build a peaceful and productive lives. They should stop blaming Israel for the poor choices the PA has made over the years and for the lack of real help from their so called brothers in Islam and pull themselves up by the bootstap like evryone else has had to do over their history.

Let's blame the ARAB adults FIRST. Then maybe they'll get down to brass tacks, forget about buying more guns and feed their kids. UNWRA has been feeding that crew for sixty years, making them too lazy & unwilling to take care of their own kids. We constantly see photos of groups of men and women parading through the streets, chanting slogans and brandishing firearms. If the Arab leaders would stop stealing the money they receive as largesse to take care of the people, the kids might have a lot more to eat. Need mone $$$, ask Queen Suha, her bum of a husband stole billions intended for the care and feeding.

Even now hundreds of millions of USD aid humanitarian money given to Arabs from EU, Japan and USA disappear without a trace. Even now Arabs prefer violence in the streets and blowing up 48 Internet Cafes in Gaza. Even now Arabs educate their children to become Shahidin against Jews and pressure young women to be suicide bombers. Even now Iran and Saudi Arabia promised Arabs financial aid that never arrives. Even now Arabs starve to death and kill hundreds of native Black children in Darfur every single day. Even now Arabs incite hatred against Jews in their media outlets day and night non-stop. Even now Arabs plan how the kill the most number of innocent Jews, Jewish children not spared. Even now Arabs launch almost daily rockets against towns in Israel. After all this how can anyone expect Jews to have more heart for Arab children than Arabs do?

By comparison the Arab children under Israel's "occupation/oppression/control/domination" are doing very well. One important factor contributing to this is the number of children they have, 47% are under the age of 15 which is mind boggling. In the best of times they could not feed so many children. The Arab who sold the Peace House in Hebron to Jews has 22 children and three wives, a family of 26!

You folks were left successful, profitable greenhouses that provided millions of dollars in employment and food- so what did your people do? You destroyed them in your jealous rage. They belonged to the Jews, and your people simply could not stand that. You took aid money and bought weapons. For years, your leaders have embezzled aid money and funds earmarked to feed your people, and build infrastructure. (Remember Arafat & Suha?) And, your leaders continue to steal from you today. You chose to buy bullets and bombs over bread. And now, you complain your children are hungry? Like any responsible adult, you own the results of your actions and decisions. Your people are more than poor in nutrition of the body. When you make decisions based upon your hatred of Jews and Israel, you consistently make decisions that leave your children hungry and your potential to thrive, ignored.

The price of an AK47 would feed the family for a few months. The guns & ammo are sold alongside food in the Souk, Mommy & Daddy must be taught that they can't sacrafice their kids food for nasty old guns. It's Mommy & Daddy's choice to make and consider the consequences.

I was born in Germany in 1942 and grew up within the self inflicted poverty of the post-WWII-era here. At the age of 4, we lived at 800 calories per day, close to the starvation level. This was the situation for 100% of the whole nation of 60 million people, not just 7% or 13%. At the age of 6, all children needed nutrition from the US help program to be able to perform at school. I still remember the bad smelling soup which was our only warm meal per day. Whenever I see pictures of Palestine youths, e.g. throwing stones or protesting at destroyed houses, I'm surprised about the good color of their skin, their overall nutritional status, the quality of their clothes and the devices they own, such as bicycles. For an ethnic group which is collectively promoting racial hatred and the expulsion of a neighbouring state's population, without the power to implement such goals, this seems to be an exceptional solid quality of live overall. Israeli's feel concerned over the children's welfare. Their parents should also feel concern. They must cease their hostile actions, stop buying guns and bullets instead of food. The souks have weapons for sale displayed alongside foods. When so much of the Palestinian funds are being diverted for weapons, and much of the remaining funds are being stolen by the leaders, this leads to hunger. There's no reason to allow Pali commerce to use Israeli roads and resources. Just the other day, an Arab from Kalkilya, tried to sneak a 100 KG explosive load into Israel, in an attempt to wreak a major disaster during Passover. Pali killing of innocents is a lot faster form of death than starvation. The starved can be fed, those that are killed are dead permanently. Feed the kids, stop buying guns.

If Hamas did not spend all their money and efforts to maintain an idiotic stance on the destruction of Israel if they concentrated less on their PR efforts to demonize Israel and the Jews and worried more about the well being of their people this would not be happening. It is very easy to blame the Jews for what is happening in the Palestinian territories, but much more difficult to accept Hamas's responsability for what is happening there.

Why on earth do you think they are such petite people anyway. The Palestinians have lived under oppression for at least the past 2000 years. They are smaller because of it and can sustain starvation far longer than other societies. The people in Gaza have survived on the lowest per capita consumption of water in the world. And of course, it is the oppressor's resonsibility. Perhaps if they had more commerce, more food, they would get fat and quit struggling for freedom, liberty, and right to properties both real and personal.

"Statistics" by PA propaganda bureau do not show malnutrition
    • Dr. L. Brnd
    • 11.04.07
    • 22:59

A completely phony claim of malnutrition by a bunch of statisticians more interested in propaganda than child health. He claims increased "chronic chronic" (twice as bad?) malnutrition but a decrease in "acute" malnutrition occurring over the last 2 years. It doesn't even make any goddam sense. No doubt, this is the fault of the "boycott" of the Hamas regime. If you want to see real malnutrition, you don't need the PA Bureau of Statistics, you just need to look at pictures of the Darfur children being starved to death by their Arab government -- and then, for contrast, look at the many pictures of obviously well-fed, well-dressed Arab punks throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers. Malnutrition, my ass. Just crass Hamas propaganda. Since half the population is under 16, and half over, maybe these crappy Palestinian parents should share their food with their kids instead of eating it all -- since the PA Bureau of Statistics reports no adult malnutrition whatsoever. What a screwed up society!

with the BILLIONS they are demanding from the EU. Notwithstanding the fact that PRICKFOOL suggests, as do most others who *CLAIM* to have the poor Palestinians interests at heart, that they purchase more sophisticated weapons rather than free their people from the camps their OWN people have kept them in as pawns. Or is that PORNs

The international aid money is avalible all hamas has to do is accept 3 international conditions Recognise Israel End terror Accept previous agreements made by the PA Hamas refuse so the west refuses to give any money and the money that hamas does have access to they spend on weapons not food. No more terror means no more suffering and economic growth and economic growth leads to better health for the children.

Malnutrition, suicide bombing, refugee camps for years and years because Palestinian leadership tells their people to have patience and sacrifice. Are they any closer to their goals? NO! So, what's the point? Because the Arab leadership is too embarrassed to admit they have failed. Better to have the people suffer than admit no progress.

Although it may be impossible to reach her directly at least you can go to her husbands grave and pray for his soul... and include in your prayer the Swiss, French and Caribbean off shore bank account numbers. You'll be amazed at how much food can be bought with a couple of billion. Oh.., and just in case the Delusionists ( otherwise known as the US Congress ) just appropriated $59M for Abbas. Might ask him for some lunch / snack money.

When Palestinians voted in a free and democratic election, I'm sure they thought the "democratic world" would respond by imposing an economic siege ? Yeah, I know, democracy is not always pretty. In fact, it's right down disgusting sometimes. So the democratic world( with a few exceptions Norway and others) towed the Zionist agenda and Israeli military and economic war against the Palestinians continues unabated- children and future generations didn't escape Zionist wrath- but that's ok, we are teaching them democracy. Kids are starving because mommy and daddy voted?

The solution to the problem is very easy

    • 11.04.07

An Israeli family with 2 children with a monthly income of NIS 6500 is middle class. The same family with 8 children is poor. I imagine that the same holds for Palestinian families. (Their problem is that the average number oif children per woman is about that number) So the solution is very simple: birth control and family planning. True, it will take a few years, but once the Palestinians get their population explosion under control, poverty will decrease.

I doubt it. How many times have I, and other critics of Israel, left messages saying that the people of Palestine are in desperate need because of America and Israel's starvation blockade? How many times has this been pooh-poohed by the flint-hearted Zionists of Talkback? here we have proof. Starvation of innocents - used as a vile weapon of war by two supposedly civilised nations to break their will. The starvation blockade has been one of the most disgraceful acts of the Bush adnministration and of the American people. As for Israel, I expect nothing from this bunch of gangsters and thugs. It is a nation that wallows in the gutter.
