Police believe man, 33, killed his wife at Nahariya absorption center, hurled daughter, 9, from window, then jumped after her.
By Jack Khoury Tags: Israel immigrationA 33-year-old Ethiopian immigrant is suspected of having murdered his wife, 29, and 9-year-old daughter at a Nahariya absorption center late Thursday night.
The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m., the police reported. The commander of the Nahariya police station said that the family had no previous record of violence, and that the incident appeared to be a result of a family dispute that ended in tragedy.
He explained that the police officers broke down the door of the family's assigned room at the "Tapuz" absorption center, where they found the wife, severely beaten and lifeless. The daughter was found on the lawn outside the room's window, also dead.
The suspect was found next to his daughter, severely bruised. It is the police's assumption that the suspect had hurled the girl out the window, killing her, and then attempted suicide by jumping out after her.
A Magen David Adom paramedic said that the emergency medical team pronounced the wife's and daughter's deaths at the scene. The suspect, who was injured all over his body, was taken to a hospital in the city.
The director of the absorption department of the Jewish Agency in northern Israel, Dalia Tzarfati, said that the couple had immigrated to Israel two years ago, and were nearing the end of their absorption process. They were supposed to move into an apartment in Rishon Letzion, near the suspect's parents, in the near future. The suspect suffers from a disability in one of his legs and is unemployed, she added. Tzarfati said that the operators of the absorption center were not aware of any problems within the family.
Dozens of immigrant families from Ethiopia reside at the Tapuz center, and many gathered at the entrance of the building which was closed off. Social

It's becoming all too common..everywhere..I just wish these people,if they want to kill themselves, fine,do it but leave your kids alone..and the wife.
" The police officers broke down the familys assigned room" Is that all they have ? and the rest is communal -dining room-kitchens -bathrooms -laundry rooms ? Two years living in an assigned room -what size? How are they prepared for integration? ASSIGNED ROOMS DIDNT WORK IN THE PAST WITH OTHER IMMIGRANTS . Jack.
The parents have an "ulpan" to learn Hebrew. The children don't usually learn in the merkaz klita; they go to local schools, but most attend immigrant classes until they move to regular apartments and join the regular school system. But imagine that student being placed in a regular 6th or 7th grade, or high school, after only one or two years of catch-up schooling. How can they catch up on six or seven, much less more, years of school, in only two years in the merkaz klita? They can't. And this creates an education gap with their peers, and leads some people to think Ethiopian students are just less intelligent than those peers; which my personal experience teaching dozens of Ethiopian students tells me is absolutely false. Israel is on then verge of failing these people, and really can't afford to. It needs them badly.
Surely the Director of the Absorbtion Dept.of the Jewish Agency and the Absorption center Operators have social worker professional help and advice and training to avoid and pinpoint dangerous family situations . There is a pattern and certainly a PROFILE must be available to assist Operators in recognising problems prior to there culmination. Of course theres no case of previous violence -it surfaces here in Israel after the cocoon stage when they are about to venture out into israel society . Usually the women will find work and integrate more readily than the male . What education is being received by these families in the centers???????? Jack.
