Three men have been arrested for allegedly extorting beggars around Jerusalem's Western Wall, after being exposed by an undercover police officer.

The evidence gathered in the undercover operation appears to suggest that a network of four men attacked and threatened beggars operating around the holy site.

The Jerusalem Magistrates' Court extended the remand of the three suspects by three days on Monday. The police estimate the men took tens of thousands of shekels from the beggars.

In addition to gathering incriminating evidence against the men, the undercover agent was also tasked with preventing the beggars from operating near the Western Wall, as begging is also illegal in the area.
